A Solstice Miracle

by Susan on December 21, 2009

This morning we woke up to Day Three of being snowed in. Now, normally, I’d just as soon stay snowed in forever, but – in spite of some serious rationing on my part – we ran out of Diet Pepsi this morning. So I was thrilled when the county finally got around to plowing our road.

But my happiness was short-lived. As Erin pointed out, we still had to get out of our driveway, an impossibility without it being plowed first. See, everyone told us that it never snows much down here and it hadn’t occurred to me to arrange a plow service. (In my defense, they’re calling this a 20 year storm.) But I was determined to get to the market today in the way that only a woman separated from caffeine can be. I went on Craigslist to find a plow service but the prospects were grim. All the regular plow guys had posted notices about 10 hour delays. They were accepting emails but it was unlikely that they’d get to us today.

And then a miracle happened. A handsome young man in Carhartts rang our doorbell and politely asked if we needed our driveway plowed.

His name is Tosh.

He lives up the road.

And we are all a little bit in love with him.

Only a little bit? I’d be a lotta-bit in love with him!

OMG Erin and Paige must be so relieved that you are going to make it to the Diet Pepsi-source today.

What a great day it is! Cute boys and diet Pepsi!!! Is it already Christmas???
I’m bringing my snow shoes when I come…just in case :)

I LOVE this story!

mydogpetey December 21, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Someone knit that man a scarf and gloves pronto!

woolies December 21, 2009 at 12:42 pm

My diet coke addiction is strong. I would have fashioned cross country skis or taught the goaties to pull a sleigh, if the quite adorable Tosh hadn’t just happened along. Phew!

GeekKnitter December 21, 2009 at 1:00 pm

He’s on the knitting list, right?

Hoohhhh Tosh. You’re in trouble, buddy…

dina (dinaknitsinmd) December 21, 2009 at 3:31 pm

Yay for Tosh! and hip hip hooray for young buff neighbor boys willing to help a girl(s) out. Mine took care of my car and parking space for me. Other male neighbors shoveled all the common walkways and my walkway. I felt like a hedonist all cozy inside while all the menfolk toiled away. It was wonderful.

Glad you got your Pepsi fix. I ran out this weekend too but I had coffee so the caffeine fix was taken care of. Still missed my Pepsi though.

Gotta love country living…all the young men are so helpful :) And I bet if you get stuck in a snowbank some nice young hunk will stop and pull you out within minutes. The guys around here literally drive around in storms looking for people to help out of the ditch.
Definitely make Tosh a hat :) Or some cookies…

All hail Tosh! Liberator of the shepherdesses! Whee!

miss ewe December 21, 2009 at 4:33 pm

Ooo, I agree with Kristen… Tosh appears to be knit-free in that picture. His neck looks cold…

What a cutie! And handy too.

Tina December 21, 2009 at 5:29 pm

You met an “angel” today!
I love reading your blogs. I get so disappointed if I sign on before you have posted for the day (or if you need to skip a day or two). Your humor and outlook really inspire me.

I love it! The kindness of neighbors! I think we have traded off so much with our neighbors and i can’t imagine living any other way! (so sad that it took soda though to make you all antsy!)

Louise Edsall December 21, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Tosh just became your best four letter word…. yea for solstice miracles.

Deb Clemens December 21, 2009 at 7:52 pm

this is the stuff that happens in the movies!

Nancy Lawlor December 21, 2009 at 8:11 pm

That’s too funny-even my husband laughed!

Susan aka reddirt December 21, 2009 at 8:27 pm

So now if something wonderful happens will we say “Well that’s just Tosh!” :-) And yes, he needs knitted things to go with his new found fame!

Melissa December 21, 2009 at 8:45 pm

We used to have a wonderful older neighbor who would do the same for us. It made us so sad when we had to move away as we miss them a great deal. It’s wonderful to have the kindness of strangers/neighbors who become friends.

luckydog December 21, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Tosh isn’t stupid– 3 beautiful women move in just down the road from him, and it just “happens” to snow a bit…

I’ll bet this isn’t the last Juniper Moon Farm sees of Tosh. Hee!

Dragan December 21, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Tosh is just about the best name for the hero of this story. Yay getting plowed out!

Wendy December 21, 2009 at 9:57 pm

The Solstice arrives and there is more light in the world, in more ways than one! I do like the tractor…(of course, that probably isn’t what it is called is it?)

Kay Slaughter December 22, 2009 at 9:10 am

Every girl needs a plow connection. You really scored here.

Melissa December 22, 2009 at 10:03 am

Yay for Tosh!

Ann December 22, 2009 at 12:26 pm

oh, my.

JacobsReward December 22, 2009 at 12:30 pm

May bundles of blessings fall on Angel Tosh. And may baskets of blessings continue to fall on all the inhabitants of Juniper Moon Farm. xoxo

laura December 22, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Chivalry is alive and very handsome! I hope you all invite Tosh over for some of that eggnog. . .

Spinneret December 22, 2009 at 8:11 pm

In snow country a man’s attractiveness is in direct proportional relationship with the size of his … er … plow. And they drive around waving them. hysterical. NIce plow Tosh.

Elise December 24, 2009 at 6:34 pm

A 20 year storm?! I’m from VA, and I can tell you that we had even more snow than you currently have in 1996, and a similar storm in 2003, I believe. It’s more like a five-to-seven-year storm, I’m sorry to say. (For the record, I live in Chicago now and we’ve had maybe 4 inches the whole season!)

Yvonne in southwest Virginia December 25, 2009 at 6:26 pm

I’ve lived here for 20 years…and it’s the first time our little mountain town ever lost power for more than a couple of hours. I just got power back today…after 8 days.

Tosh is a fine example of why I continue to live in this part of the country. The people are awesome! No strangers here—just mostly friends you haven’t met yet.

Jodi Renshaw December 25, 2009 at 10:29 pm

Wonderful story. I would be a bit in love to in a knight in shining Carhart came to my door and offered to plow with a rather large piece of equipment.

Kerry June 1, 2010 at 10:05 pm

Is he single? Who doesn’t love a man in carharts, drives a tractor, is kind enough to plow someone’s drive… AND – bonus- he’s made nice with the shepherdess. I’ll marry him. :) Sign me up.
