A picture is worth a thousand words…

by Susan on January 23, 2013

I was scrolling through iPhoto, looking for a specific picture of Cini when I stumbled across this visual representation of why I moved my sheep flock from New York’s Hudson Valley to Central Virginia.

Every morning. We had to break up the ice every morning in the winter time with a mini sledge hammer so that the sheep could have water.  Mis.er.able.

The Hudson Valley is one of the most beautiful places in the world, rich with history and natural features. It’s just a little to cold for someone who grew up in Texas.

This makes me SO thankful for our heated water buckets, and electric outlets to plug them into in the barn.

Laura, even when we had them up there, the water heaters just couldn’t keep up cause it was so cold! They work like a charm in VA, though. ;)

A little too much snow there too, remember the solstice party right after the snow storm, driving was no fun that night, but we had a great time at the party.

You know, I think that was our most fun party ever. I many, many fond memories of that period but I HATE being cold. Doesn’t the cold effect you with your RA?

Hi
I just found your blog through the link on scarf organisation by the modest mom blog & I love your header. We also keep sheep & while we have never had to break ice to give them water, we have the opposite problem in that we are running short on water & having to put in pipelines & troughs! Your header reminds me of our many poddy lambs & makes me look forward to lambing time again!
Have a wonderful day
Blessings
Renata:)

I’ve been doing this all week here. And lugging buckets of hot water from the house. Ugh. Virginia sounds good. Texas sounds even better.

Your recent farm photos have piqued my interest. We had 25 below the last few days/nights (not wind chill). When I see your photos, it bewilders me to see simple long sleeves and grass in January. I realize not everyone plugs in the heat wrap on their sauna’s water lines; but, your myriad of conditions in Winter amazes me. I have an Uncle in Fort Worth who sent me pecans for Christmas from the tree in his yard. I was flabbergasted.

Greetings from the Hudson Valley where my dog and I took a 5:30 am (his choice) walk in such cold conditions that I’m still trying to get warm again. I love winter and I love the Hudson Valley, but right now I’d like more heat!
