Surprised by PUPPIES!!!

by Susan on December 16, 2010

Lucy gave us quite a shock today by delivering a litter of Maremma pups. I feel like a total idiot, because I was absolutely convinced that she positively was not bred. We even had an appointment to have her sonogramed, but I cancelled since she was exhibiting any of the behaviors or signs of being pregnant.

We’ll get some better pics when Lucy decides to let us get closer to her pups. There are at least two of them from what we can see.

If you think you were surprised, imagine how Lucy feels! Her momma never even told her……..

knittingfool aka lori December 16, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Oh, Lucy! What a Christmas surprise! Congrats to Cini, the stealth stud.

GrandmaTutu December 16, 2010 at 1:27 pm

Merry Christmas!! Nothing like puppies around the house on Christmas morning!! I couldn’t be happier for you. xoxo

Sue (Olliepup) December 16, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Wow what a surprise, Hope she lets someone close to her soon, to get her somewhere warmer and to get PICS.

Jenny December 16, 2010 at 1:31 pm

What a great surprise Christmas gift… puppies… wow

Nancy December 16, 2010 at 1:49 pm

WOW! Congratulations on your new litter — that’s amazing she didn’t exhibit any signs of pregnancy. My beagle had a litter 2 1/2 weeks ago and there was no question she was expecting – I’ve never seen her hungrier LOL! I confirmed her pregnancy with an ultrasound (mostly because her previous breeding didn’t take) and had an x-ray done a week or so before they were born. You’re lucky she free whelped them – my bitch wasn’t so lucky and needed to be delivered at my emergency vet’s office and I lost one puppy.

Aren’t puppies the best? I’m loving my beagle babies!

Rosie December 16, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Keep a close look-out – Lucy’s eye doesn’t look good in the photos – you know what I mean – her demeanor.

Louise December 16, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Holy wow. Our baby girl isn’t a baby any more!

If that doesn’t make you feel better, nothing will. Puppies!

Maureen J (mljan) December 16, 2010 at 2:48 pm

I hope everything goes well with her. She was such a darling puppy, such a short time ago. They grow up too fast. Sniff.

Krysta December 16, 2010 at 2:58 pm

WOW! Way to Go Lucy! Congrats on the puppies.

Mary Cooper December 16, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Leslie from California December 16, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Susan, how exciting and please congratulate Miss Lucy on her little family! I can not wait to see the babies, I will bet that Lucy will be a fantastic mom too!

Jane from Maryland December 16, 2010 at 4:15 pm

You know, teenagers sometimes just don’t let you in on everything they are doing, and must have been asleep during the safe sex lecture.

Fran December 16, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Well, I guess you got a couple extra presents you weren’t planning on. Hope all goes well with the babies. Must be tough since the breed is meant to be non-humanized. Can Sabine help? (Cini’s alreay helped enough…)

Teresa (knittingdancer) December 16, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Best wishes to the new mom and her babies. I think the names should be names of the Christmas such as Nick, Merry, Mary, and etc.

Margaret December 16, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Susan when I asked about, needing a pair of LGD maremmas puppies for the alpacas I didn’t think you have ones on the way….lol…males or females

Shannon December 16, 2010 at 5:44 pm

What a wonderful, fluffy surprise! I think at least one of them will need a Christmas themed name :)

kathy December 16, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Liz H. December 16, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Merry Christmas Susie!
The very best surprises come in tiny packages!

Benne (feathersong) December 16, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Oh, look at those sweeties! Lucy looks to be a careful, if wary new mother. Hope you are feeling better.

Becky in South Bend December 16, 2010 at 7:40 pm

Oh my goodness! Congratulations!!!!

mixette December 16, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Well, *hello* puppies! I saw this like on another website about naming people-babies born around christmas that might be fun to look at:

http://nameberry.com/blog/christmas-names-beyond-nicholas-and-noel-2

I love that Juniper is one of the names (under category: greenery.)

Becky in South Bend December 16, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Details, please! How did you discover her? Where were they born? How did she do? Did you help? How’s she doing now?

Frances December 16, 2010 at 7:50 pm

You should name one Natalie or Natalia after the Italian word for Christmas, since the other dogs have Italian-sounding names. Assuming there are girls.

quinn December 16, 2010 at 7:51 pm

Good gracious! What a shock that must have been. I hope everyone is doing well and the puppies will thrive!
Funny…just this morning driving to work I was thinking of emailing you with a question about finding Maremmas for LGDs for my goats…

MissMoosey December 16, 2010 at 8:43 pm

Our little puppy Lucy is all grown up! Adorable!

Paula Ladd December 16, 2010 at 9:02 pm

Judy aka lamazeteacher December 16, 2010 at 11:28 pm

Wow! Can’t think of a more wonderful surprise than new puppies. Roses to Lucy for a job well done and condoms for Cini!

Megan December 17, 2010 at 2:27 am

She’s just another single teenage mother! Lucy- you’re a statistic!

Julie December 17, 2010 at 7:39 am

Sweet little puppy noses!

Sara December 17, 2010 at 9:32 am

Puppy breath! Hope you can get some cuddles. (And being the cynical one, how much can you sell these babies for?) I like the Italian Christmas names too.

turtle December 17, 2010 at 11:26 am

sweet! Oh my , i would so love one! lol

Rachael December 17, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Holy cow! What a neat Christmas surprise. Can’t wait to see pictures of the puppies!

Tracy Wells December 17, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Wow, what a lovely surprise! And isn’t it amazing that dogs seem to know what to do, even though no one ever told them. Nature is amazing.

karen kcaknitts December 18, 2010 at 11:07 am

Congratulations to Lucy and everyone on the farm.

VelvetMarmoset December 18, 2010 at 11:09 am

Laura December 30, 2010 at 5:09 pm

I was just cuddling with this dog a week earlier– she really didn’t seem/act/look pregnant at all! Wow. what a surprise.
