The Aftermath

by Susan on February 7, 2010

As you may have read, Central Virginia got 30+ inches of snow this weekend. That was on top of the 12 inches we already had on the ground. Everyone at the farm is fine but we’re going on day three without power. I was lucky enough to be in DC for the weekend, although the snow was out of control there too. In fact, I couldn’t get over how shut down the city was even today.

I’m sleeping over at Kris and Charlie’s house in Arlington, VA tonight so I can get up bright and early to head back to the farm.  There’s a pretty good chance we could be without power for another three or four days. So no internet, no phone, and no water. We do have heat, thanks to the woodstove and the delivery of wood we got last week.

I think I might have a case of the Day-Three-of-the-Storm Blues. Not at all looking forward to going home to no heat but very much looking forward to getting home to my flock and my dogs. I’ll blog when I can, but I might have to drive in to C-ville to find electricity and WiFi.

Hope you are all some where warm snuggled up to someone you love.

Stay safe and warm.

By the time you get power to read this, I hope you will have stayed warm. Did you madly throw together meals from the defrosting freezer? Are you suffering withdrawal from the electronic world?

This has been one crazy winter. Did you see the footage on the snow ball fight at Dupont Circle? We had no power all morning yesterday. Once it came back we at a very late breakfast and I fell asleep in front of the fire watching the footage. Safe travel tomorrow! The one thing we wish we had had those three hours was a battery operated radio! Even in town we felt cut off.

Looks like the C-ville area is more affected by the outages now than the DC metro area based on Dominion’s map – http://outagemap.dom.com/DomComFlexOutageViewer/index.html

Still, that map looks a lot better than it did yesterday! Hopefully power will return before the next storm this week!

It’s snowing here AGAIN as I type this and I, too, have the winter blues. Wish we could at least have some sun. These gray days are wearing.

I had a small taste of farm disaster when the small holding I was house sitting froze over last winter and we were left with a blown boiler and no water for either us or the animals. I hope you have enough for you guys and the sheep/dogs/goats and are keeping warm and safe.

Snuggle up with your woollies and stay warm!

Drive safe and home to the critters today. Another storm is supposed to be heading to the east coast tomorrow and Wed. It’s supposed to start around here tonight, but Minnesota has been getting it since last night. I’m a little excited, Wisconsin hasn’t seen much snow since Dec, it’s been missing us and dumping on the mid-Atlantic. That’s what happens in an El Nino year.

Not cold enough for snow here – but we’re nearly underwater from all the rain. Looking forward to some clear skies and dry ground… Hope your power is back on soon!

Blowtorch – amazing – but wait until you graduate to acetyline! Power.

Yikes, no power makes me panicky. No water makes me more panicky. Our water comes from a well, and we’ve had it go down a few times. Freaks me out. GOOD LUCK!
