I’ve watched this video a hundred times and it never fails to calm me. So lovely.

The Campaign to Save Roald Dahl’s Writing Hut. I have very mixed feelings about this news story. Roald Dahl books have been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember and I love them so. I even have an original Quentin Blake illustration from Danny, Champion of the World. Boy and Going Solo are two of my favorite books of all time. My feelings for Roald Dahl the man, on the other hand, not so warm. He was a terrible womanizer and an unapologetic anti-Semite. So I’m not sure how I feel about his families drive to save this hut, at the cost of around $750,000. What are your thoughts?

  1. In general I’m in favor of saving things….but, a place where someone who thought and said the things listed in Wikipedia? Not so much…. Such a shame, he was a brilliant writer…..

  2. I’m in love with the Joy of Pickling, by L. Ziedrich. I made three kinds of pickled lemons. I made pickled ginger. I can’t wait to try more.

I love the preserving time of year. So many beautiful things in jars.

  3. You do realize my husband is sending you the stink – eye right now.

I think that the two most painful events in my life were my husband’s infidelity and having insults yelled at me because I am Jewish. I wouldn’t contribute a cent to that family to save a hut. Weighing the bad against the bad (an inanimate wooden, rotting box vs psychological trauma? Hut=A BIG ZERO
    Dahl’s personality=A BIG ZERO
Outright disrespect for other people’s beliefs=A BIG ZERO

Keeping promises and respecting freedom of religion=PRICELESS

Judy, Joel feels the same way you do. I just think it’s possible to divorce the man from the work. Joel disagrees.

  5. I find it hard that Dahl’s family thinks the public should pay to save the writing hut. I should think that if they felt it was worth saving that they would spend some of the money earned from the writings done inside it to pay for it.

I do think you can divorce the man from the work, in fact I think it is necessary. If we discarded every book, painting, sculpture done by a person who was not a kind and respectful person, we’d have very little to read or look at. That is not to say he deserves a free pass. People should not forget that he said and did hurtful things. But he also did good things. I say honor the art, talent and work while at the same time recognizing that the man was a human being who had numerous failings.

  6. Ooh, I love pumpkin in almost anything! The pumpkin cinnamon rolls sound divine!

  7. I second Evie, they must have amassed a fortune in royalties, especially with the recent Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie. They have a lot of nerve putting their hands out to the public. I was not previously aware that he was anti-semitic. It doesn’t surprise me (Walt Disney anyone?) but it does disappoint me since I really loved his books growing up.

  8. Just wanted to leave a comment today instead of just secretly stalking you and wishing you’d come to Northern Ireland to stock yarns…. Is it not enough that you post fabulous pictures of yarns, now you must also flagrantly flaunt beautiful food too?? Adore you from afar!!
