Surprised by Tequila

by Susan on July 14, 2010

So, today’s post was supposed to be all about  making Strawberry Jam. But when I went to get the strawberries out of the fridge this morning they were just a little…sad looking. I knew I was taking a chance by waiting another day on them, but yesterday got away from me and I just didn’t get to it.

But the thing is, I HATE wasting food. Hate it like poison! I really didn’t want to waste two whole pounds of strawberries, so I decided to take one for team and make Strawberry Tequila instead. YOU’RE WELCOME!

Want to play along at home? You’ll need a bottle of tequila (750 ml) and 2 pounds of strawberries. I don’t think you need super-fancy tequila like this, but this bottle was a house-warming gift and all I had in the house.

Gently rinse the strawberries to remove any sand or grit.

Cut the tops off the berries, cut them in half and divide them equally between two quart-sized canning jars.

Pour the tequila over the berries to cover the strawberries.

Put lids on the jars and store in a cool, dark place. Shake the jars everyday for three weeks to agitate the berries. After three weeks, strain the tequila into a clean bottle and discard the berries. Use the tequila in margaritas or cocktails, or drink it straight. (I’ll let you know how it is as soon as it’s finished.)

Take the leftover tops outside.

Summon your chickens.

Throw the strawberry tops to the chickens and take your place as a god to poultry.

Balsamic Strawberry Jam is still to come…

i love “summon your chickens”! i cannot stop laughing.

Susan July 14, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Heehee. I will have to video tape them tomorrow so you can see how fast they waddle when they are summoned.

I am not sure it is safe to make this if you are home alone. WoW! wish the berries had gone bad while we were visiting you! Heehee

The chickens absolutely run at the sound of our sliding door opening!! They know a snack of some sort is coming…and besides strawberries they absolutely love the rind of a watermelon, cheerios, any sort of pasta, and cheese…oh, how they love the cheese!!

Erin L July 14, 2010 at 4:58 pm

That is completely awesome. I would imagine you could do this with vodka, too, right?

Susan July 14, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Yes! I did something similar with cherries a couple of years ago when I picked way more than I could use. (The only difference is with cherries, you have to take a toothpick and prick the cherries all over before covering them with vodka.)

“god to poultry” is what got me cracking up….and OMG do I want some of that tequila. MMMM tequila is one drink I loooove. Ask me about my one very memorable night bar hopping in NYC and just having tequila shots where-ever we went. We were on a hunt to find the most expensive exotic tequila we could find. Can’t remember what-all we found (see tequila shots above) but it was $$$. Anyway we never had flavored tequila (at least I don’t think we did). Am dying to hear how this batch turns out. I may have to break down and actually try making one of your recipes. You know I don’t cook, right? So if I do it’s big news among my crew.

Susan, you are too funny. Loved you post today, but especially liked the part where you become a God to Poulty! This is not only funny, but I will wager, pretty true. I know I peel carrots for dinner (nearly daily) my dogs get the skins and the ends… They must think of my as minor diety, but it still feels pretty good… thanks again for the great post…

So I went outside and summoned my chickens! But nothing happened, except that the dog next door looked at me funny. This is probably because, sadly, I have no chickens.

jenn July 14, 2010 at 7:42 pm

i had no idea it was so simple! i’d wanna eat the berries, too.

you guys are cracking me up about the chickens.

Julie July 14, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Ok! I’m so trying this one.

New item on list of things to do: Become poultry god

Love this! Will try this!
Except I have no chicken to summons. And, don’t the chickens get a little tipsy?
ps maybe they will want hats (did you see the ones my neighbor made. on my blog?)

branchhomestead July 14, 2010 at 11:28 pm

i feel the same way about wasting food! love the way that you saved the strawberries~can’t wait to hear how this turns out.

Came here via Food in Jars, and I’m LOVING the tutorial you did on jam. I made blueberry jam the other day and it is so sweet, I never would have thought about decreasing the sugar and not using pectin. I made strawberry vanilla bean jam today and it is divine, and I plan on doing a peach jam, and blackberry before the end of next week. Needless to say, I love your blog and your love of jam.

~~” discard the berries”~~ NO!!! Spoon some over vanilla ice cream!! That’s what I do with my fruits after making liqueurs. Yumm!! Mash the rest with some raw sugar and make an ‘adults only’ strawberry sauce for icecream, pound cake, etc.

A new answer to “Why did the chickens cross the road?” I’m not much for Tequila, but love strawberries and even better… funny chicken tales. Bless their little birdie hearts!

Karen July 15, 2010 at 7:44 am

I’m with Hilary. Don’t discard the berries. Put them in a blender with some ice maybe. You’ve got to be able to do something with them.

carlene July 15, 2010 at 8:59 am

That looks so good! I would be summoning my chickens after a couple of those, and I don’t have chickens.

EightPondFarm July 15, 2010 at 9:35 am

Frustratingly, your “sad” strawberries look better than the only ones our grocery store has available. And my chickens ate mine right out of my garden (I think they had help). Gonna head into the big city today and maybe get some decent ones along the way. Looks great!

lauria July 15, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Hahaha! This post cracked me up! Were you pouring a little tequila for yourself while making this?

turtle July 15, 2010 at 12:58 pm

mmmm, going to make some this afternoon! We have been gone 3 days so the garedn has berries just waiting, and in this house there is always at least one bottle of tequila!

Jennifer King July 15, 2010 at 1:48 pm

That looks teriffic! I think it’s so strange that your chickens like strawberries…..mine HATE them!! They love all sorts of fresh fruit and veggie scraps but never touch the strawberries. Ha!

Allie July 15, 2010 at 2:31 pm

OMG, I don’t like tequila but this looks fab-u-lous. Can’t wait to see the finished product! :D

Tanya July 15, 2010 at 10:43 pm

Thanks for taking one for the team – lol! I have plans to make this whenever I’m not on the road. I can only begin to imagine how tasty it will be :)

woolies July 17, 2010 at 11:47 am

LOVE the chickens running. too Cute!!

Alltek Bee Removal July 22, 2010 at 8:28 am

I love that the Chickens will eat just about anything. Did you notice any of them stumbling around after having a few strawberries?
