Piper and her Mama Jekyll had been in the lambing pen for 7 days as of yesterday, so it was time to move out to the pastures.
Piper was instantly curious about the grass.
All the mamas-to-be were instantly curious about Piper. They came running to see her and she got spooked and started running in the opposite direction!
All the ewes got a good look (and smell) at her.
It was puzzling, to say the least.
Because she’s quite on the small side, we’ve been supplementing her with formula three times a day, and we’ll continue that in the pasture. Mama doesn’t mind, but she doesn’t want to get too close to Cini either.
Cini loves bottle babies because the formula tastes like vanilla. He waits till we’re done feeding and licks the lamb’s face.
All of it was new and exciting for Piper.
She’s still sticking close to Mama for now.
In other news, RJ Straw, the winner of our Young Shepherd Award and a herd of Angora goats arrives tomorrow morning to meet his new animals! I cannot wait for him to get here. We’ll be shearing RJ’s goats in the morning in one of the lambcams so y’all can watch- I’ll let you know as soon as I figure out which one and what time. We’ll also be shearing some of the yearlings tonight.

Piper is too cute for words
I cannot wait to meet that little cutie!
I’m in love, Piper is such a little doll! The comment about Cini made me laugh, LGD’s are such big sweeties.
Love love love!!
I love that Cini is licking his lips in the pic, just waiting for clean up
That Piper is such a cutey patootey!
You didn’t even have to say it, I knew all the other mamas to be would be over to check out the baby… And sweet Cini… talk about too cute for words!!
Thank you for such a great post on a rough Monday afternoon! The photo of all the other mamas-to-be is hilarious.
C’mon ladies, we are waiting for you, too!
So much cuteness! And Cini is just such a sweet Uncle Dog.
Is it usual for the grown up sheep to steer clear of the dogs?
All the other mamas are thinking WHERE ARE OUR BABIES!!!
Absolutely paralyzed by the cute…
Love it! Loved seeing all the mamas welcome in the new member of the flock. So cute!
So sweet!
she’s adorable!!! I love the contrast in size between Piper and Cini
I love how fresh and white Piper looks. How big her world has suddenly become!!
Huh, isn’t it amazing what dogs figure out (:
So, question: Do the grown-up “bottle babies” have a different realtionship with Cini (and vice-versa) than the strictly mama-fed?
Mama is still so big- are there more babies hiding in there, or is she just growing us lots of yarn?
Oh, too much cute!!! She’s precious, and I can’t wait to see her cousins!! C’mon ladies!! Let’s see some more lambs!! And Cini’s just too sweet for words. Funny how Jekyll stood back while Cini was so close. Before I read WHY he was so close, I thought he was just doing a really good job protecting Piper. But no…I see there’s an ulterior motive! Fabulous – thanks for making my day!
I love the picture of all the mamas checking out Piper. Just like human mamas checking out a new baby! Wonderful pictures.
That “lamb in the lap” is one of the cutest photos I’ve ever seen. Your farm, sheep, lambs – all of it has inspired me and my husband to take a “Shepherding class” at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival…I too, am paralyzed by the cute.
Wonderful pictures! I especially loved the flock coming to meet the first lamb of the season, and all of them sniffing her, and the last where she’s standing on her sturdy little legs close to mama.
But the ones of Caroline, she really should send those to her former profs. She looks so content (and cute) with animals all around her.
omigosh. I need a Piper.
omg
i <3 those pictures especially the last three
cini licking his lips near piper is a hoot (would love to see him lick the baby's face!) and
the last one of mama and baby is ABSOLUTELY PRECIOUS!
gives me the oooey gooey love bumps all over.
