Since you asked…

I have gotten about a million emails asking for details about my new camera. Y’all are persistent!

My old camera is a Nikon D40. The new one in the Nikon D3000. The D3000 is the newer model of the D40. Confusing, yes? Both are Nikon’s entry-level digital SLR.

Why did I replace one entry-level camera with another? Because in the three or four years I’ve had the D40, I really didn’t learn all that much about capital-P Photography. I think my picture taking improved because I took pictures nearly every single day, but there is for sure a lot of room for improvement.

The cool thing is that both of my go-to lens work with both cameras, so I only had to buy the camera body. That dropped the price dramatically. I saved more by doing a little research and purchasing it on ebay.

The coolest thing about the D3000 is the guide mode that walks you through, step-by-step, different shooting scenarios. For example, if you want to shoot a portrait and want the background to be blurred and soft, it will walk you through lowering the aperture. So you actually learn a lot about the camera while getting the pictures you want.

When my old camera gets back from the repair shop I’ll take some apples-to-apples comparison pics so you can see the difference. The D40 is still for sale and you might be able to find a really good deal on one now that it’s replacement is out.

Hey Susie, It’s not the camera, it is WHAT YOU DO with it! And your photos look wonderful lately with the D3000

Hey Susie–totally off the subject of the camera, but I made your granola this afternoon & didn’t have quite enough coconut, so I substituted the rest with flax seed meal. If it tastes OK, I think I may experiment with using that in place of coconut–still fatty like the coconut, but healthy omega-3 fatty acids instead of sat fat. What do you think?

I have made the granola with flax seed too and it is great – the seed;s though, not the meal.

I got a Canon D60 for my Birthday and find it intimidating – i am forcing myself to use it and read the instructions…… into level is good!

Hi Suzan,
I have camera envy. I learned photograpy on my dad’s Zeiss SLR when I was in high school. Getting lenses and repairs became difficult so I gravitated to an Olympus and eventually a decade and a half ago, I broke down and got a Nikon, which I love. Then the digital camera revolution came and I was in sorrow that my film camera became obsolete. I *HATE* point-n-shoot cameras, especially for taking photos of animals, because they take so much time to take the shot and you can’t set the f-stop that you want. But I can’t afford a digital SLR with my farm budget (and most of my Nikon lenses are not very compatible). I have compromised by recently getting an Olympus point-and-shoot that is freeze-proof, water-proof and shock-proof and fits in my pocket. So at least this way, if I fall in the stream or the camera falls and gets stomped on by the sheep, I haven’t ruined the camera. And I don’t have to run back to the house for it. I will just have to resign myself to less than perfect pictures. Yours are very nice–good composition and good equipment.
