Update on Susan

by Susan on June 11, 2010

Hi everyone, this is Maggie. Susan asked me to post and let you know why she hasn’t been providing all the promised updates.

In short, her eye is a wreck. She went to the ER in Columbus this morning, who sent her to specialists, who told her it wasn’t a scratched cornea at all (though they don’t know what the problem actually is), gave her very helpful steroids and painkillers, and have organized an appointment for her back in town on Monday. She said it was the worst pain she’s EVER EVER been in, but she seems to be doing better now, thanks to the wonders of modern medications.

She hopes to be able to attend some portion of the conference tomorrow, but obviously treating her eye is her first and foremost priority. I’m not sure she’ll be up to photography even if she does get to attend!

I’ll keep y’all posted as I know things. I’m sure she’ll be able to check the comments here if nowhere else, so feel free to send well-wishes (or diagnoses!) via comments here on the blog.

The specialists in Columbus don’t know what it is? I don’t like the sound of that. I hope she quickly finds a doctor who does know what it is and that she starts to feel better asap.

Amy Karasz June 11, 2010 at 4:41 pm

OMG!!!! Feel better dear!!!! And thanks for the update, Maggie!

Carol Gibbs June 11, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Thank you Maggie, for being there for her and letting us all know.

Get well soon, Susan! Take care of yourself!

Oh no…

Bill Horvath June 11, 2010 at 5:03 pm

I know a number of top-notch ophthalmologists, retinal specialists, etc. here in Toledo. If she’d like to come up or get a second opinion remotely, please let me know (I can give her a lift; Columbus is only about 2.5 hours from here.)

Dina June 11, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Ohhhhhh, a scratched cornea is bad enough but whatever this is and not knowing!! I feel so bad for you, Susie. Do they suppose flying made the condition worse? Hope the pain subsides quickly and youre able to attend TNNA. (((hugs)))

Connie June 11, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Maggie,
There is an eye doctor I would highly recommend in Cville.Let me know if you want info.

Joan B June 11, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Thanks for the update Maggie. Poor Susan. Hopefully the steroids and painkillers will keep helping until she gets to the specialist on Monday.

KnitNoir June 11, 2010 at 5:24 pm

How horrible! Is it getting worse instead of better?

Erin L June 11, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Ack! Get well soon, Susan! I hope this doesn’t get in the way of your Super Secret.

Nancy P June 11, 2010 at 6:13 pm

I hope the docs can figure out what it is right away and get you on the road to a quick recovery. Sending healing thoughts and hugs your way.

Maureen J (mljan) June 11, 2010 at 6:24 pm

The saying is that bad events come in a group of three. In your case it seems to be multiples of three, so enough, already.
Sympathy, and wishing you can enjoy some of the rest of TNNA.

Rebecca June 11, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Susan I am so sorry to hear that you’re in pain. It sounds awful. Thinking of you. Rebecca

Judy(lamazeteacher) June 11, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Damn! You deserve so much better than all this tsouras (trouble)! Hopefully the steroids will kick in quickly and the painkillers will do their job, so that you can accomplish what you wanted to at TNNA.
If the specialist on Monday doesn’t give you a reasonable diagnosis, I think a second opinion would be in order. No reading…but music is very soothing.

Jess June 11, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Susan-
Hope this is quickly resolved. Sending healing and positive thoughts your way!

Jellenp June 11, 2010 at 8:14 pm

So so sorry Susie. I hate that this is happening. I know eye people in DC, but not Ohio. I’m hoping you are as comfortable is possible.

Rebecca June 11, 2010 at 8:23 pm

So sorry to hear this news, Susie. Hope you get it figured out soon and stay comfy in the meantime,

turtle June 11, 2010 at 11:25 pm

Jeeze! Thank you for the update, Maggie. Susan, we’re all putting out good thoughts your way especially in the eye area. And towards your medical carers. Please don’t stress. All we can do is our best.

Jan June 12, 2010 at 6:40 am

I vote for what Adelaide said…best Doctor you can find and a second opinion!!! Steroids are scary stuff.
Good luck good shepherd!

Jane from Maryland June 12, 2010 at 7:23 am

Sending positive vibes and healing. Pain is greatly overrated as a teacher – may it end really soon! Positive vibes and healing.

Lisa June 12, 2010 at 7:32 am

Dear Susan, I recommend Mass Eye and Ear in Boston. It’s a excellent teaching hospital and I know from experience that they are also the most compassionate people… Take whatever pain meds they offer. Serious eye pain is the worst pain in the world.

Linda June 12, 2010 at 7:48 am

Feel better soon Susie. You are in my thoughts, sending lots of healing vibes.

Maggie, thank you for the update; please keep us posted.

Sara June 12, 2010 at 8:36 am

OMG… this is awful! And the not knowing just what it is…

Susie love… sending a ton of healing thoughts your way… love you!!!

Ruth June 12, 2010 at 9:43 am

The sounds just like what happened to my husband in May. ER said scratched cornea and when we went to the eye doctor three days later he said it was a staph infection. They put him on strong antibiotics and a strong pain killer and he was back to normal in about 5 days. May be time to ask if antibiotics are a good idea. Our thoughts are with her.

sue (Olliepup) June 12, 2010 at 10:48 am

So sorry to hear about this. Hope the painkillers are working. Rest and get to the specialist on Monday. (Must be hard to wait that long if you are in pain) Thanks for the update Maggie and hugs to both of you. Keeping you in my thoughts.

Erin June 12, 2010 at 11:09 am

I’m glad the meds are helping with the pain Susie – please take care of yourself!

Sandra June 12, 2010 at 11:44 am

Oh heavens! I’m so sorry to hear that the eye is worse and horrid. Please take care of yourself, Susan. And please take care of your farm, Maggie! It will be important for her to have the beautiful beasties to look at once she’s biocular again!

maltese parakeet June 12, 2010 at 11:59 am

susie, feel better soon!

Amy Karasz June 12, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I’ve been thinking about it and what Ruth said makes sense – could be staph – you are a farmer after all! Another thought I had is poison ivy. Either way, hope it clears soon. Let me know if you and/or Maggie need any help.

Haley June 12, 2010 at 12:44 pm

Poor poor Susan. I know how hard it is to have problems and doctors keep saying it’s not this, but I don’t really know what it is. Feel better soon! Maybe there will be baby chicks to greet you when you get home.

dr. rona thau June 12, 2010 at 1:06 pm

susan
sending you much love and all good things for your eye to heal and recover.
i will investigate and see if i can come up with anything in terms of a Dx but right now I am boggled.
the good news may be that you got to another dr …
my gut suspicion is that there is some sort of
virus or bacterial or other immune challenge that ‘s got your eye
all
*’ed up.

will do a bit more research for you also
in the meantime
the love continues to stream to you freely

xoxoxo

Diane Tetreault June 12, 2010 at 1:40 pm

I second the suggestion to visit Mass. Eye and Ear in Boston….. pain is no fun.
Did they check for shingles? My husband had it in his eye, and the pain you describe sounds familiar.
Best,
Diane

Evie June 12, 2010 at 1:41 pm

I hope you get a definitive diagnosis soon and speedy recovery!

Kathy June 12, 2010 at 2:00 pm

OMG – I am so sorry. Please, please drop everything else and focus on getting better. I’ll say some prayers for you.

Jan O June 12, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Susan,
If you need a ride somewhere or anything at all, please let me know, I am 20 minutes away just north of downtown Columbus. I think you have email addresses connected to the comments, if you don’t let me know here.

Teresa aka Knittingdancer June 12, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Susan, Take care of your eyes. I hope this medicine works for you. Thanks, Maggie for the updates.

michelle June 12, 2010 at 5:31 pm

I hope everything turns out okay. Feel better and have a quick recovery, Susan. Thank you Maggie for keeping us update.

LisaB June 12, 2010 at 6:23 pm

I’m totally sending out a diagnosis of corneal erosion…. which is something my mom suffered with for years and years before she was diagnosed… and she’s said it’s akin to having knives stuck in your eyes (even when your eyes are closed).

So feel free to throw that question at the specialist – for some reason it didn’t occur to my mom’s specialist at all (an ophthalmologist suggested that might be the problem)!

Hope it gets better fast, whatever it is!

Megan June 12, 2010 at 8:02 pm

Hang in there, Susan! I bet you look totally hot with the eyepatch — just like the photographer/pirate/model you had at the farm a few months ago.

beecee June 12, 2010 at 11:44 pm

o lordy – i am sorry to hear this. i hope the painkillers are working well and that you can get to the right doctor soon.

Champagne Maker June 12, 2010 at 11:56 pm

woolies June 13, 2010 at 9:57 am
