All of eggs have hatched, and with a couple of losses, we ended up with 8 healthy new chicks. Three of the little fluff balls are brownish-red and I have high hopes that they are Araucanas, also known as Easter Egg chickens.
Today, Ethel taught her babies how to eat, which was stupidly adorable. Also, when Ethel sits, all the chicks snuggle underneath her and you wouldn’t even know they were there if you didn’t know they were there.

I never liked the term “chicks” as applied to humans, but it’s perfect applied to these cute little fluffy things. There’s a poignancy to new life that gets me every time. Awwwww.

Regarding your title: there are going to be some very disappointed pedophiles when they click on this site! The pictures you took are great. Isn’t it amazing how these very young chicks already are eating grain. There must a cacophony of tweets coming from the coop!

I could watch baby chicks for hours and hours. And taking their pictures is a lesson in frustration – they are always moving, and never stop long enough to compose a good shot. You just have to keep snapping and hoping. Maggie did a great job.
The best part is that Ethel will do the heavy lifting for you as these little guys grow. Brooding chicks is laborious!

I’m going to check if it’s legal to have chickens in my new neighborhood. I know you’ve got the Ritz Carlton of chicken coops, but surely you don’t need ALL of those chickens?
they are wonderful! We’ve had baby chicks, but never with a mother hen. I can only imagine the fun of watching her with them. I don’t think I’d get anything else done.

One of my earliest, fondest memories was watching chicks hatch in my kindergarten class years and years (and years) ago. They were as cute and fluffy as these little guys.
The best is when all you see are little beaks sticking out from under mama’s wings.
