Another fantastic giveaway!

by Susan on March 25, 2010

Regular readers may remember that last summer, I received a copy of the book The Girl Who Played with Fire from the publisher to give away on my blog. Although I was appropriately honored to be chosen for the giveaway, I was also kind of puzzled. The book is the sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and both books are fantastic and fantastically violent.

The violence isn’t in the least bit gratuitous- it’s all integral to the plot and I enjoyed both of them immensely. I have actually listened to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo audio book several times on long car trips. Both books are well-written thrillers, which is very nearly an oxymoron in my opinion.

Long story short, this week I received another package from the publishing house containing a bound galley of the third and final book in the series, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest. The highly anticipated publication date of the third book isn’t until May 27, but I received one of only 30 available early copies to giveaway to one of my lucky, lucky readers.

I was sorely tempted to just read the galley myself, cause I cannot wait for it to be released, but I’m resisting the impulse. I’m still entirely baffled by this entire series of events, but I am not one to look gift horses (or sheep)  in their mouths.

I am going to repeat the caveat I put in my previous post: I haven’t read this book but the first two books repeatedly reference a rape that is graphically depicted. It’s integral to the plot of the books but it’s tough to read. There is also a whole lot swearing in the book, and I don’t mean ass and damn. I mean hard-core swearing that could make a Navy veteran blush.

If you would like to win this advanced copy of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest leave a comment on this post telling me the last book you read that you would highly recommend.  Entries close at midnight EST, Sunday, March 28. One entry per person, please. Multiple entries will be disqualified and the cheater’s mama will be telephoned. Seriously, y’all, play fair.

Winner will be chosen at random. The winner’s name will be posted Monday, March 29. The winner will have 48 hours to claim his/her prize or a second winner will be drawn.

And be sure to check out the website for the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie, designed by my BFF Julie. Julie also designed a wicked-cool scavenger hunt based on the movie. Follow the clues to win movie tickets, posters and maybe even a Barnes & Noble Nook!

Hmm… last book I read that I’d recommend? Probably Finger-Lickin Fifteen by Janet Evanovich. The whole Stephanie Plum series is fab… but this one is particularly so. It also rocks as an audio book.

I recently enjoyed “Border Songs” by Jim Lynch, not realizing that it was by the same author who wrote “The Highest Tide,” which I loved. Quirky, grounded in the natural world, and well-written.

Last best book I read is – Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann. I gave it to my best friend who took it on vacation and her husband swiped it. They ended up taking turns reading it. I am listening to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo now!

I keep meaning to read these books!

The last book I read and would recommend was “The Gathering Storm” by Robert Jordan (recently deceased) and Brandon Sanderson (finishing the series). Of course you need to read the first eleven books in the Wheel of Time series before it makes sense to read this one! Overall a truly amazing fantasy series if you’re into that sort of thing.

I absolutely adored and highly recommend The Shadow of the Wind.

The last book I read and would highly recommend is “The Girl Who Played with Fire”. I know it seems like I’m sucking up to put that on here, but I really do love the series and can’t believe the 3rd one is on the way – woo hoo!

Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew Crawford. An excellent memoir/treatise on why he prefers motorcycle repair even though he has a PhD in philosophy. And I’m listening to My Life in France by Julia Child and Alex Prudhomme. Makes me wish for time travel back to Paris in 1950!

I think I may have been the last person on the planet to read Girl With a Pearl Earring (verrry different kind of “Girl With…” book), but I finally picked it up last week and could not put it down — terrific!

The ending was so good. I hate it when a great book has a bad ending and this book had potential to go wrong, but it SO did not. Loved it!

I, sadly, haven’t had much time for reading lately, and now that I think about it the last book I read worth recommending was probably The Girl Who Played with Fire.

Personally, I’m far behind on my “fun” reading time, so my last book that I recommend to all good fiber people is: The Book of Wool. As Susie has so highly recommended as well. You can pick it up over and over again and it’s nice to read parts on short time.

I know these are not new…about 15 years old now, but Mary Doria Russell is just about my favoritest author. Remember Farhenheit 451–I know, I know, different book, different author and all that, but there really is a point here….So everybody in F451 had to memorize a book (oversimplification of plot, but hey, it’s supposed to be a short post) well, the following two books are definitely in my F451 list of books that I would become, should the need arise: “The Sparrow” and “Children of God”. So, Suzie, if you don’t read the give away book, check out these. They are available on Audible.com incase you misplace your reading specs!

I can’t wait for the third book. I just bought thee first book about 6 weeks ago on an impulse and fell in love with it.
A book I would recommend, that I just finished re-reading, is the classic “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas. It is quite a lengthy read, expecially since it’s like one big plot with numerous other smaller plots surrounding it. It certainly is a page turner filled with action, deceit, vengeance, romance, and secrets.

“The Girl Who Played with Fire”.

I am absolutely crazy about Lisbeth and Mikael Blomkvist. I highly recommend all 3 books (even though I have not read ..Hornet’s Nest. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into that book).

In addition, I think it is rather tragic that Stieg had passed away at an early age. I would’ve loved to been able to read beyond the “Trilogies” . thanks.

If you have a chance, definitely read “Three Cups of Tea” about Greg Mortenson and the work he is doing to build schools in Afghanistan. It will open your eyes!

If you like fantasy — I’ve fallen in love with “Warbreaker” by Brandon Sanderson. I don’t read much fantasy, but I pretty much read this one in one sitting. It’s got strong female characters, a little bit of mystery and a fantastic story!

Thanks for the giveaway : )

First: If I win, I insist that Susie read the book before she sends it. Otherwise I would feel guilty. I am a real sucker for detective stories and similar thrillers [spies and such but not Stephen King et al] so I am currently enjoying the latest in Linda Fairstein’s Alexandra Cooper series about the Manhattan DA’s office–nothing like any aspect of my law practice! I especially like the stuff surrounding the crimes rather than what happened and who dunnit. In Lethal Legacy, Fairstein explores the NY Public Library and the rarefied world of map collecting. Her newest, Hell Gate, is all about human trafficking and philandering politicians and other similar ne-er-do-wells. Fun stuff. And the other reading that is taking more of my time and attention is Shirley Paden’s Knitwear Design Workshop–a fabulous book that will enhance my JMFF projects. I recommend it to anyone who wants to design patterns or revise commercial ones. Shirley really helps you understand how a pattern should be put together so the finished product fits well.

The Omnivore’ Delimma by Michael Pollan. This book takes you through four food cycles (ie: processed, organic, etc) and is written from a very unbiased prespective. This is a great read for those of us that love our animals, yet eat meat!

Roy Heintzelman March 28, 2010 at 3:48 pm

I just read “The Rule of Four”, and thought it was incredible. Highly recommended.

JenL March 28, 2010 at 4:56 pm

I’d have to recommend “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. It’s a wonderful story about the poor african american woman who’s cancer cells, taken without her knowledge, have been used to cure numerous diseases and make other scientific breakthroughs.

I have to read the second book still! My boyfriend has the 2nd and 3rd in German, but I cannot read them :(

eric March 28, 2010 at 5:17 pm

The last book I really enjoyed was Interview with the vampire by Anne rice, i then read 4 of its sequels(there are many books in the series) while I liked them, interview is the best. Gothic tragic tale.beautifully written

Barclay March 28, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I just finished “Faceless Killers,” by Henning Mankell, the first of his highly-recommended Karl Wallander series set in Sweden. It was good exercise bike reading, which means it kept me from thinking about the bike while I was riding it, and that is good.

If you pick me, I would be happy for you to read the galley first before you send it my way.

I never win these things, but I am ever hopeful. :)

Heather March 28, 2010 at 7:06 pm

Oh – I can hardly wait for the new book to come out!

I recently read The Good Fairies of New York – quirky & weird, but a lot of fun

Tammie Johnson April 6, 2010 at 10:25 pm

I just finished Madapple by Christina Meldrum I Highly recommend it, I also think it would be a great as a movie. read and listen to audio on both previous books of Stieg Larsson’s

Candace Martin May 1, 2010 at 2:27 pm

So as cheesy as it sounds I am reading The Girl who Played with Fire now and just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so I highly recommend both of these and I have recently seen the movie and highly recommend that too!
