-First my favorite moving quote- "Friends help you move, Real friends help you move dead bodies."
-Best part: finding out who your friend are.
-Worst part: Being confronted with the consequences of consumerism and personal packrattedness.

So, sadly, I only just saw this, and the giveaway is over, but I thought I would share my horrible moving story, to make you feel better, I hope. I moved out of my parents' house when I was 18. They had no knowledge that I was moving out, although my relationship with my parents and why I left is a different story altogether. I was moving 80 miles away, so I rented a storage facility a half mile away from my house, so that I could get things out of my parents' house in case I needed to leave quickly. I didn't have a license (not allowed) so I had to carry all of my belongings to this storage facility. I also couldn't buy any boxes, because that would be suspicious, so I used bags. Tote bags, plastic bags, duffel bags - anything I could find in my room. It took me a week to move all of my things. I hope never to do that again, as you never actually realize how much stuff you have, and how much it *weighs* until you have to carry it in your hands, across your back, on your wrists, and the inside of your elbows for half an hour. Yes, I know half an hour is really slow for only going half a mile, but let me tell you, you can't move that fast. Add to it that it was August, hot and humid, and it is no party. The worst was carrying my books in bags. I own well over 130 books. Big books. I have scars from the blisters I got moving all of my stuff. So, no matter how horrible moving seems to be, just be happy you don't have to carry it :)

After 21 years in the military we have had our share of moves. The biggest lesson we learned was to leave the move to the professional movers. Our worst move was definitly the one we did ourselves.

My favorite motto for packing and moving... If in doubt throw it out.

Although I hate packing more than anything. Moving is a good time to re-evaluate and unload all that 'stuff; you hang on to but really don't need.

2 worsts: #1 The warm up story - Having the professional packers pack the 1/4 pound stick of butter in with your bedspread when moving from Florida in the summer. #2 Having the moving van slide off of the road and over the cliff while filled with your belongings. Then not wanting to pay for the damage because - insert many ridiculous reasons here.

The best: The beautiful drive and delightful company on the trip from point A to point B on many a move. Adventure and anticipation can be terrific.

Ten minutes to go until the deadline! EEEK!

Worst move: NY to Austin, TX for a year's sabbatic, with an almost-4-yr-old who decided to get projectile-vomit stomach flu on the 4-day drive down. Many, many rolls of paper towels were our major defense against total YUCK. Poor kid, poor parents.

Best move: None? And I've moved 25 times in 53 years. They were all awful, but survivable, in one way or another.

nothing like finding out at the last minute,,,
the best thing about moving- starting over. we all need this one time or another and where else in life do you get a completely clean slate with out someone remembering what you did last time this opportunity came about. When you move everyone is just excited for you and can't wait to see what wonderfulness you will pull off!!
The worst thing about moving- is MOVING! no, really- there is so much work packed into such a small amount of time. An entire house (or apartment) to be dismantled, packed, labeled and moved unpacked and rearranged in usually 2 or 3 days time.. That is anyone;s nightmare.
Hope that helps! Now to plan how to spin all that fiber! LOL

discovered your blog and love it. i'm checking in regularly 'cause we'd really love goats to go along with the bees and chickens.

moving - i think, overall, i wouldn't categorize it in my fun column. however, i do enjoy packing and sorting if there's enough time to do it properly. getting rid of crap, organizing. love it. unpacking is the same - getting to consider and place things is fun. this all is changed if there isn't enough time. then it's a horror and stuff gets piled randomly into boxes that then sit around for a year waiting to be unpacked.

the best thing about a move is the new place.

worst experience? movers getting tipsy and deciding that the stuff in the storage unit was not of value. they then decided that it all needed to be just tossed into the back of the moving truck in one big heap. we won't say who the movers were... i ended up unloading the truck and reloading it because it was strenuously impressed upon me that there was absolutely no room left in the truck. since this made no sense to me, i opened the back of the truck and had a minor heart attack when i saw the disaster.

Best part is having the opportunity to go through things, get rid of old baggage, slim down . . .

Worst part of moving is having to go through things, getting rid of treasures, etc., etc.

You get the picture. Moving is a double-edged sword. But I do love the new, fresh beginnings, so the other stuff is worth it!

Best love to you and Erin. You're doing a Fab job!!
