Preparing for the Big Snow

by Susan on February 5, 2010

So, we are getting between 26-40 inches of snow if the next two days. Yes, you read that right. Up to four flippin’ feet of snow. Enough already with the snow.

Yesterday, Paige and I took Lucy for her last post-accident check-up with Dr. Johnson.

Paige trying to get Lucy into the car.

Lucy loves everyone at Fork Union Animal Clinic; she just hates riding in the car to get there! Maremmas get very, very car sick. In spite of skipping breakfast, Lucy managed to throw up in the way back of my station wagon.

You’ll be happy to hear that Miss Lu is, according to our vet, 100% gorgeous and amazing. The tenderness on her abdomen is gone, so we can finally take her off the NSAIDs that replaced the steroids she had been taking. Her lungs and heart sound perfect. In short, Lucy is healed.

Lucy celebrated her clean bill of health by playing with Sabine in the snow, her favorite past time.

Sabine is such a good girl. She’s just good-natured and so very patient with Lucy. She also appears to need her nails trimmed.

And Cini? Cini is the hardest working dog in show biz. He always protects his flock, even the jerks like Roquefort.

This picture totally reminds me of the beginning of America’s Next Top Model.

Yay! First to comment! I’m soooo happy that Miss Lucy is fully healed…and even more adorable than ever! I love that she has found such a good home and a great friend in Sabine! I’m impressed with how much snow you’re supposed to get – here in Boston, we’re not going to get any! :( Maybe you could send some my way?

Mich February 5, 2010 at 9:38 am

And people say our climate isn’t changing. We in VA rarely used to get snow, and I think we’ve already broken records for accumulation this year.

I am soooooo glad that Lucy is healthy again! She’s absolutely adorable.

Good luck with the snow, hope everyone stays nice and warm and power isn’t lost (or at least not for long). You may want to call your snow plowing angel and ask if he could help you out once the snow stops. ^_~

Meanwhile I’m trying to decide if I’d rather have your snow, or the freezeing rain that we out here in the Tidewater are supposed to get. I’m thinking snow, ice sucks.

Elana February 5, 2010 at 9:48 am

Yay for strong dogs! What a huge relief!

And think of it as time to knit, cook, make granola, watch movies, etc. Catch up on things and also chill out.

No snow here. Just cold and wind and the fireplace for me.

Jennifer February 5, 2010 at 9:53 am

Lucy, the wonder dog! I’m so very glad she is healed. Thanks, as always for the photos.
Good luck with the snow storm.

Kristen February 5, 2010 at 10:07 am

Hurray for Lucy! I love seeing the pics of her romping with Sabine, just makes me happy :)
Good luck with the big storm…wish we’d get some here in VT, we could sure use it. Hunker down with some knitting and a good movie and enjoy.

I am so happy to hear that Lucy is better. I was so worried for her! Good luck with the snow!

Sara Byron February 5, 2010 at 10:22 am

Yes, the nails need trimming! Bought myself (for the dog) one of those pet-i-cure nail files – but haven’t worked up the nerve to use it yet. I tried a dremel once with the result that it scared the crap out of my dog. Literally. All over me. The peticure is much quieter. I really hate nail trimming. Good thing I don’t have to trim anyones hooves either.
Hooray for Lucy! And we need more snow in Chicago – it’s just ugly right now. Dirty snow – like shortening and brown sugar.

Nancy February 5, 2010 at 10:37 am

Lucy looks great – healthy and happy. Such a relief.

Puddytat purr February 5, 2010 at 10:58 am

Oh Susie, When we think about how close to losing her you were, we all panicked and worried and cried with you…and look at her now!

She’s beautiful and gorgeous (glad that vet knows his stuff!) and I hope she continues to give you many happy years!

*Hugs to you, Paige and all the four-feets* from the UK

Quit exaggerating, willya? You’ll sure know the difference between 40 inches and 4 feet if you’re the one doing the shoveling. ;)

(I am always, always the one doing the shoveling. Sigh.)

SO GLAD to hear that Lucy is completely recovered!!! Wow. Gotta love the bounce-back-ability of the youngsters :)

erinkristi February 5, 2010 at 11:13 am

Great news about Lu! great pics, too. Enjoy the snow (ha ha).

heather February 5, 2010 at 11:35 am

Hooray for healthy pups! Good luck with the snow.

Linda S. February 5, 2010 at 12:13 pm

Thank goodness that little girl is back to her old self. Had us worried there . . . BTW, what makes Roquefort a jerk? (Humungous ol’ Alabama makes the goats look anorexic in comparison).

vismajor February 5, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Hooray! It’s so great that Lucy received a clean bill of health! That’s wonderful news. :)

(And that last picture also reminded me of the beginning of ANTM.)

Mary February 5, 2010 at 1:04 pm

So very happy that Lucy is well again. As for Sabine’s nails–don’t trim ‘em yet. She may need them for all the snow (dog’s version of studded tires).

I’m a bit upcountry from you–by the Chesapeake Bay about 30 miles south of Annapolis…so the news/radio have been calling the event various things, such as SnowMyGod, Snowpocalypse, SnowNo as we are suppose to get 20-30″, too.

Best of luck keeping the flock fed and watered over the next few days.

Carolyn C February 5, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Only your sheep are much more attractive than the contestants!
Also love your Polar Pups (who look a little like Polar bears in the snow.

So happy to hear about Lucy’s clean bill of health!!! Hunker down for the major snow – I cannot even imagine (especially since I live in Louisiana – Geaux Saints). LOVE, love, love the ANTM comparison! Your gals are so much more photogenic.

Erin L February 5, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Yea, Lucy!
Sigh, we’ve had pathetic snowfall in Chicago this year. I’d love to get a couple of feet–four is a bit much.

Jan February 5, 2010 at 5:20 pm

Preparing for snow storm…batteries for flashlights, check. Wood for the wood stove, check…drinkable water…check…food for self and critters, check…Whatever else you will need to be snowbound and possibily without power for a couple days (in my case that would be chocolate and X-country skis). Just think of what it was like before they had satilites that could tell us when big weather was moving our way.
Looks like Lucy could use some getting used to the leash in addition to getting used to being in cars. My two new Border collie puppies are getting both. Glad to hear she is doing well.

Maureen J (mljan) February 5, 2010 at 7:01 pm

It was after a snow like you’re expecting that I got the hell out of Chicago and into California. Never regretted it.
Now, rain causes us to light a fire, make soup, etc..

Keep warm and safe. I’m trying to imagine the work you’ll go through to get to the critters for feeding.

--Deb February 5, 2010 at 7:12 pm

Except for the car part, she looks so happy! Yay!

turtle February 5, 2010 at 8:04 pm

lol at the ANTM comment! Whoa, look at those nails! So glad that Lucy is well. I heard on the news that the storm is headed your way, they were cancelling flights yesterday for the weekend!

muffinista February 5, 2010 at 9:37 pm

heh – you said ‘way back.’ my mom had a succession of station wagons when i was a girl and we always called it the ‘way back’ too.

Shelley Noble February 6, 2010 at 3:47 am

Soooooooo nice to hear! Take good care of each of your precious lambs, including you!

Cindy aka counting goats February 6, 2010 at 8:07 am

The pictures are wonderful, thanks, they made my day.

Anna D. February 6, 2010 at 9:51 am

Hey Susie….I bet middle-of-nowhere Texas doesn’t sound so bad today…. :=). Stay warm, enjoy the “forced” knitting/relaxing time and remember that lambing is just around the corner, so sleep while you can! Hope you are feeling better too, from the ickiness you felt the other day.

yvonne February 6, 2010 at 10:28 am

So glad Lucy got a clean bill of health! She is one lucky lucky girl! I know that made your heart sing.
Sabine, da’ling, you must make an appointment for a manicure. You are so beautiful, we can’t have you running around with ugly feet.
Cini, good job, ol’ boy!

Maggie February 6, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Ears! Those things are killing me!

And is that Alabama in the next to last picture who is BIGGER THAN CINI?! Well, almost bigger than. What a massive sheep!

Melissa L February 6, 2010 at 3:25 pm

I am so thrilled to hear that sweet Lucy has made a full recovery!

Your last picture of the sheep group shot, a la America’s Next Top Model is hysterical :)

Cate February 6, 2010 at 10:22 pm

Try ginger snaps for car sickness. Lots of dog folks swear by them. Glad Lucy is doing so well.

Diane February 7, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Kenny and I are so happy for you all and Lucy – enjoy the snow and stay safe and warm.

Heather February 7, 2010 at 10:10 pm

aw i’m so glad lucy is okay!

Sharon Rose February 11, 2010 at 2:23 pm

OMG those claws!!! Looks like a polar bear!! :)
