First of all, THANK YOU!!! All of you for your prayers, positive thoughts, kind words and contributions to Lucy’s vet bill fund. I will post much more on this later, but I didn’t want to let another moment go by without expressing my gratitude to every single one of you. The last 24 hours have been horrible, but less so because of you.
Erin and Paige took Lucy to the vet today and they were very pleased with her progress. Her breathing is still labored and her lungs bruised but the doctor was optimistic about her recovery. They were especially inpressed with how well Lucy is walking. The only concern now is that she has been on steroids to bring the swelling down since the accident so the vet is unsure of how injured she really is. Once the steroids wear off (in ten hours or so) they will have a better idea of how difficult it will be for her to breath.
The vet has instructed us to continue to confine Lucy to a crate for at least five more days to keep her from causing herself further injury and to bring her back in at the first sign of distress or in a few days even if she seems fine. She isn’t out of the woods yet but things look pretty good right now.
Several people have asked how the accident happened. We really don’t know for sure as Paige and Erin were both out when she was hit. The neighbor next door witnessed the accident and ran outside to try help Lucy, but wouldn’t let the neighbor get close. The puppy ran to the back of our property. The neighbor left a note on my car explaining that Lucy had been hit which Paige found when she returned home from the post office. Paige immediately scooped Lucy up and headed to the vet’s office, where Erin met her shortly.
Lucy has never even come close to escaping the fence near the front of the property and we are all baffled by what drew her there. She will occasionally climb through the fence to follow one of us, but we’ve been working very hard to break her of this habit and she seemed to understand that she was expected to stay with her flock. I don’t know if she was chasing something- an animals or whatever- but we clearly need to do more to prevent this happing again and today, Paige and Erin set up perma net fencing around the pasture Lucy and Sabine are in.

Maybe she was playing “I’m the toughest dog in the world” and decided to impress Sabine by chasing away a blowing leaf. Who knows? thank goodness your neighbor left the note. Hugs to you and thank goodness for Erin and Paige. Big hugs to them too.

Glad to hear the progress report! I was in a horrible meeting all day, and when I got in the car to drive home from work, the first thing I thought was, “In 45 minutes I can check on Lucy!”

Hope the good news continues.
Glad Lucy is home and doing better! Hope she continues to improve and heal quickly. It is so hard when our dogs are not well
I’m so glad to hear she is okay. I feel your pain – during thanksgiving I was out of town and my friend was watching my dog, Elvis. He started throwing up and wouldn’t stop for 2 days. Was taken to the vet and then the ER vet and had surgery for an obstruction. $3300 late he is okay but its a long road for me to pay it off. I don’t have a spouse either to help.
Best wishes for a full recovery for Lucy.
Thank you for the update! The pictures make me want to take out a second mortgage on my house, so you should probably continue to post those.
Big hugs to you all!!
(Gentle) Hugs to you and Lucy!
Oh this is such good news! All three of you and Lucy have been on my mind all day.
PS Noticed the reference to Rescue Remedy. It is good for YOU too! I use it routinely for stress but always wondered how effective it was. Then while visiting my parents and staying in a hotel my husband BADLY broke and dislocated his ankle. Believe me when I say the stuff works!
I’m so happy Lucy is doing better. I’m sending healing thoughts to her.

Poor baby girl. I hope good news continues.
Thanks everyone for all your kind words and help! I can’t tell you how much it means to us to have all of your support. Lucy is bedded down for the night in my room – she hates to be left alone, so Paige and I are taking turns puppysitting – and she is resting comfortably. We will keep you posted on her progress!
All my prayers and thoughts are with you an Lucy, Paige and Erin through this struggle. I have a good feeling that Lucy will improve with each hour. xoxoxo
Be strong.
Go Lucy! She seems like a feisty gal and with all of us pulling for all of you, hope is beautiful.
We all love Lucy! Sending much love to you and the entire Juniper Moon family for having/going through such an awful time. May each day bring only joy from now on, for the best.
I’m so glad Lucy is doing better. Remember Lucy – things with four wheels are bad unless you are in one with the window down! They are bigger than you and their bite is much worse than your bark!
Hugs!
I am glad we have pictures of Lucy. It’s good to see her. Lots of good happy healing thoughts from my Lucy to yours!
Thanks so much for the update! Wishing you and Lucy the best and that she has a speedy recovery
I’ve been a FT farmer for 6 years now. I’ve had numeriuos struggles but never doubted my decision to leave a steady paying job for this incredible life. I’ve been following your blog for the last several months and have often wondered how you manage to never have any struggles. I just assumed you must be very wealthy and could just pay for things that most of us farmers cannot (like two employees). I really appreciate you cander and honesty. I love your blog and I love the illussion that you create with only posting about the bright side of farming, I can only speak for myself but I have more of an apreciation knowing you too have moments of strife that you will undoubtly get through to also share with your readers. I’m pulling for all of you and Lucy. Keep on writtin’
So glad to hear she is doing better! I pray she has a speedy recovery.
Our dog was hit by a car back in 2000. She shattered one of her legs and the other hip was out of socket. Her vet bills were scary. But, she’s still with us 10 years later! I pray Lucy will have a long wonderful life ahead of her also.
What great news. I am glad to hear she is doing better. Hopefully when the steroids wear off she will still be breathing well enough. Give Lucy a kiss from your readers on the interwebs. =)
My hopes for the best for Lucy and for you, Erin, and Paige.
Dear Susan, Paige and Erin, and Lucy,
My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you. How wonderful that for right now Lucy seems to be holding her own and even walking. I’m going to continue to send hopeful thoughts in your direction. You are all doing amazingly well under very stressful circumstances, and Susan, thank you for keeping us all so well updated.
Hugs to you all,
Molly
So sorry to hear this! What a beautiful dog. I’m so glad she’s going to be okay.
