Because it’s Friday. Because I’m feeling a wee bit overwhelmed. Because it’s an absolutely beautiful, blue-sky kind of day. Because it’s way more fun than all the yarn dyeing I must do today.
Because of all of that I’m giving away the last September Surprise box of yarn. To enter, leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite thing about fall.
Entries close Sunday night at midnight, EST. I’ll post the winner- chosen at random- here on Monday morning. The winner will have 24-hours to claim his or her (but probably her) prize, after which another winner will be chosen. One entry per person please. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Favourite thing about fall/autumn – we have an orchard near us called Sunny Slope, and they make the best cider ever. They wait until the middle of October, until they have a good blend of apples, including our favourites, Winesaps. It’s very tasty, cold out of the fridge, or warmed through. Not to mention all of the apples they sell – we don’t buy apples the rest of the year because we’re spoiled by the best seasonal apples in the autumn.
Sweaters are a good enough reason for me to love fall, but I just drove up Provo Canyon, and I have to say that the canyon in the fall is my favorite thing. Brilliant colors cascading down a snow-peaked mountain in the early morning just takes my breath away.
What I like best about fall is the changing leaves, I am just overwhelmed each year at the beauty of it all. The reds, the russets, the yellows and then they are gone. I really enjoy rustling through the fallen leaves also.
i love the cooler weather. i hate the heat of summer, so it’s so nice to have cooler weather, drink hot tea and apple cider, and be able to snuggle up and knit!
My favourite thing about Fall is the smell of wet leaves and the cool air. You can knit in public without people saying things like, “Socks?? In the summer??!! Don’t you think it’s a bit hot for that??” It prevents me from having to explain how long it actually takes me to knit a sock (let alone a pair of socks).
My favorite thing about fall is the changing colors of the leaves, but I sure do hate to rake them.
My favorite thing about fall is the crisp weather and all it brings- wearing sweaters and corduroy, the beautiful changing leaves, the smell of woodstoves and chimneys, and delicious fresh apples. It really is my favorite season.
My favorite things are the leaves and comfort food
Fall is my favorite season! And my favorite thing about it is the smell of the cooler crisp air. I love so many things – the harvest of the winter squash, picking apples at the orchard, the beautiful colors of the falling leaves, but that wonderful scent in the air is the very best part.
My favorite thing about fall is all of the color. Its like everything is saying goodbye before the white of winter.
Fall is my favorite season, October my favorite month. I love the crisp smell of the air, that slowly starts to sneak in in late Summer nights. But my absolute favorite is the Ashfield Fall Festival, a fair in the tiny town of Ashfield, MA. Except last year and and sadly this year, I’d gone every year since I was a small kid. It’s on the town green and includes craft tents, a huge dump truck of split fire-wood raffle, kid-made games, local musicians, food (most importantly apple pie served with a chunk of sharp cheddar cheese) and artists. When I was little it was a great experience to be given $5 dollars and set loose for a day to get maple sugar cotton candy, to climb the twisted rope latter to ring a bell at the top (to everyone’s cheering) and join in the pumpkin games. As I got older I started to enjoy the crafts and join in with the Morris dancers who perform as part of their Harvest Ale. It is my very favorite part of Fall.
My favorite thing about fall is being able to wear long sleeves and hunkering down for the evening in a chair with some hot tea, my cats in my lap, some knitting (although with these cats it is sometimes difficult to get any knitting done).and a good movie.
My favorite thing about Fall is the changing of the leaves. I love New England in the Fall and seeing the brilliant colors. However, I don’t like raking them up
I love the changing of the leaves, wearing my knitted items, hot chocolate, pumpkin pie
The bright crisp weather & the decorations-pumpkins, gourds, etc.
oo.. There’s so much to love about fall. Hot caramel apple cider. The gorgeous colors of the trees. The crisp, cool air that you never quite get any other time of the year. Halloween! (And leftover Halloween candy…)
um, Rhinebeck!
I love being able to wear my knit hats and scarves again!
The best part of fall is Halloween and see all the little ones in their costumes and watching them grow over the years. Also I get to give away all those scarfs and hats that I have been knitting over the summer. Plus its time ot pull out the big knitting projects that were put away for the summer.
Layered clothing – cool, crisp mornings and cozying up with my knitting and hot tea.
I have soooo many favorite things about fall: the weather, the beautiful colors, Halloween, college football and of course, all of the wonderful comfort foods that I don’t make during the summer when it is hot outside. But my absolute favorite thing about fall is that my husband and I will be celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary on October 16th. We got married way back in 1982 and our honeymoon included a wonderful trip to (drum roll please!) MARTHA’S VINEYARD!!!
My absolute favorite thing about fall is that it’s cool enough (at least where I live!) to wear your hand-knit sweaters and mittens and not have to wear a jacket over it. I love wrapping myself up in things that I’ve made.
Apples. Apple pie, apple cider. Back when I lived in New Hampshire, riding my bike to the apple orchard. Buying apples and cheddar and eating myself sick. Fresh good local apples.
I love it when fall is in the air, in the trees and in the light. Yes, I love the light most of all.
It’s hard to pick just one thing, I love Fall. I love the cool air, and the brilliant colors, and fresh apples, and canning to preserve the harvest, and being able to wear socks and sweaters, and getting started on the gift knitting. I’m a MN girl currently living in TX and I miss Fall so much!
Fall is my favorite season, and for the first time in a few years, we’re actually living somewhere we can enjoy it. Texas didn’t get much of a Fall, but Colorado is taking my breath away. The leaves are starting to turn brilliant shades of red and gold. It makes me want to cuddle up next to the fireplace with a hot cup of coffee and one of the many knitting projects I have going!
The first cozy fire in the woodstove, my DH’s first batch of warm oatmeal cookies, and cats curled up in the knitting baskets.
My favourite thing about fall is breaking out the old handknit mitts and scarfs (which we had to do yesterday) and premiering the new knits that were made since last winter.
the crisp air, preserving food for the winter ahead, and apple cider donuts. (and, of course, wool!)
The crispness of the weather makes me drag out my cookbooks for some lovely recipes that cook all day, warm the kitchen, scent the house, and provide luscious dinners and desserts. Inspirational time!
The way the leaves on my Katsura tree scent the air as they change color. They smell like ripe apricots!
crisp apples; cold cheeks; crunchy leaves; swish swish swish in the raked up piles along the side of the road; last few chilly raspberries on our fall-bearing bushes; chicken noodle soup with lots of black pepper; all the stubborn living things and the letting go things juxtaposed against each other, decline and defiance abound.
My favorite thing about fall is cuddly cats. The little heatseakers start getting cold and snuggle up to share bodyheat.
Have a great weekend, Susie.
I love the Vineyard in the fall. I love it when my husband makes an outdoor fire and I can sit there in a sweater and knit with my favorite kind of yarn-yours of course. I love the peaceful zen feeling of the island. I feel so sad on Columbus Day when we have to close up our place. The only thing that gets me through winter is my stash of yarn and the vineyard webcams. I hope to see at the last Farmers Market of the season-hugs to you and your beautiful lambs
Oh, that the leaves are falling and look so pretty. That there is finally a fire on in the fireplace again. That I can have tea more than only a few times a day. That fall/winter food is sooo great. And that it is getting so cold – not for the cold, but then I really have reasons to knit up warm, thick garments for myself. Yay for fall…
Favorite thing about fall is the weather…the coolness in the air, the last of the occasional bright blue sky and finally the rains settling in. I know – rainy Seattle is a cliche – but I love that when the rains come, we light the fire and our candles and just settle in for long evenings together, knitting, reading, watching TV and listening to the rain on the roof.
We get a huge bounty of late summer fruits and vegetables here in the fall (they still have strawberries at the farmstand down the street), so eating beautiful food from the garden is a big part of it. But my very favorite part is that sweet crispness that sneaks into the air around this time. Last weekend we had a ferocious heat wave (103 on Sunday), but by evening it somehow felt like Fall again . . .
i know its obvious, but i love the change in seasons, and even though i have out of school for 5+ years, i still get that “back to school” feeling… new pencils, new books, new ideas, inspirations, motivations. the fun of summer winds down and it’s time to focus! i love that about fall. it’s clear and focused. oh, and i finally get to start wearing all the lovely things i knit when the weather gets cold!
Well it’s just got to be the colours hasn’t it? I can also start getting all my warm handknits out again :0)
I love just about everything about fall: the weather, the food (apples! butternut squash soup! more apples!), the beautiful leaves, and on and on.
But my favorite thing is the feeling of starting cozy/exciting things. Fall is the time to start heavy-duty knitting, do any canning, look ahead to holiday gatherings, start school (or watch others start school, which has a certain vindictive joy), pull out sweaters/corduroys/thick socks, go to apple festivals/fairs, be a kid again at Halloween, and it’s the time that I enjoy spending lots of time outside just soaking in the last of the sun before winter starts.
Apples, sweaters, fires in the fireplace, no snow to shovel (yet) and the end of seasonal allergies ~ just a few of my favorite things about fall.
Clear blue skies (although they seem to be a bit absent from Ithaca this week) contrasting the brilliant oranges, reds and golds of the turning trees. And the smells, nothing like the earthiness of fallen leaves mixed with the warm smoke from fireplaces. Thanks for another Surprise Giveaway – You’re the best!
Definitely the changing of the leaves… there’s just something magical about seeing a hillside of trees awash in different varieties of color. Reds, yellows, oranges.
Oh, goodness, just one? This is probably my favorite time of the year – colored leaves, cool weather, even the occasional blustery day (sweater weather!)…spiced cider…
My favorite thing about fall — it’s hard to choose! — is the weather, complete with crisp air.
Cool nights, the colors, even in Southern California, and the distinct blue of the sky!
Cool nights, the colors even here in Southern California, and the distinct blue of the sky.
I love the smell of fall – pot roast, apple pie, a nice fire, pumpkin beer…I mean pie, & new yarn.
Wow, only one favourite thing about fall? Well, I just found the first of the fall honeycrisp apples at my grocery store, which is delightful
(Bonus – other favourites are finally wearing all my sweaters, and making soup at least once a week!)
my favorite thing about fall is the color. how can you not love the site of a maple tree ablaze in reds and oranges? its such a beautiful time of year.
Two words: college football.
I love the changing colors, the brisk air, having friday night movie nights, the fullness of my pantry, the returning desire to knit and spin big warm projects, the opportunity to wear the hand knit items in my closet, and seeing my friends pull out the items I have made for them. Fall is when wither is exciting and something to look forward too.
I love so many things about fall, I don’t think I can pick one favorite thing!
I love the first cool days, the first time you need a sweatshirt, when I can curl up on the couch with a blanket and a cup of tea (and a cat or two, of course!) to read a good book. I love the leaves changing, seeing all of the beautiful colors on the trees on a crisp, blue sky morning makes driving in to work just a little bit easier. For me, fall also means a return to going walking. I hate walking when it’s hot and humid, but I love being outside when the air is cool. I also love knowing that the holidays are coming, I look forward to that time every year, since it means I’ll have a couple of weeks away from lab spending time with friends and family, and the anticipation makes me love the start of fall. Fall is like a last hurrah before the dark, cold winter, and so I try to cherish every day of it.
I live in California where seasons are, shall we say, more subtle than in other parts of the country. Fall, however, is my favorite season. The air takes on a crispness, and the air stays a little cooler, even when the sun is high and bright. I love pulling out sweaters and hats and scarves that have been tucked away for the last few months (not that we don’t need a sweater now and again in the fog, but it feels so fallish). We can eat Dungeness crab with melted butter, make pear crisps. Ah. We even have leaves fall crunching to the ground.
Awesome.
When I was a freshman in high school, I had a wicked crush on a senior. I finally had a chance to actually speak to him on a gorgeous day in early fall, standing at the bus stop as red and orange leaves drifted down around us from the over-arching trees.
My heart raced as we chatted because I notice he kept staring at my red hair. Abruptly he interrupted our chat to say, “You know, your hair reminds me of the color of dead leaves.”
Heart sinks.
Over the course of the year, however, we got to be friends, and on his last day of high school he signed my yearbook “You know, I was always disappointed that your hair didn’t turn green in the spring.”
Smile.
So. The smell of new notebooks carried at the beginning of school years – the glow of even a hopeless crush – the promise of renewal even as something fades – an awkward girl coming to terms with her family legacy (hair the color of dead leaves). And Josh.
These are things I love about fall.
My favorite thing about fall is bittersweet; it’s watching the butterflies do their final dance.
Well, there are a lot of things I like about fall, but probably the best thing is that I was married in the fall and I loved my wedding–the colors, the food, the flowers, everything about it. I love raked leaves, I love the acorns that fall under my front yard trees, I love watching the squirirels gathering and storing up for the winter; fall means Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are right around the corner, and I love the smells of those seasons–pumpkin, pine trees, and all the holiday spices; and I love that Mac, my sweet Westie, comes alive in the autumn because of the cooler weather–his coat gets shinier, his eyes brighter, and he just perks right up. I’m really looking forward to reading all the entries for this particular contest because autumn is my favorite season. It’ll be fun to see what others love about it too.
Mmm.. fall
My very favorite thing is making apple crisp. (I make a killer apple crisp, if I do say so myself!) I like to use a couple different kinds of apples, usually Granny Smith plus something sweeter for more depth of flavor. Then an oatmeal-based topping, so it stays a little crunchy. Yummmmmm. OK, now I’m hungry!
So MANY things that are my favorite part of Fall, first and foremost the fact that after a hot summer, it feels like a breath of fresh air. In fact, I was just writing about it for my post for Joyful Jubilant Learning … here’s a snippet:
“I wake up in Autumn after suffering through a torpid summer of baking in the heat that leaves me feeling beaten and steamed–and about as energetic as that lobster on your plate after similar treatment. The cool, crisp days of autumn wake me up like a cold drink on a hot day. The sky is suddenly ultra-blue, the kind of blue you hadn’t realized you even missed behind the hazy skies of August. The trees put on a show of color, and pumpkins and apples make their appearance. (Because, let’s admit it, while you can buy apples year-round and world-round, they are by far their best in the fall.) ”
(And, we won’t even discuss that my birthday is in the fall, right?)
I love fall, it comes a few days after my birthday and the weather gets that nice crispness in the air. It means that apples are ripening and fresh apple cider will be found at the local farms (and I absolutely LOVE apples). It means the mosquitoes are finally going to die, or at least stop chasing me around the yard. It means beautiful colors in nature. It means football, and it also means hurricane season is coming to an end (we haven’t had one recently, but there’s always that chance). And it means that I can knit woolly things without people complaining that they’re sweating just look at my knitting! I LOVE fall, it and winter are my favorite seasons ever. Everything about it is a favorite!
my favorite thing about fall?? everything LOL.. its my absolute favorite season! If I had to choose it would be the feel..bright sun shiny days and crisp cool air..no better combonation out there
My favorite things about fall are the changing leaves and the cooling weather. Also love all the local fairs and festivals that happen this time of year, such great local produce, fabulous yarns, cider, maple treats. What’s not to love? Oh, and it starts to be sweater weather, all knitters love sweater weather, no?
My favorite thing about fall is that this is the time of year for pumpkin flavor! I love pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin torte, pumpkin pie…you get the idea, right? Yummy!
I love this time of year for cooking soups and stews with all the fall harvest veggies from the garden: parsnips, turnips, carrots, potatoes, leeks, yum! Top if all off with a piping hot, fresh loaf of bread from the oven. The scents of autumn filling my nostrils while gazing upon the beautiful fall foliage in my toasty warm kitchen. Evenings in the easy chair with a mug of Lemon Ginger Tea and my latest knitting project.
Sweaters! Colorful leaves! Really getting into the school routine. But mostly sweaters.
What I love most about Autumn is the bittersweet beauty of it all. How strange that my favorite season presages my least favorite. How lovely is that death of the green things. I love that complex perfume that floats on chilled air this time of year, the sweet dankness of decaying leaves with a high note of woodsmoke and crisp cold. Autumn is, obviously, my most favorite time of year, despite (and because of) all of this disparity.
Lying in bed with the window open and NEEDING to snuggle under my down comforter.
My favorite thing about fall is the smell, leaves, wood smoke and simmering comfort food. Always seems to make me happy and flooded with memories of other falls.
I love the colors. The mountains look like they are wearing brown cords and a cozy burgundy, gold, and deep green colored sweater. And the smells. Dying leaves and damp dirt. Crisp air. Fresh. And my scented candles. Time to bring out the candles,,,now that the dark is back! Thanks for the contest!
My favorite thing about fall is everything! It’s my favorite season. I love the cooling temperatures, the warm sweaters and hoodies, hats and mittens being resurrected from their summer storage, hot apple cider, candy corn, and turning, falling leaves.
My favorite thing about fall is the breath-taking beauty of a fall day! The air is crisp, a chilly breeze is blowing and the sky is bright blue! The trees are aglow and the air smells earthy! Also, it is when I get to break out my hand knits and make pumpkin pie without people looking at me like I have 2 heads?
Warm sweaters, stews, the colors, the cozy feeling of coming in from the crisp fall air…..pretty much everything!
Oh wow. This is incredibly generous of you. My favourite thing about the fall is the crispness of the air. I remember when I was younger our neighbours had a wood burning stove and it wasn’t really fall until I could watch the tufts of smoke drifting up and away from their chimney. I remember being amazed by that because the air here is so dry and when it’s colder it feels almost weightless and empty.. so much different than the heavy moist air from the coast. I couldn’t understand how the smoke could be so buoyant when the air was too thin to carry it away. I always assumed it was just dancing with the wind. I love the colour of the sky in the fall.. during the summer here it seems to choose this brilliant azur shade to match how vibrant the trees and flowers are. In the fall, it seems to mellow to a paler greyish blue that makes all the leaves pop. I don’t know. Fall is my favourite season. I could wax on for ever about fall but I won’t. Thanks again very much for having this contest. If I may be so bold, I really hope I win
I love the brilliant scarlet maple leaves of fall because they remind me of the ocean of them I used to walk through to get to school when I was little. I can’t look at them now without remembering that joy.
It’s hard to pick just one favorite thing about fall. One thing I love is that now that it’s getting colder, and I can start knitting with wool yarn again.
sweaters, and cozying up at home, and the gorgeous colors on the trees on my drive to work every day!
There is so much that I love about fall that it’s hard to pin down just one thing. Though when I think of fall, I think of fall leaves crunching under your feet and the smell that emanates from the crushing of dead leaves. So, I’d say that my favorite thing is the smell of fall. I currently live in Phoenix, AZ and really miss the fall more than anything else (though we do have it for about a week in Dec or Jan). I would love a box of your yarn. It’s so beautiful and I could dream of fall in the New England that I love.
My favorite thing about fall is going apple picking on those crisp chilly mornings and then coming home to bake fresh apple coffee cake.
My favorite season will always remain summer, but I do love pulling my sweaters and hats out of storage in preparation for the chilly (under 70 degrees, because I’m a wimp!) mornings and evenings here in Los Angeles.
I love the turning weather in autumn… time to go to the mountains without baking alive or being struck by lightening… and visiting all of the orchards and wineries up there. Apple pie and cider are good all year, but you can’t beat the very freshest stuff!
The wonderful smell of leaves! It may just be rot, but it’s lovely.
I live in the Hudson Valley, and my favorite thing about fall is driving across any of the bridges over the Hudson and looking at the amazing colors in the leaves. absolutely gorgeous.
i also love all the delicious squash we get from our CSA. soup time!
My favorite thing about Autumn is the smell and crispness of the air, possibly catching wind of a bonfire. Going on long walks in the early morning and seeing fog coming off Lake Michigan, and the dew on the grass. Just wonderful!
The thing I love most about fall is the crispness of the air and the fall colors.
I love the crisp air, crisp apples, soft sweaters and long forgotten slippers. A hot cup of tea while reading books with my 2yo. The sweet smell of rain, and the peak-a-boo sunshine.
my favorite thing about fall is that I start cooking again. All summer I make sandwiches, grill a little something and generally “fake it”. Once fall hits, I’m all about the cheesey potatoes, the spaghetti sauce, and lots of yummy caseroles! My second favorite thing is planning all my Christmas gifts. This year is going to be all handmade if I can get them all done
The box of yarn would certainly help with some of the scarves that I’m cooking up!
My favorite thing about fall is the cooler mornings and beautiful sunny afternoons that are not too hot! Oh yeah, and less humidity! That’s a big deal down here in south!
Hhhmmm…favorite thing about fall. It’s my favorite season, so it’s hard to narrow it down, but I’d say “football weather”. Cool, breezy days that make me want to watch football and eat chili by the fire.
Great giveaway!
My favorite thing about autumn is the changing color of the leaves. We have a small red maple in our back yard and it has almost completely changed already. Even though it’s raining here today, my little maple tree is colorful and cheerful.
I love the fall colors, the cooler weather and going to outdoor farmers markets, craft fairs and farm festivals without melting from the summer’s temperatures. I enjoy spinning and knitting and the anticipation of the coming holidays.
My favorite thing about fall is being curled up on the couch under blankets and cats with a craft project and my boyfriend. Being able to stay inside all cozy on the couch guilt-free because the weather is terrible anyway.
The smell of ripe apples and dried leaves on the cool afternoon breezes.
My favorite thing(s) about fall… The smell in the air, comfort food, pumpkins, crunchy leaves, wearing sweaters, knitting, planning my Tday feast, wrapping up with an old movie and a cup of hot tea, feeling the chill in the air, the rich colors of the leaves as they turn (yes, even in California), and crock pot dinners with warm bread. It was always a begining for me, new school clothes my mom made me, new books, like a fresh new page…. It has always been my favorite time of the year.
My favorite thing about fall is the coziness is brings around my house…the switch to the long sleeve pants and shirts, the piles of apples from apple picking with my girls, the pumpkins waiting to be turned into jack-o-lanterns, hot tea instead of iced tea…all of the little things that mean the end of summer and the switch to my favorite time of year. :O)
Knitting in front of a wood burning fire is my absolute favorite thing!
I live in Colorado where the Aspen trees turn brilliant gold against the evergreens and the clear bright sky. There is nothing quite like a modest hike in weather that is not 100 degrees with scenery like this. That, and this is when our 50 degree guarantee is most likely to occur – it is not uncommon for it to go from 80 degrees to snowing and back to 80 degrees in the space of a day or two. Meteorological whiplash anyone?
Just one?
Then I’ll have to go with the treasure which is our local apple orchard. Old varieties I can’t find anywhere else, and the cider is ambrosial!
My favorite thing about fall? Here in north Florida, for a few days, it feels just like spring, but the air smells like fall. It’s a fleeting, wonderful dichotomy.
My second favorite thing? I get to wear all the stuff I’ve been knitting during the summer!
Fall is my favorite season. I love the colors, the fresh, crisp apples, home grown squash and pumpkins. And the air. The air is just wonderful!
favorite things about fall:
1. apple dumplings from the orchard and
2. cool days filled w sunlight bouncing off colored trees!
thanks for asking@!
Gotta love the festivals they have at the apple orchards/farms in our area — They’re great fun for the kids!
I love the way the air feels, when it’s crisp and cool and dry and the sun is warm but the breeze is cool and all of my wool socks start seeming like the perfect thing to wear.
My most favorite things about fall are:
hoodies, hot tea, football, knitting, changing leaves, crisp air, and the fair
My absolute favorite thing about fall is Pumpkin. Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin Bread,Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Air Freshners, Pumpkins used in decorating. I love me some pumpkin. I’ve been making pumpkin cheesecakes lately, and if I keep that up, I will undoubtedly begin to resemble a pumpkin.
(Runners up for Favorite Thing About Fall: Leaves changing colors, sweaters, hot drinks, crisp smelling weather)
the smells, the crisp air, the colors, the anticipation of winter (yes, really
) – for me it always feels like the start of a new year (combination of back to school & Rosh Hashanah)
My favourite thing about fall (this year, at least), is the cooler weather.
I can’t pick just one favorite thing about autumn… so here’s a list:
apple picking, making yummy things from the apples I’ve picked, the crisp smell in the air, the foliage (hey, I live in Vermont, so it’s practically a LAW that I like foliage), the crunchy sound of leaves under my feet, kids going back to school, the next-door neighbor kids going back to school so the neighborhood is a bit quieter during the day, sleeping with the window open on the chilly nights, putting my garden to bed for the winter, and best best best of all? Getting my sweaters out of storage and ready to wear! (Oh, and planning all of my winter knitting… including what I would do with a September Surprise box!)
Sweater weather!
Autumn is my favorite time of year! Finally, a break from the brutal Texas heat. Then there are pumpkins, apples, so many things to harvest. But more than anything, I love the focus of nesting: knitting, creating, sewing, crafting, and all sorts of coziness!
Crunchy iridescent leaves, the bittersweet berries turning orange on the deck, cool nights and brisk days, Halloween, Halloween candy, little bitty trick-or-treaters, memories of the popcorn balls one lady used to give out as treats, hot apple cider, cold apple cider, spiked apple cider, hayrides, bonfires, ghost stories, apples, pumpkin pie, walks along the Avenue of the Pines, and of course knitting.
I like that its finally cool enough to wear one of the very cool scarves that I’ve knitted. It seems like I have far more scarves than are needed but I love wearing them.
Thanks Susan.
I don’t think I can pick just one thing! Fall is absolutely my favorite season, and I love just about everything about it–apple picking, the gorgeous colors, yummy fall foods, the cooler temperatures. I even love the dreary, rainy days–they’re great for staying in a knitting!!
My favorite thing about autumn is waking up after a crisp, cool night to a sunny, crisp, cool morning with a bit of a ground fog still laying on the ground and the sun just beginning to burn it off. That and the smell of wood fire smoke as some of my neighbors begin using their fireplaces once again. Ummmmmmmm!!!!
Fall is just so lovely because it cools down, and is still sunny and leaves change to beautiful colors. The very best part is the windows can be open and you can snuggle under the duvet and be comfy.
I love the way the yarn glides through my fingers and across the needles once the cool weather of fall sets in. I love the snug feeling the weight of my larger projects, like blankets, have as they rest in my lap when the weather cools. Maybe I love fall most of all because it gives me an excuse to knit more!
So many favorites, but I guess what I like best is baking. I usually take a hiatus in the dog days of summer where the idea of turning on the oven is torture just to think about, but in autumn I relish the warmth. Thanks for an awesome giveaway, and thanks for featuring my apron the other day!
Rhinebeck! And now the new Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival. I love it when the evening is earlier but it is still warm enough to go out for an evening walk in the dusk. And starting to plan my projects for the long dark winter evenings and snowy weekends.
My favourite thing about fall… Hot tea in my fav hoodie with the windows still open even though they should have been shut days before. And well, sweater knitting of course.
My favorite thing about fall is continuing the tradition of visiting every farm stand in a 50 mile radius of our farm with my sons. We make a point of buying at least one thing from every place in order to support our local farmers. There are about 15 farm stands/orchards/fruit farms/country stores/pumpkin patches, etc. on our route. We started the tradition when my sons were 5 and 7. They are 23 and soon to be 25 now – and we still do this! Tim and Chris both say, it would not be fall without our annual road trip.
I love pretty much everything about fall but my very favorite is stepping on acorns. The pop and crackle is so satisfying, and I have loved it since childhood…
I love those days where the sun is warm and the air is cool, with a little bit of haze off the ocean in the morning. And of course trying as many different varieties of locally grown apples as possible!
My favorite thing about fall is the crisp air and getting to break out the light jackets and hats and other wonderful hand knits.
Ah yes, autunno! . . . my favorite season for so many reasons. . . incredible sometimes eery clouds behind dazzling explosions of goldens, crimsons, greens, oranges. . . the chill in the air. . . the stews, soups, cheeses, breads, apples, gourds, pies, Chatham’s pumpkin donuts and every imaginable caloric foods forbidden during the svelte summer season. Now, we must “layer” against the cold to come! Fall is also when my Nonna and Ma used to put up the harvest–rich memories of mason jars everywhere. Time to make the vino, too! If I win, I’ll knit all winter surrounded by kids and cats.
Fresh apples.
my favorite thing is all the warm, cozy, orangey FOODS! pumpkin bread, squash soup, apple crisp, roasted beets and yams… yum! and crocheting by the woodstove with a hot mug of tea ;n)
the cool/almost chilly weather that’s good for sweaters, blankets and cuddling!
My favorite part of the fall is the way the morning air smells. crisp, clean and something I can’t quite put my finger on.
Ooh, I love fall. I love the colors, apples, the crisp air, snuggly sweaters, curling up in a blanket with a mug of hot cider. In fact, I’m off to pick up some apples from the orchard right now. Did I mention that I love fall?
I love the coziness of a day spent at home knitting and tooling around while rain falls on the streets outside, sipping a cup of tea or coffee, cuddling in blankets.
Pumpkins! I love the way they look and feel and taste and smell. It’s even fun to say “pumpkin.” I love all of the pumpkin recipes that have been cropping up in recent years. I love me some pumpkin treats!
My favorite thing about fall is… Caramel Apples!!!
We’ve got a beautiful fall day here in Arkansas too. It’s sunny but cool and breezy. My favorite thing about fall is the same as many others have said: finally being able to wear sweaters again (and the 100% angora hat that I knit back when it was 100+ degrees) I also love all the pioneer/homestead type festivals that happen around here this time of year.
Peaches! They’re just finishing up and once we get a cold snap the apples turn sweet. There’s also snow starting to cap the mountains and it’s a great time to get out the sweater that’s been in the UFO pile all summer and finish it before it’s really cold!
Mmm, pulling out and washing the winter woolens. I love the smell of the wool wash, the wet wool, the wooden drying rack over the heating vent…
Yes, I’m _that_ weird.
Fall – the smells, the colors, the sounds of the geese as they gear up for flying south, the chill in the air, all share in my favorite thing of Fall…the sun casting a wonderful golden light on all the can be touched by it’s warmth! Golden, wonderful fall!
What do I love about fall? Pumpkin pie, caramel apples, pumpkins, red/gold/orange maples leaves, crispness in the air, spice muffins, roast potatoes, and most importantly, lots and lot of woolly sweaters.
I love apples. Tart, sweet, crisp, delicious smelling apples. For eating, for baking, for putting in canned goods.
Cooking is my favourite thing about fall. Or maybe baking. Or maybe both. Finally I can turn on the oven and make cakes and pies and casseroles and stews and fill the house with awesome autum smells. In Southern Ontario we are finally getting all the fall vegetables in so there’s lots of squash to bake and potatoes to mash and onions to saute. My herbs are drying and everything just tastes so much better knowing that it came from close by. My mouth is watering just thinking about it all.
The quality of the light.
I’m a photographer, and the New England light in autumn is irresistible.
There are lots of things to like… the color of the turning leaves, the smell of woodsmoke in the air, the taste of pumpkin spice lattes at the coffe shop next door…
But the thing I love most about Fall is that it’s when various members of my family come to visit.
My sister will be here this evening so that we can go to a local fiber festival this weekend. And my parents will be here in two weeks to visit a bit before heading south… away from the colorful leaves, woodsmoke and spiced pumpkin lattes.
There are so many things…. homemade soup, gorgeous fall colors, apple cider and donuts, cozy sweaters, fabulous fall produce, cooler running weather, the list could go on and on…..
Soup! Absolutely soup!
My favorite thing about fall is the crisp cool air, hot tea at night and the state fair comes to town. The first cool, crisp night and I’m already aching for grilled corn, turkey legs and fried cheese nuggets.
Also, I get to start wearing all my cute sweaters.
The best part about Fall is the fact that Halloween is here. I take that as an opportunity to make my ONE big meal for the entire family before Beggar’s Night commences. Wassail is a fall staple, as is the delight of knitting with wool, candy corn and a cozy night with my husband.
I’m not very tolerant of cold weather, so my favorite thing this time of year is the shift in wardrobes. I try to focus on how all the wools and tweeds and heavy knits are going to keep me warm. It helps that I much prefer a fall palette to a summer one. Hello, gold and brown and olive green!
Hmmmm, there are so many things…
Fresh apple crisp
Football
Red leaves
Warm blankets
Pumpkin anything
and most of all, comfortable knitting.
I love the smells of fall. I don’t know if it’s the combination of the cooler air or what, but there is nothing like it!
I love the crisp air, and the smell. The leaves all crunchy and crinkly, the glorious colors. I love hot apple cider and pumpkin pie. I’m taking a special trip back up north this fall to see the leaves, get the cider and smell that smell. We don’t have that much in Texas. Fall is for a week, sometime in December here in Austin.
Ohhh Fall is when my birthday happens! Right in mid-october, when we have those few warmer sunnier days… the last hurrah before winter comes and settles over everything. Those days, and a little cider are my favorite part of the season!
My favorite thing is watching the leaves turn. This is my favorite time to be out in the woods!
Ooooooooooo
My Favorite thing about Fall? The leaves changing.
When I moved to Western Mass (from Eastern Mass) I realized just how important they are to me. I felt very far away from home looking at the colors of WM trees. They had the typical New England colors – tan, brown, and more brown. In EM, the colors tend towards the more vibrant! I love the red and orange leaves. They feel like home. They feel exciting and comforting all at once. I love driving along the highway with trees and valleys and hills all around and seeing the whole thing changing colors.
My favorite thing about fall is the crisp air in the morning. It makes you feel alive!
I love fall, so it is hard to pick just one thing. But I think the colors of the leaves…
Oh! Oh! What don’t I love about fall?! I was just telling EVERYONE It’s the bestest month of the year! The crunch of the leaves, the smells of a freshly lit fire, a snugly blanket made with love,AND a hot, perfect, cup of tea.
Rhinebeck. Enough said!
My family tends not to bake during the summer (the house heats up too much too quickly), so as soon as the weather turns crisp and cool, I get to go on a baking frenzy. This weekend, it’s apple galette!
Fall is the time when I can finally use the heavy wool blankets that hide in the closet over the summer. I love sleeping and hiding and lazing in bed under the weight of wool blankets.
It’s our first autumn in siciuly. Chestnut trees everywhere, for which I’m profoundly grateful. I’ve always associated hot flame-roasted chestnuts with Christmas Markts and snowy weather, but here we have the trees growing right next to date-palms! But – here on the higher elevations of My Etna, the active volcano on which I live, it will soon be cold enough to roast those chestnuts over the fire! :9 And of course, to knit warm woolies from MVFF!!
The gentle low lying mist that hangs over fields and meadows early in the morning – it reminds me that the year doesn’t end with the summer.
What I like about fall is the feeling that I can wear my favorite sweaters.
What I _don’t_ like about fall is that the worst stuff that ever happened to me, happened in the fall, and I can’t forget it.
I’d love to win some yarn in the fall!
My favorite thing about fall is the light.
My favourite thing about fall is pulling out my snuggly woolly sweaters and blankies and socks — especially the hand-knit ones!
My favorite thing about fall is the colors. Looks like God painted a beautiful picture.
Since I have moved to Texas, I miss the smell of fireplaces and woodburning stoves in the crisp autumn air. And biting into a crisp apple right off the tree. And all of the magnificent foliage colors.
FALL.. what isn’t there to like?? Crisp days/nights, apples, pumpkins, clambakes, oh my! My favorite thing is, however, that It is time to start making my grandmothers toffee that everyone absolutely loves!
My favorite thing about fall are the seven towering maples that are outside our new (to us) farm house. They’re changing colors and are all different: some red, some yellow, some orange. They inspire me to get out my dye pots!
The crunchies! I love the leaves crunching and the colors! And the smell of leaves. And the weather. Oh I love the weather! It’s scarves and hats with out it being so cold you have to bundle up like a 5 year old.
From my house on the top of the hill I begin to see more and more of Naragansett bay ( something that the summers leafy trees obscure from me) while I nurse my hot coffee and wrap up in my cardigans…Fall is cardigan weather. ( sigh : ) )
It would be hard to limit my favorite things about fall to just one thing, so I will use the ‘random selector’ in my brain and choose one: I get to enjoy one of my favorite things all month long during my birthday month … fresh PUMPKIN pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin soup, pumpkin candles, pumpkins in the fields ….
My favorite thing about fall is that I want to be outside again! In fact, I’m working outside now. Summer here in TX, as you well know, can be quite hellish, and I find myself counting down the days until October gets here. Fortunately, this year September was rather unseasonably mild too, so we’ve had an extra month of fall
Being outside, working in my garden, harvesting the fruits that have survived the heat, watching most of my plants perk back up after the long, depressing heat, listening to the bees, watching the birds stock up, playing with my daughter in the golden afternoons. This is pure heaven.
I love that you do things like this! It’s the sweetest ever!
Getting to take all of my knits out of storage and wearing them again.
Crispness of the Fall air prepares me for change and makes me happy. Cooler mornings energize the day, and one can get many things done to prepare for the cold of Winter. Happy Autumn!
My favorite thing about fall ~ besides football ~ is watching the farmers harvest the corn & soybean fields around us! It’s amazing the big machinery they use and how fast it’s done!
My favorite thing about fall is the availability of the Honeycrisp apples. They are my favorite and are only available in the fall.
Going apple picking at Mill’s Apple orchard outside Grantfork, IL. They have the best Fuji apples; also lots of friendly farm cats.
My favorite thing about fall has to be the sensory overload of everything beautiful and delicious. The leaves, cinnamon, apples, pumpkins….being able to see and taste the wonderfulness of it all!
I don’t know that I can pick one thing I love best about fall. The leaves, the colours, the smells, the burrowing in and getting cozy. Lately though, I’ve been most smitten with the light at this time of year. Those days when the clouds are dark, but the sun is bright, and the world just seems to be lit up from the inside.
Favorite thing about autumn – my anniversary. We’ll be married two years next week, but I love that we picked the fall since we both enjoy the season so much!
My favorite thing about autumn is the motivation to get a ton of things all at once. So far I’ve finished a ton of knitting, cleaned the house, and taken some time to figure out what to do this winter. Love the crisp weather. Happy fall!
The smell of Concord grapes on the vine, apple cider and wet fallen leaves in the grass.
oh, oh! Pick me! Fall is my favorite time of year, so it’s hard to pick one thing. I guess I will say the colder weather…it’s nice being inside and getting warm. And apple cider…and corn mazes…and….I could go on!
I can hardly count the things I love about fall, my favorite season. Of course getting all the wooly items out for use ranks at the top. But also have an unnatural love for acorns and can never wait to go walking and gathering them. Apples, cider, fall colors, making applebutter and sauce, pies…mmmm the smell of fall!
I’d say the best thing about autumn is my birthday in September!
No, my thing is American apple cider, which we can’t get here and just screams autumn to me. My mother used to make doughnuts and serve hot apple cider on Halloween…people would stop halfway through their ToT’ing to warm up in the house, have hot doughnuts and chat for a few minutes. I have a dream to do that here, but I can’t make wheat-free vegan doughnuts
. Apple cider, and that amazing smell from the leaves on the ground. I can’t separate out the two, they’re intertwined in my memories, I guess another Halloween thing. But I do love autumn.
Thanks for the giveaway, it’s fantabulous!
oooh, I love surprises!! I love cool, crisp days; the buzzing of late summer insects; the changing of the leaves; the ripe and tasty pears; the colors, shapes, and sizes of pumpkins; hearty soups and warm meals!
Apple Pie, nothing says fall like apple pie. It never tastes as good as the first pie of the fall.
My favorite thing about fall would have to be the crisp, cool air and beautiful colors. It is a season for the senses!
Warm woolen knitted things that I now get to wear with a chill in the air.
Ohh, so many nice things about fall! A big pot of chili on a colder evening….. running through the fallen leaves with my 2 daughters and our Basset Hound…. helping my daughter set up a ‘home’ for the many caterpillars she finds, so we can watch them transform… oh, and not looking forward to raking those leaves we love to run through
Ah, fall!
If I were still in New Mexico, my favourite thing about fall would be the crisp breeze and the hot air balloons and the constant smell of roasting chili peppers.
Here in Washington State? Its the return of the rain and the color changing leaves… and the instinctual return to the wool and needles that lets up some during the warmer summer months!
Apple pie with fresh raw whipped cream.
My favorite thing about fall is how the air smells — like dusk, burning leaves, wood fires, and damp ground all mixed into one. I love it.
I love fall (or autumn as we call it here..) because I love being able to wear my cosy knits and snuggle up on the sofa with D in front of an open fire….it doesn’t get any better than that !
I moved five years ago to live in Marseilles by the south seaside in France to follow my husband. This region is wonderful, but when fall comes here, it looks like anything but fall : most trees in the landscape by the seaside are pines. And at this time of the year I dearly miss the forests of chestnut trees from where I come : the long walks with fallen leaves crushing under your feet, the bag at your hand quickly full of chestnuts, and the promise of a hot chocolate back at home !
My favorite thing about fall is the crisp chill in the air that makes you remember the wonderful thing about fires in fireplaces and hot apple cider.
One thing? You ask me to pick my one favorite thing about fall.
Clearly, this is impossible, so here’s a sort list for you instead ^-^.
Cozy sweaters, cooler weather, fall festivals, Halloween, Honeycrisp apples, taffy apples, pumpkin pie, and my birthday is in October. Fall is my favorite season by far.
My favorite thing about fall is over here in California pie is not as well treasured as it is in other parts of the country, so if you bake one a month all year people think you a bit strange. In the fall, people forget your strange and welcome pie to every gathering. I get to bake pie unabashedly September through December!
I love the crisp air and brilliant blue skies. The fiery colors of oranges, browns, rusts, yellows. I love wearing sweaters and turtlenecks.
I love that my anniversary is in October and that Deb’s birthday is in November.
I love saying one of my favorite words…autumnal.
And although I don’t see it every year, I love the Vineyard in the fall.
my favorite thing about fall is crunching through the dry leaves when I walk. I love it when they pile up by the curb, and possibly have too much fun marching through them making as much noise as possible.
My favorite thing about fall: crispness! crisp air, crisp apples, crisp sheets of paper sent home from school, everything is fresh and crispy
The smell. Definitely, the smell. (And apple cider, which tastes much better in the fall.)
Fall is my favorite season. The fall leaf-changing colors in New England, the smell of home fires burning, leaves crunching underfoot, that slight but definite chill in the air, fall spices and pumpkins! Really what’s not like about fall?
I love the way fall smells – everything, ageing vegitation, cool dampness in the air, the first fireplace smoke, warm things cooking that require lengthy cooking times, there is just such a special quality in the air, you know things are changing.
My favorite thing about autumn is evening walks. My mom loved to walk and I grew up roaming the local woods with her. Now my husband and I walk our neighborhood after dark, enjoying the smell of wood smoke and damp leaves, listening to the night sounds of prowling critters and snatches of TV noise from the houses, sipping the hot chocolate we bring along. We do a lot of our ‘relationship’ talking on those walks…
My favorite thing about fall is all the changes it bring, the rain, the cold, the falling leaves. Going back to school, Halloween, baking pies and cakes and fun treats. Planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas. There’s just so much to look forward to.
Living in San Francisco, autumn is actually our summer and a break from near constant fog. So you could say the heat and sunshine is my favorite thing about fall!
My favorite thing about fall is to start baking more! When it’s cool in the mornings, it’s nice to turn the oven on and eat warm, toasty things made with love!
And of course, I get more knitting down in the cool weather!!
Favorite thing about fall: Having a pot of homemade chili on the stove when you come in from the cold.
The light changes in the fall. It is more intense. And the shadows are longer. I love the changing light and the consequent change in intensity of the colors in nature.
My favorite thing about fall is the crisp morning air, the beginnings of hoar frost every morning and pumpkins!! I’m already itchy to carve some jack o’ lanterns!
the rustle of the leaves and the memories of the sunday papers and football with a long lost love are my favorite things about the fall…
I am a rug hooker. About fifteen years ago, my mother and I found a beautiful orange wool coat at a rummage sale. On the way home, we decided that a rug of leaves was this coat’s destiny. So we stopped along the way and picked up maple and oak leaves. I copied on a xerox machine and these became the templates for the pattern I drew. Now that my mom has passed away, that autumn leaf rug is my favorite thing about fall. Every year I take it out from under my bed and hang it on my wall and remember my mom and all the happy times like that leaf hunt that we shared together as friends.
I love the light in the late afternoon as I work in my allotment, and the smell from the earth as I dig the last produce up.
Nothing beats the joy of going to the local orchard. I love waiting for each of my favorite pear and apple varieties to be in season. I can’t wait for Roxbury Russets!
My favorite thing is digging out the flannel sheets and then sleeping with the windows just a bit open…..also, knitting new mittens to replace those lost to the preschool playground elves.
My favorite thing about fall – is everything!! My birthday, wool festivals, fall festivals, the wool tour, beautiful foliage, crisp air, apples, pumpkins, hot cider, wearing sweaters, Halloween, using the wood stove on the first really cold night, no bugs …..
I love fall, the cool mornings, the crisp air, and the blue, blue skies. I love all the wonderful colors of fall from the leaves to the golden rod.
My favorite thing about fall? The leaves. Sometimes they’re all these amazing jewels set against a cerulean sky. Other times, the graduated colors make trees look as if they’ve been lit from within! And this year, the assortment of bright hues on my still green lawn has me longing for a pair of stranded fingerless gloves…using all those colors! I love walking thru leaves, even raking them into big piles. And once they’re all gone, it’s time to wait for spring, when the first early leaves pop…small as a fingernail, still wrinkled and delicate…and the most wonderful, delicate green..!
My favorite thing about fall is Trick-or-Treating on Halloween!
Fall means beautiful leaves, apples, apple pie, apple cider (mmmm) and time to get out those lovely knitwear sweaters!!
Fav thing about fall- the feeling of new beginnings. More than the new year, or the spring, fall calls me to clean out and start over and begin again.
Do I have to pick just one? Apples, colorful leaves on the trees (we won’t speak of what happens when they fall to the ground), snuggling on the chilly evenings, the way the light changes as the days get shorter, easing the sweaters and wool socks back into the wardrobe, I could go on and on. Thank you for sharing!
Fall for me means clean, crisp air. Beautiful colors. Great hiking weather. And a sense of calm after the frenzy of Summer. Curling up under a soft blanket and picking up the knitting that is too hot to work on in Summer.
The day they turn on the heat in my apartment building!
Easy – relief from the blistering hot Texas heat. Long shadows, hot cider and sweaters. The State Fair. Back to outdoor activities. Knitting wool till my fingers drop off. Frisky alpacas and sheep. Popcorn and football games. I could go on…
Snuggling up in a sweater while stirring a fragrant, bubbly, pot of soup and cheering for my football team!
cool nights sleeping under the down comforter with the baby dog curled up beside me
This is such an easy question! Hiking in the Hudson Valley! The views are breathtaking and the feeling is invigorating! My fav hiking spot is a mountain called Anthony’s Nose right at the Bear Mountain Bridge!
Perhaps I spent too many years in school, but to me fall is a new begining — and I love that. Rather than the new calendar year, I always feel like fall is the time to come up with some new goals, finish up some old ones (hopefully) and to just start anew. The best part is starting some new wintery projects, i.e. things I can do while sitting on the couch.
My favorite thing about fall is anything that has to do with pumkins. I love that Starbucks brings back the pumpkin latte. Pumpkin carving, pumpkin patches, pancakes, cookies, ice cream, home decorations, candles, etc… The color and the aroma just bring back that lovely home feeling for me. And mind you I live in sunny Southern California. Oh, and let’s not forget about the apple cider. I missed out on the apple picking when I lived in New York. But my friend is having her first child this November so maybe when he is 1 or 2 I’ll plan a trip to NY to go apple picking.
Although I have been out of school a while. I like that back to school feeling of the fall. I like fall fashions and my birthday is in the fall.
My favorite thing is the leaves turning color on the trees.
hi Susan, How cool of you to offer another gift to the human flock.
What I appreciate about fall is the joy of savoring what might turn out to be the last of the calm, warm, beautiful afternoons with a walk on Lobsterville beach–among all those derby anglers.
The best part of fall is anticipating the cozy and fun family events that will occur!
My favorite thing about fall…the colors. There is nothing like the colors of the leaves changing, those bright oranges and golds and burnt reds. Then those colors get carried into the mums and the pumpkins and the different squash.
Ahhh I love fall. Can’t wait to see those colors on the drive from NYC to Rhinebeck either.
There are a few things about the fall season that I love … putting on handknit socks, sweaters and the aroma of cookies baking in the oven!
Red leaves and crisp air. I’m from PA but now live in CO where the leaves are mostly the yellow of Aspens. I miss the Maples and Oaks.
My favorite thing about fall is wearing the sweaters I have been working on all year. and Rhinebeck… I can’t wait to go to Rhinebeck!
Holy bananas, lookit all the comments!
I think my favorite thing is getting to wear sweaters and start feeling all cozy. I don’t really get that out here in San Diego, but I remember loving it!
The smell. Fall has this smell that is hard to describe, it’s crisp and cool and makes me think of apples and leaves.
Crisp Jonathan apples, tart cider, a bit of frost on the leaves as I walk the path home from the orchard….
My favorite thing about fall …WOOL! I can break out the wool sweaters, and sit happily knitting wool projects putting away cottons til next summer. And while I sit in my wool sweater or shawl, knitting away, I can look out on the hillside behind our house that is covered in all the glorious colors of fall.
The smells of the crisp air, pumpkins, leaves , wood smoke and apple pies baking!
My favorite thing about fall is that we finally get a break from the 90 degree/90 percent humidity that plagues us from early May until the weather starts cooling down in Oct. Even then the thermometer sometimes edges into the upper 80’s! But cooler weather is on the way. Another favorite thing about fall is that’s when the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair (SAFF) takes place in Asheville, NC and this year I get to go to it for the very first time and wallow in all things fibery!
I love Fall, to pick just one reason is hard for me as I enjoy so many things! I love the colours, I love the festivals, I love the crispness in the air, and the excitement of change. New book, and new pencils, new patterns of scarfs and sweaters and comfy woollen slippers. Fireside chats and long walks in the woods. The only thing I think I dislike about fall is the fact that it means winter is next.
My birthday is the first day of fall.
Everything. I love the weather, even when it rains for days. On a good day, I love the way the changing trees look against the sky. On a bad day, I love the snuggle-up and stay inside feeling. I love the harvesting activity all around us, with apples and grapes coming in and fresh cider and donuts (although technically not a harvest item!). But mostly, I still love that back-to-school feeling: a new year and a fresh start.
The colors of the leaves on the trees against the blue sky and white clouds. Aesthetic perfection here in the Hudson Valley.
Mmm, Fall… I love the quickening of the energy, that mysterious urge to finish things up before Winter, gather in the rest of my acorns and marvel at Nature’s irrepressible gaudy Autumn Beauty while I am doing so. You know, sights like this: http://www.wakingthebones.com/2008/09/autumn-jewels.html
Whats not to like about fall! It signals the end of summer and promise of another snowy winter in New Hampshire! Time for serious knitting and felting.
I love fall. When we got married my one stipulation was that we set the date for fall! We were married October 27th, 1990. We’re still going strong!
Not sweating as soon as I start mowing!!
Being a desert denizen my favorite day of the years is when I get dressed for the day in jeans and a short sleeved shirt knowing that the day will be warm, but when I run out the door to go to school I stop and give a small shiver and dash back inside to grab a sweater.
The fall brings the most amazing light to the afternoons. The rays are warm and golden making the greens of the (few) trees stand out in contrast to the the warm browns and reds of the mountains. The creosote look olive and alive. The shadows are deep and each crack, crevice and fold of the hills are clear and visible. This is always a confirmation that the white hot heat of the summer is leaving and that we will slowly cool into a more comfortable state.
My favorite thing about fall is definitely the cooler weather. It really gets me in the mood for winter knitting.
This is a really easy one for me. The changing of the leaves from green to colors! It’s such a nice sight seeing the waves of trees in their various shades of red/orange/yellow/brown/green, and sometimes ones in between (I saw a purple one one year!).
My favorite thing about fall: the light. it’s all about the light and the ability to start wearing jackets and sweaters!
My favourite thing about fall is pumpkin pie! With whipped cream. Yum.
My favorite thing about fall….the golden light of a perfect autumn afternoon.
Cyndi
PS.love your blog, love the goats, love the sheep, love you guys. Thanks for all you do.
I grew up on the east coast and autumn always meant the changing leaves and the beauty of it, of course. But what I really loved was jumping into the leaf piles with my brother while we were supposed to be raking them up. Now that I live in the southwest where seasons and changing leaves don’t really happen, I love when the air begins to turn a little chilly and crisp because, in those moments, I’m reminded, if only for a moment, of my childhood and the fun we used to have. It always makes me smile.
I would have to say the State Fair. One last time to get together with friends or family and be outside.
While enjoying each other’s company, there is fried food to eat, bands preforming music and more. Walking through the fair grounds and laughing, there are chances to see the newest products available. Watching the shearing of sheep and alpacas or milking goats, there is always something going on with farm animals.
Looking at the beautiful items entered into competitions – whether it is knitting, quilting, lace, or something else. The talent and art work are enjoyable. As I look at these I say – one day I will be confident enough in my skills so I will enter the competition.
As the sun sets, the wind picks up. Summer is forgotten in minutes and the gentle but firm reminder of the cold wind hitting you is telling you Fall is here and Winter will be nipping at its doorstep.
My favorite thing about fall is walking through the leaves at dusk, wearing my quilted green vest, a scarf and fingerless gloves.
I love fall because of all the colors of the leaves, the harvest festivals, and knowing winter is right around the corner.
In the Midwest, where I grew up, it was the smell of the cedar chest as we got out the winter clothes, the snap in the air. Here in Southern California, it’s a little harder to decide, what with September being our hottest month, the fires, the Santa Ana winds. Maybe it’s the promise that October will (probably) bring cooler weather and with winter will come rain, it is to be hoped, and the season of landslides.
my favorite thing about fall – is the weather ! the crisp air in the morning and the coolness during the day and the chill in the evening better to wrap up on the sofa in a yummy wool blanket and knit
I think one of my favorite things about fall is that color that the sky turns right around 5, just after the sun has set (when I’m on my way home from work): it’s a dark, almost greenish blue, lightening to a paler color at the horizon and darkening to black as you ascend. It’s a luminous color and somehow the beauty of it makes it all right that the darkness is coming so soon.
Sleeping with the windows open, under a pile of quilts and cats.
My favorite thing about the fall is being able to watch the sun rise when I take the bus to work and set as I ride it home. Each day the sky and light are different, changing like the leaves on the trees. In other seasons, that is not as pronounced. One of these days I hope to knit a sweater that shows those shifting changes.
I love the crunchiness of everything in the autumn – the leave, the leaves in big piles, the sounds of trees bending in wind, even crunchy colors – vibrant skies and beautiful browns making their way to delight me!
I love the cool, damp, breezy feeling, the leaves changing color, and the smells. The smell of the cool, damp air, the rotting leaves… aah… taking the kids to the apple orchard, going on a hay ride. I love fall.
I love that with fall comes larger waves hitting the central california coast. Sure, the water is colder, but add a hood and booties to the usual wetsuit and you’re ready to go surfing.
I love pretty much everything about autumn. I love the color change in the leaves, the smell in the air, the crisp coolness that justifies wearing knitted woolens or layering for coziness without being too harshly frigid out. I love the harvest of produce and the variety of foods like pumpkin pie, cider, rutabaga/turnip, cranberries and other seasonal favorites available. I love stepping on crispy leaves as I walk my dog, the fact the mosquitoes are mostly gone for a while and I don’t have to swat them away constantly whenever I step out of the house and sleeping in under piles of toasty blankets.
Honeycrisp Apples from Allred’s Orchards
My favorite thing about fall is walking out into the yard, looking at the changing leaves that I will soon have to rake up, and smelling the scent of wood burning in my neighbor’s woodstove on the crisp, cool air.
I loving put away all my garden tools, pots, planters, stakes, bamboo deer chaser water fountain, hummingbird feeders, garden fairies and gnomes. Roses are wrapped, perennials mulched, plants divided and the garden prepared for winter. Leaf raking is ongoing until November and then my garden and yard are tidied up and waiting with great promise.
My favorite thing about fall is chilly days make me want to stay inside and knit, quilt or read a good book. Also, seeing the leaves turn.
Cool weather and warming up with sweaters and knitted goods.
How can you not love the change in colors?!? Things smell different, pumpkin pies made of fresh pumpkin, corn mazes, the harvest of vegetables from gardens waited for all summer. What’s not to love?
I love the crisp air, warm sweaters, and crocheting myself new hats and scarves and mittens…
I absolutely love crunching the dry leaves under my shoes. I go out of my way when I’m out walking to tramp on any leaves that look particularly dehydrated. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid and I never get tired of it.
Caramel apples and the cool crisp weather.
I love the spicy-sweet smell of fall air…it’s a combination of wood smoke, and apples, and leaves. Fall is my favorite season
I love the colors, the smell, the texture…fall is not about the ending of the growing season but a spectacular finish!
My favorite thing about fall is the spicy smell of the cottonwood tree in our yard. Of course I also love the crisp feel of the cooler air.
Okay, 2 things: sweater time, of course and a warm bed
Fall reminds me of my dad. When I was little in the Fall he let me help him unload the corn from the wagon and shovel it onto the elevator to go into the corn crib, to throw the wood into the wood shed as he sawed it into smaller pieces, to take up the potatoes from the potato patch, to help unload the silage for the cattle, to go along to the mill to get the feed for the animals, and to ride the tractor into the fields to watch him harvest the remaining crops. To me this was not work it was a way to be with my dad. I would scamper off the bus and hurry to change clothes so I could follow him around. I can still smell his pipe and the odor of his wool coat.
The leaves are turning now and the wind is blowing and although he was not around to watch my children grow up, they know of him by my memories. We use the tools and the traditions that he left behind and every now and then in the cool evenings in the Fall as the wind blows the leaves across the porch I can still smell his pipe, and I know he is still here with us.
There are so many things I love about fall….Apples, apple picking, the insane array of colors on the trees, the bright orange tree right outside my bedroom window, tea, crunchy leaves… I guess my most favorite is the crisp smell of fall evening/nighttime air.
My favorite thing about Fall is the fact that I get to dig out all of my sweaters again. Yea for cozy sweaters!
Fall is fantastic because the air is crisp, we get NO snow and the leaf colors are gorgeous in the northeast.
Fall is my favorite season for many reasons, but the smell of green chile roasting is one of the top ones.
My favorite thing about fall is the food. Endless apples in crisps and pies. And soups. I can justify spending time in the kitchen instead of outside.
My favourite thing about fall is hmm… It’s the whole feeling of promise in the air, that you know that there is good food coming into it’s prime, the apples are perfect, the leaves are falling, it just brings this promise of good things still to come before winter sets in.
I love the smells that surround the woods and my own back yard. It is great to be able to wear snuggly sweatshirts again and to be able to curl up on the couch with a favorite blanket and watch the leaves fall from the trees…my favorite season!
I love fall, it is my favorite season. The maple trees in my yard are turning orange and red, the weather is cool, there is a certain “fall” smell in the air, the grass no longer grows as fast so we don’t have to mow the yard twice a week! And yesterday was cold so I dug out a wool sweater ….yup, love fall.
Spring is my favorite season…but Fall is without a doubt the best time of the year out here in the SF Bay Area. The days are warm, sometimes hot (well, for us), and the nights are crisp and cool. There is a sense that soon it will be grey and damp again, but right now, it is warm and sweet.
And I love Halloween. Truly, madly, deeply LOVE Halloween. Halloween evening I start out as a middle aged woman, handing out candy…the madness hits, and soon I’m dressed in some witchy outfit, scaring the kiddies.
Autumn? What’s Autumn? We have hot/humid and cold/dry and precious little in the middle. I will never forget the first time I was in Pennsylvania in the fall; I nearly wrecked the car because the hills were so ALIVE with colour. We get lovely spring colour in Texas, but go from green to brown (or even just green to green) in the fall.
My favorite thing about fall – Halloween! The scary movie marathons, the running around at dusk through the cool crisp leaves, the candy, the kids deliberating for WEEKS over the perfect costume, I love it.
Sweaters, of course, and also the snappy freshness in the air on a blue sky day.
Yesterday morning, I walked my five year old son down the street to his bus stop. The air was crisp and cool, the trees were a lovely blend of greens and reds, and there were a few leaves scattered on the ground. We talked about building a giant leaf pile and jumping in it! And, for the first time this year, he was wearing the hat I made him over the summer. Its mornings like this that are my favorite thing about fall in New England.
My favorite thing about fall is my birthday!!
and the best part about having my birthday in the fall is that I can take walks in the fresh crisp air with my loved ones, see the leaves changing, and feel the wonderful fresh start that comes with this season (ie, “it’s fall and it’s time to get my sh*t together”)!
I love so many things about fall. But, many times i think all of my childhood was the season of “fall”. More than anything i am reminded of my parents in the fall: long saturday hikes, around-the-house projects, bluegrass music. Fall is a fabulous time.
My favourite thing about Fall is the way the light hits the trees on those incredibly crisp mornings when the sun is hung low in the sky and the branches are thick with goldening leaves.
I love the crispness in the air when fall hits. That first day, when you walk outside and realize, “I should have grabed a jacket.”
for me it is the cooler weather for sure. the summer time heat in texas is usually unbearable by august and when september rolls around we are willing it to drop even 5 degrees! once that happens, the trees instantly start dropping leaves and it’s just heaven!!
Favorite thing about autumn – the smells – the clean and new smell of the air – soup bubbling on the stove – apples – the piles of apples at the farmers market – apples baking with cinnamon and sugar in the oven – wool – the lavender and beeswax of my daughters’ kindergarten classroom…
I just received my yarn from the Spring 2009 shearing. It’s fabulous – It has subtly brought a deep, warm, pungent smell of your farm to my dining room. Lovely.
Yay! What a fun prize.
I love a lot of things about fall, the smell of the air, the changing colours, the sense of “new year” (in my employment, the calendar refreshes around this time of year)… but my favourite, favourite thing about fall is the FOOD! Harvest time!!!
My favorite thing about autumn? Oh, the wet cool smell of fallen leaves. Hands down. The scent is rich & earthy and speaks volumes to me about the cycle of the world.
despite the fact that we don’t really get the whole change of seasons thing (which I do love) here in SoCal, I do love the cooler weather, running in the dark in the morning, how much quieter and less crowded the beach is…
The colors! Not only do the flowers and plants have a vibrancy about them, but the light filters so softly first thing in the morning.
Can’t forget about the Harvest moon. It looks so close, one should be able to touch it.
All of this soothes my soul.
When the cooler temps make me a little forlorn (oh how I love summer too), I pick up my knitting and think about how I love wrapping myself and my loved ones in my hand knit items. Fall also means foods I love, country fairs, and RHINEBECK!!
Pumpkin bread and apple cider!
Pumpkins, mums, beautifully colored leaves and comfort food are among thr top reasons I love Fall.
The changing leaves!
Fall is my favorite season…because I get to start wearing wool! I love the crispness in the air, and apple picking, and making big pots of soup.
Fall is my favorite time to visit Martha’s Vineyard. I love the smell of the air, the feel of the air on my skin. Fall air, mmmmm.
i love the air in autumn–cool, damp, smelling of smoke and leaves.
I think my favorite thing about fall are the cool nights perfect for falling asleep under your covers, rather than miserably lying a top them drenched in sweat as summer nights are wont to due.
I also love wearing scarves in this weather. A lot.
Oh, I have two favourite things about fall. The first is that the temperature actually becomes moderate here in North Carolina.
The second is pumpkins! Pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie… even the pumpkin shakes some places offer.
I just love fall.
My favorite things about fall are the fresh feeling in the air, clear blue skies and the smell of leaves on the ground. The combination always reminds me of running cross country in high school.
Favorite fall fancies – hot toddies with cider and jack daniels – last rosebud blooms – migrating birds & butterflies – wet leafy walks in the woods – falling acorns-and the last dip in the atlantic ocean…
I think the best thing about fall is the coming back of fresh air. I coolness in the air is the best and all the different colors of the leaves on the trees are just breathtaking. It’s my very favorite time of the year.
Favorite thing about Fall? I have to choose a favorite? That’s hard….Hmmm. I love how pretty it is when the leaves turn color. I love that the weather gets a little bit cooler, so that I can spend time outside without melting. I also love being able to wear sweaters and knee-high boots.
I would love that, there’s little more comforting than camping in the couch with yarn and needles in a cold october evening…
Fall is such a great time of the year. I love seeing all the livestock (my own and on farms we drive past) up and about the pastures; I love the color of the leaves and most of all I love PUMPKIN MUFFINS & Halloween!!! Almost Pumpkin everything is delicious and Halloween is my wedding anniversary and my son’s birthday!
My favorite thing about Fall is the cool weather and snuggling to get warm. I live in So Cal and I hate the monotonous heat.
I love the chill in the air, the way the light slants through the sky and makes things glow, and most of all, wearing wool socks again. Delicious!
I like eating soup in the fall, also butternut squashes are finally around!
The crisp cool morning air that clears my mind allowing for a new season of thought to fill my body
To me, fall is the beginning! Oklahoma summers tend to wear me out..I don’t really like heat. So fall is when I really get excited. It’s the beginning of school..not for me, but I always get at least one new notebook or pencil case (good for dpns). Time to think about planting spring bulbs. The air is full of anticipation. And since I think I suffer from Laura Ingalls Wilder syndrome it’s time to stock up on everything from yarn to cat food. One would think I lived out in the Alaskan wilderness.
I think Vermont might be my favorite thing about fall. I’m lucky enough to live in VT and we have the ‘famed fall folliage’ on the green mountains, apple picking, apple cider, apple donuts, our sheep & wool fest, crisp fall air (cool enough to knit with wool and then wear what you knit right after you finish!)…
Favorite thing about fall? Cooler weather!!! After 5 months of broiling in the desert sun, I was outside all day today at a craft fair, just ecstatic that there was a little breeze, and I wasn’t going to pass out from the heat.
Now, if I was still living back east, I’d be taking walks in the newly fallen leaves, all different colors. I’d be going to Valley Green, a 100+ year old inn, outside of Philadelphia, with the Wissahickon river (creek) flowing, and watch the leaves falling through the air.
Watching my daughter collecting newly colored leaves…calling “Mom I have the perfect one for you”, over and over again. She is 4 and I’m 40, it is perfect!
Crisp air, fall colors, of course, but I absolutely love the smell of woodsmoke! It conjures that wonderful feeling of coziness after being outside in the cold.
I love the fresh apple cider that appears in the fall. I like to mix it with whiskey and a squeeze of lemon juice for a lovely fall evening cocktail.
My favorite thing about fall….Pumpkin, coloured leaves in the trees, scarecrows, turkeys, football, craft shows, the preparation of gifts for Christmas (hand made of course). And maybe because of all those years of starting school the promise of starting something new.
These are some of reasons I love fall..
there truly are so many things to love about fall. colorful leaves, apples, baking, knitting, snuggling. but my favorite thing is probably putting my hand knit hats on the heads of my girls. their is nothing cuter then warm wool hats on sweet girls sporting pink noses.
thanks for the wonderful give away!
My favorite thing about fall is…..the crispness in the air, Friday night football games, and Halloween.
I love Fall! It’s my favourite time of year, with the crispness in the air, the smells of leaves and earth and bonfires, the fresh autumn breeze blowing in, the smell of summer squash cooking into soup … and my favourite part, the vibrant colours of the leaves turning, a blaze of goldens, yellows & reds!
It’s hard to pick just one favorite thing about the fall. It’s my very favorite season. I love visiting the apple orchard for their delicious apple cider donuts. I love the briskness of the air, seeing the beautifully colored leaves as I drive a long the Rock River, and the way my animals suddenly become friskier as the weather gets cooler. And of course, as a knitter, I love the chance to break out the warm woolies I’ve been working on all year and putting them to good use.
Fall to me means the Renaissance Faire. I’ve worked at the Kansas City Faire in a booth for the past 9 years, and it’s so much a part of me, I don’t know what I’d do in fall without it! It opens Labor Day weekend, and runs for 7 weekends. I get tired of working 7 days a week for 7 weeks, but dressing up and interacting in character is so much fun! Besides, I have all this fabulous garb to wear! Today was great–cool enough to wear flannel bloomers under my skirts and a shawl all day, but not so cold to be miserable all day. Hopefully we’ll have the same thing tomorrow–but with a bit of sun please! And the last day of faire, I make a huge batch of my homemade Irish Cream liquor, and share with my friends out there. Yum!
I really love fall in general, when the weather starts to get just a bit cooler, and as much as I love having my kids home all summer having some days all to myself is also a treat. But I especially love the smell of fall and the crunching of leaves under my feet when I’m out walking.
Thanks for another giveaway Susie!

I love how the light becomes golden and softer.
My absolute favorite part of fall is the apple cider, and my family’s annual visit to the cider mill. Getting up at O’dark thirty, putting on the long johns and flannels for the first time and making the drive up to the cider mill early in the morning. Then coming home raking the leaves out of the yard and sitting down to a big mug full of hot cider. YUM!
My favorite thing about fall is when everyone gets together for all of the harvest festivals. The leaves are beautiful colors, the air is crisp ,and the cider is fresh and everyone takes a few days to enjoy all of the fruits and vegetables/ whatever is growing. And they get together with friends/ family/ neighbors and just have fun…plus eat some really great things! A few of us go and bake pies wiht some of the apples at a festival near by and then we sell them to help support local charities. I think it is really fun because heck who doesn’t love apple pie and it technically is for a good cause:o) Plus you get to knit more and wear more of your knit clothing!
Would it be bad if I said…my kids are back in school?
But to be nicer, I really like Halloween, seing all the kids all dressed up is always fun.
nature is so beautiful in the fall…I think that says it all.
I’m so happy for the winner of the goats! What a wonderful essay!
Please add my name to the hat for your yarn giveaway!
Because Fall is when we get to celebrate the lives of our children!
Here in CO the aspens are lovely, what what I like most is the night in fall that I go for a walk and can smell the fireplace wood smoke from the first fall fires. Heavenly!
My favorite thing about fall is the change in the air, it feels like a new beginning for me more than spring. Everyday while driving to work I am in awe of the beautiful colors of the leaves and the crispness of the air just like a crisp new apple just picked!! My most favorite thing of fall is my birthday on October 10 when I feel the love of my family and close friends!!
Fall is my favorite season, so having to pick one favorite thing about it is hard. I would have to say it is the smell of Autumn – the earth, the fallen leaves, the smoke from fireplace chimneys – all those wonderful scents that I love.
Liz (newsas on Rav)
My favorite thing about fall. There is many, being able to finally get out my mittens and hats, Fall bake goods, Hot tea on a crisp morning, just the fact of knowing that 90 degree days are long gone and it might snow this week. Ah. How I love fall!
I love cool, crisp afternoon walks in deep autumn, when the air smells like falling leaves and colors of gold and red are all around you. I suppose fall walks are my favorite because it is the time of year you can finally pull on a heavy, handknit sweater and not roast!
definitely the cool temps, the unbeatable colors, and the fresh fall smells!
On the way home from my great-grandmother’s funeral today, I said to my husband, “I used to hate Fall because it seems everything ends or dies then but now that I’m older I realize the beauty and circle of it and the way it is and admire that during Fall our world becomes God’s paintbox to color our world beautiful.” So, I guess I love how Fall is always unexpected to me, ever changing and showing we must rest in order to put forth in the Spring.
Oh the colors!!! Going for a walk when it’s cool enough to need a little jacket, and walking down a country road looking at the colors of the leaves.
I can not say it better than Helen Hunt Jackson in
“October’s Bright Blue Weather”
O Suns and skies and clouds of June,
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October’s bright blue weather
When the dry desert heat breaks and, seemingly overnight, it’s cool and blustery and the air seems charged…that’s my favorite thing about Fall here in the Las Vegas valley…
fall just smells good! beautiful running weather & a chance to cuddle up in a favorite blanket on the couch in the evenings. mmm
I think I’m entering this comment too late, but that’s okay. Favorite thing about fall… winter squashes!
It is hard to pick just one favorite thing about the BEST Season and I’m sure glad I live in VA where we have all 4 glorious seasons, but Fall is my favorite. The weather turns cool and the air smells, well, like Fall! I would have to say my favorite thing is the days in fall, especially on the weekends, where it is a really perfect weather day, so EVERYONE wants to be outside. You know, its warm, not hot, sunny with clear skies, but still smells like fall. Whole families and thier friends just needing to enjoy the outdoors and spend time together before the winter sets in. Not to hot for some yardwork, good weather to get in another cookout, everyone in the neighborhood is out for a walk and/or it’s time to head to a local craft show. I LOVE these days!
