Spinners Giveaway!

by Susan on October 7, 2009

Fee

Completely gratuitous shot of Feenat.

As promised, I’m having a giveaway just for the Spinners this week. Why? Because we love our spinners and we don’t do nearly enough to celebrate them!

One of you lucky ducks is going to win one full pound of our luscious, buttery 100% Cormo Combed Top AND one full pound of our absolutely lovely Kid Mohair/Cormo Blend Roving. That’s enough premium spinning fibers to keep you busy for a good, long time.

Here’s the deal: Leave a comment on this thread telling me the best and worst parts of moving. Why? Because I am in hell over here people, and I want to hear stories that are worse than mine.

But there’s one more thing you have to do- tell your spinning friends about this giveaway. I don’t care how you do; email, twitter, facebook, blog, post on ravelry or tell your guild, but somehow you need to let them know that Juniper Moon Farm is giving away a spinners stash.

Entries close at midnight EST, on Sunday, October 11th, 2009. One winner will be chosen at random and the winner will be posted here. The winner has 24 hours to claim his or her (but probably her) prize. Sound good?

Good luck!

oops! Moving? Thankfully it’s be awhile. But we had to stay in a roach ridden urine smelling hotel during one move. Another move, all my hubby’s comic books were stolen AND, all the mirrors ,curio cabinet, and even the couch were broke by movers!

Pat October 7, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Is it okay if a wannabe spinner tries for this? My sister bought me a beautiful spinning wheel at a garage sale outside of Richmond, Virginia, knowing that I want to try my hand at spinning. Between work, knitting, throwing pots and life, I haven’t taken the time to find someone to teach me how to use this beautiful piece.
My worst moving story – newly married, we moved from Connecticut to Illinois, and the wonderful moving van driver decided in Toledo, Ohio, that he didn’t care to work for that moving company anymore, and left the trailer with all our possessions in a truck stop. It took over a month for the orphan trailer to be noticed. Oh, to be young and in love and not care about sleeping in beds or eating off of real dishes.

Worst moving story: The day before we closed on our dream house we did our walk through and discovered that a skylight was leaking, leaving a huge puddle of water on the floor. And everything the had seller promised (in writing) to leave behind, from curtains and carpet to fireplace andirons and a BUILT IN bookcase had been removed by her kids. They also took the door knocker, leaving big ugly holes where the brass had been, and still – 5 years later, we can’t find one that fits properly to both fill and cover the holes. We had to decide just how much this house meant to us. We went forward with the sale and didn’t make a fuss, but did let the seller’s representative know we were disappointed. The next day after closing we returned to the house and got our BEST moving story.
The former owners had built this as their retirement home. She was a homemaker, he was a chemistry professor. Within ten years of building the house, he died of cancer in the room that’s now my office – short retirement indeed. She held onto this house, a widow alone, eventually suffering injuries that made it impossible to stay here any longer.
We walked into the house after the closing and found her rocking chair in front of the sliding glass door that looks out onto the deck, in the room her husband had died in, with very fresh muffin crumbs in the seat. We believe she’d come by to say goodbye to her life here and her husband. I cried, my husband got a little choked up, and we realized that the curtains, carpets, bookshelf and andirons meant nothing. Home and all it encompasses, on the other hand, mean everything.

Becca R October 7, 2009 at 7:22 pm

The best part? (is there really one?) I tend to enjoy unpacking my yarn and getting to fondle all of the wool I have.

The worst part? Everything else.

Piquita October 7, 2009 at 7:25 pm

Worst thing that ever happened to me when I moved was that someone stole my best bike EVER. It was a Raleigh 10-speed vintage upright handlebar. I paid $25 for it at a yard sale. I will never ever find a bike like that again. (I have many bikes.)

The best part of moving is the migration of all the thinghummies to the Bowl That’s In Every House — you know, the one with paper clips, random business cards, screws that have long since been separated from whatever they fell out of — and you get to throw the whole damn thing in the trash.

Janice in GA October 7, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Best part of moving: when friends and family chip in to help but YOU get to drive the big truck!

Worst part of moving: Unpacking. I’m terrible at finding places for things. :(

Vaedri October 7, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Best part is a fresh, clean start. New places to put things, new ways to organise.

But pretty much everything else kind of sucks.

Heather October 7, 2009 at 7:29 pm

My favorite move was to where I live now. Some of my friends came up and help me clean the house before we moved in and some helped us actually move stuff. It was special because it is the first house we owned. My worst move was when I had a hard time finding a place due to pets. That move came right down to the wire (not a fond memory at all).
It is so exciting starting in a new place though – Best wishes!

Roxanne H. October 7, 2009 at 7:37 pm

The best part of moving is the new adventure into the unknown! The smell of a new place and deciding where to put everything!
The worst part is broken memory’s such as your grandmother’s dishes and antique mirrors. Also, where to put everything! LOL

mariannem October 7, 2009 at 7:37 pm

The worst part: lugigng boxes of records. We have hundreds and hundreds of vinyl LPs and they are HEAVY.
The best part: setting up a new kitchen, everything in its new place.

Cindy October 7, 2009 at 7:42 pm

Moving? The worst part is definitely the packing…and packing…and then the unpacking….. Moving into a new place is exciting but not the actual process!

Robin in VA October 7, 2009 at 7:44 pm

The worst part about moving…I’m probably the worlds BIGGEST PACKRAT! I learned this from my grandmother (God bless her) but I can’t throw away anything that I think will come in handy later…
The best part about moving, well, it’s been 24 years since I last moved so I don’t know how to answer that except to say — a new house to “stash my stuff” in?!

Susan aka reddirt October 7, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Best part. Like others have said getting acquainted with a new area…finding the best places to eat/shop/new mechanic etc. It’s better now with things like Angie’s List to help with repairmen and such. And for me it’s getting rid of stuff. There have been times when I packed stuff that I thought I wanted/needed. And then after the tiresomeness of unpacking, I’d get fed up and just trash stuff. Felt really good.

I don’t have a really BAD story, but once somehow all my shoes except a pair of flipflops got packed in an unmarked box. It was winter so once my cold feet got there, they stayed in the house for a couple of days until the shoes were unearthed. Got lots done though. My mama always said to pack a box labeled FIRST BOX and carry it with you. Inside…toilet paper, coffee pot and coffee, clean underwear and a change of clothes, towel and washcloth, and your special blanket and pillow. Now I’d probably add my knitting and a spindle..oh and the top and roving I might win :-)

Kirsten October 7, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Reminds me of the move my guy and I made to our current apartment. It was the middle of the week – our new landlord wasn’t giving us an inch and wouldn’t let us move in over the weekend prior. And both of us came down with the WORST stomach flu we’ve had since we were kids. First he got it, lying on the couch nearly dead as I tried to stuff all my yarn into bags in the days before moving. Then I got it. We were like helpless, puking, little birds. We ended up calling his ever-gracious mother to beg for help. She somehow managed to pack up the remaining unpacked half of our apartment and after about 20 car trips (windows DOWN) we got it moved. We had to take turns – one would take a box up the stairs while the other puked their guts out, then we switched. I don’t even know how we got this sofa up those winding flights of stairs. And then, at around 10, I did a top-to-bottom 409-ing, vacuuming, spackling and febreezing of the old place in between trips to the bathroom, which I cleaned last. I got that security deposit back, by George.

Jill H. October 7, 2009 at 7:49 pm

I HATE moving – it is disconcerting and up in the air and I feel all jumbled like all my homey stuff in scattered boxes. I have never moved far, but cried for months last time after a 5 mile move – I just hadn’t decided I hated my old house and wasn’t in love with my new house – yet.

The best part of moving is the mind set to get rid of stuff I haven’t touched in years and know I won’t need again (until 2 weeks after I have tossed it) and picking new interior paint – I LOVE to paint inside, but only when it is a new canvas. Once I am done, I tend to like it and live with it.

I will tell all the ladies at my spinning group tonight at our LYS Wooly Wonders about the give away.

Hugs, Kisses and Good Luck to you Juniper Moon.

Jenna S October 7, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Best part- Starting over, decorating, going to Target a bunch!

Worst- packing/unpacking with a toddler. So much frustration.

Denise October 7, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Here’s my story. This has brought back repressed memories. I will need to go back into therapy. Happened 15 years ago. Moved from 3 different locations. Massive ice storm flooded one location, where all paperwork was stored. Good bye receipts, hello IRS audit with no backing docs. Moving with lots of little trucks during ice storm and black ice. 1 truck totaled, my brother’s, street light pole won that battle. Finally moved enough stuff to make it livable, went out for wings and beer while filling waterbed. Return to find ice cold bed that looks like Mount Everest, lucky it didn’t explode. Slept on cold hard floor that night. I will never move again, ever.

Linda October 7, 2009 at 8:08 pm

The few times I moved, I always moved to a bigger and/or better place – so the best part of moving has always been trading up! The worst part – omg, it is the unpacking for sure. Packing is a pain, but it’s a cinch. UNpacking sends me to lie down for a while in a darkened room. Where to put everything? Once it has a home will I remember where that is? And how can I have leftover boxes full of stuff that has nowhere to go when this place is bigger than the last one???

Good luck with the move. Breaking something up is always hard, even when it’s for the best.

vampy October 7, 2009 at 8:14 pm

The best thing about moving is the clean slate, the opportunity to get all your stuff organised exactly how you want and to get rid of things you don’t really need.

The worst thing is well, all the logistics. My last move was from a rented flat to a house which i purchased, and the paperwork took longer than expected, so i had 2 weeks between having to move out of the flat, and being able to move into the house. Luckily the owners of the house let me store my stuff in the garage until the sale was completed, but it was pretty horrible because i had to sleep on my best friend’s floor for a fortnight, and i couldn’t go stay with my parents or other friends who had spare rooms because none of them were local, and i needed to be around so i could get to my solicitor and sign paperwork and stuff on short notice.

hang on in there, moving sucks, but it’s all worth it in the end when you’re in a nice new place!

Chrystee Governo October 7, 2009 at 8:14 pm

I moved from FL to RI when I was 19. I packed all my stuff up and sent it via UPS to my friend during the several months before I moved my body there. That part was easy. When I finally took the loooong train ride there, I sat next to a guy who got drunk in the dining car and during the night he progressively sat lower and lower in his seat until he had slid down so that his legs were on the floor (ick!) and his head was resting on my hip like it was a comfy pillow (ickier!) I pretended to stay asleep and moved a bit and thankfully he woke with a big, embarrassed, “OH!!!” It was freezing on the train and me having lived in FL for 3 years no longer owned a coat.

The good part – I met the guy who was to be my husband several months later. That was 15 years ago :)

karen duby October 7, 2009 at 8:16 pm

I love looking at your sheep. I used to have a small herd too. I just do hand spinning now and some dry felting ACEOs.

--Deb October 7, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart this week!

Worst part: Not just the packing (especially since we’ve lived in the same house for 34 years), but–worse–packing the BOOKS. Even weeding out about 1/4, I still have over 2000 books … that’s a lot of paper!

Best part? Um … wait … something will come to me. New start? Fresh beginning? Something like that…

Rebekah October 7, 2009 at 8:25 pm

For me, the best part about moving was being closer to my friends. The worst was moving on the hottest day of the year. :)

Sarah October 7, 2009 at 8:25 pm

We had an exciting cross country move many years ago, involving an un-airconditioned VW in the summer time. With our dwarf hamster, and several squirt guns. But that wasn’t the worst part. The worst part was two weeks later, after we’d moved into our “temporary” (read: for three months) studio apartment. That was the day that all of our stuff arrived (having just been moved out of our two bedroom house).

Wendy Hamilton October 7, 2009 at 8:29 pm

The worst part about our last move was having my husband fly to his new job every Monday morning at 3 AM for 9 months while I waited in another state trying to sell our home in a newly flat economy. I was a wreck worrying about him getting there and back safely through storms and I hated being apart.

Meghan October 7, 2009 at 8:31 pm

Best thing: finally find all those bits and bobs you have lost over the years. I always have a lot of those “ahhh, there it is!!” moments while packing.
Worst thing: unpacking the last box you pack. I call this box the “catch all” box. It’s all of that last crap you forgot to pack and just chucked into a box you have set up. I hate unpacking that thing because most of that stuff didn’t have a box because it didn’t have a good place to be kept period. In fact, we have been here 3 years and that box is living in my front closet still…ahh well!
Good luck!!! :)

Katherine Ruiz October 7, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Ooh! I am fixing to buy my first house and am warming up for the move. My favorite part of moving is honestly getting rid of stuff – evaluating your things and deciding if you love them enough to move them or not. I have a hard time getting rid of stuff under normal conditions, but something about moving really motivates me to declutter.
The worst thing about moving is unpacking and figuring out where everything goes. Ugh.

Lauren October 7, 2009 at 8:38 pm

oooh – I just got my first spinning wheel – what fun it would be to spin some of your gorgeous fiber!

The worst part of moving is PACKING. I’ve never done an easy move – the kind where you just load up the car and drive things over in your own time. I moved from Seattle to MA to go to boarding school when I was 14 and to NYC for university (and had to unpack and repack my dorm room every year) and a few times around the city but have always had to do it in one U-Haul load… and now I’m contemplating moving back to Seattle next June! At least I know all my belongings in my 235 square foot apartment fit into one small U-Haul truck!

The best part of moving? Well… I always like the new space and figuring out how to use it best (super important in 235 sq. feet!). It’s a fun challenge to me – many of my friends have my come over when they have to unpack so I can help them figure it out too!

Steph October 7, 2009 at 8:44 pm

The worst thing about moving is lugging the never ending boxes of books up and down stairs. The best thing about moving is decorating the new house, new paint, new curtains, a clean, fresh start.

Rebecca October 7, 2009 at 8:45 pm

As long as you don’t have lots of books, I say animals should be cake to move! Also make sure to have a roll of toilet paper and tooth brush in your purse or something so you can get to it as soon as you need them. Good luck!

jeannette October 7, 2009 at 8:54 pm

OH my I have moved so much its almost second nature LOL.. the worst for me is packing and unpacking oh and lugging boxes too and fro.. it got to the point that we would just live out of boxes because it was much easier!,.. the best part about moving is the adventure & fresh start you get to make :)

Tracy October 7, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Oy the worse thing about moving is the change of address. We’ve been here almost 4 years now and I still do not have all the mail sent to the right address. I suppose the fact that our country post office has also changed our address three times since we’ve been here doesn’t help. First we were a POBox then had a real street address, then we were a RR and now we as of last week we have yet another street address. ;o)

Best part of moving? Eventually you get sooo sick of packing things you cull the flotsam and jetsam and end up being better organized in your new place.

posting your contest to the IL group in Rav.

Tracy WW October 7, 2009 at 8:56 pm

The BEST part of moving is the fresh new start in a fresh new place. It’s best if you have time to get into your new place before the stuff arrives, so you can clean from top to bottom. My house is never so clean as it is when I first move in.

The WORST moving story I had was when I was moving from Austin, TX, to the Boston area. It was a company move–all paid for–so I thought it would be a piece of cake. The moving company sent two lovely women to carefully pack up all my things (wow). Afterward, they sent two men to move all my furniture and boxes onto the moving truck. However, one of the moving men HAD ONLY ONE ARM! Let’s just say I had to do a whole lot more moving than I had planned to…. :(

Andrea October 7, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Best Part: Throwing away years of accumulated stuff you never knew what to do with and starting over fresh — it feels like the start of a new school year. Worst Part: Figuring how you are going to live in your new house so you know where to put your things. Like, will I want my cups to the left of the sink or to the right. Takes weeks to figure this out!

turtle October 7, 2009 at 8:58 pm

will pass the word along!
Moving… something i know all too well, hubby having been a sailor for uncle sam for 15 years! In class afew years back we had to list jobs we had had along with places we had lived…. i was well into the 30′s on both lists, numerous states and country’s listed. Our last move(s) were from hawaii to wa state. Uncle sam wasn’t helping on this one. I actually finished work earlier than anticipated to get the home projects done to sell (i finished installing hardwood floors as one), and after 6 yard sales we only had belongings enough to fit into 42 beer box sized boxes for 3 people. (17 were my could not part with craft items). The cars were crated, the boxes were crated, the dog had her airline crate … we were off! This was only temporary though as we then lived with my in laws (and the grandparents…in a 1700 sq ft home) for 4 months. four generations and the golden retriever, it was a good experience though! Last week hubby came home and asked me how i really felt about canada… guess where we may be moving this coming feb or may! Another island! I truly hope to move no more than 3 times more in the remainder of my life to come. We’ll see. Good luck girls!

turtle October 7, 2009 at 9:03 pm

oh, and i didn’t even mention the stolen stereo equipment from a locked car, the car that was literally crushed (they dropped one of those big shipping crates off the cargo ship on it), poor little mg! The movers who stuffed baking dishes in the microwave so there were dangerous looking dents from the inside out, the mover who packed the full can of garbage, ewww 2 months later! I especially loved the suitcase that was brought into the hotel room during a long move that, well …… vibrated. Lets just say hubby had stuck certain items into his suitcase for the move but forgot to remove batteries…. yup, i bet that airline crew and bag boy had a laugh!

Jasmin October 7, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Ah, moving. The thing that separates the friends from the acquaintances.

The worst thing about moving, in my opinion, are the judgmental looks a knitter/spinner gets when it comes to moving The Stash. The folks who help you move (friends OR pros) will always make judgmental comments about how much yarn do you *really* need, or some foolish thing about how only the elderly knit, or worst of all- ask what the box marked “UFOs” really has in it.

Karma October 7, 2009 at 9:10 pm

The worst part about moving has got to be either the packing up or the trying to clean up the old house….after you’ve packed everything and are exhausted and really just want to leave.

The best part of moving is, hopefully, a new and better home (preferably already sparkling clean) and having everything out of boxes and returning to the normal routine.

Good luck with the move! It will all be over soon, hopefully! =)

Megan aka KnitEurope October 7, 2009 at 9:12 pm

Best thing about moving from a knitter/spinner’s point of view? That you find all of your stash and get to see how pretty it all is.

Worst thing about moving from a knitter/spinner’s point of view? That you find all of your stash and realize how much you have!

Everyone else has pretty much covered the good, the bad, and the ugly about all the other parts of moving. Best of luck to you!

Heather Jackson October 7, 2009 at 9:17 pm

The worst part of moving is making sure all those boxes are really labeled well. You think you will remember but wouldn’t you know it, the one thing you absolutely must have is impossible to find.
The best thing about moving is all the new discoveries, places and new favorite resturants to try.

Just remember there is so much less to move if you purge! purge!purge! Do some each day with friends to help if you get lucky.

Judy in NH October 7, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Worst Part – leaving the old place
Best Part – starting the new place

When we moved to our home 15 years ago, the thing I was most excited about was the heat. We had been heating with only wood for many years and I was so looking forward to turning a thermostat. Well, we spent the entire day getting everything in and were exhausted and very cold. I got all excited and ceremoniously turned the thermostat for heat and nothing happened – zip, zilch, nada – no heat. We had to make an emergency, late night call to the “heat guy” – which cost a fortune – and spent our first night with an electric mini heater and many blankets.
The good part is that we spent many happy years in that house and my children have wonderful memories – especially that first night all huddled together laughing and snuggling.

Heather October 7, 2009 at 9:28 pm

The worst part about moving is unpacking and trying to find a place for everything in the new house. It never fails, no matter how carefully you pack, there is always something that gets broken and something that gets thrown away instead of moved.. The last time we moved it was a little figurine that my grandma gave to me. I remember it being in her home and it was kind of a goofy little figurine of an elf with under a mushroom, but it meant a lot to me. We also had some boxes that disappeared. The only thing that we can think of is that they got thrown in the junk pile instead of the move pile.

betsy October 7, 2009 at 9:37 pm

Ugh, moving. I have to say that I hate packing, though as others have said it does give you the chance to purge–and uncover long forgotten items. So I suppose it could be both the best and worst part of moving, though I think moving (at least the logistics of it) is the pits.

HilaryGermany (in Sicily) October 7, 2009 at 9:48 pm

Try moving to a country where you don’t speak the language! I’ve done that twice in the last 9 years now. And Italian Governmental Red Tape!! Yikes!!! Italian Driving!! And our street is about 2 feet wider than the moving truck, and has on-street parking!!

Amy O'Neill Houck October 7, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Hi Susie–My spouse is in the Coast Guard, and therefore we move every 2-3 years. This last year was our biggest move ever-to Alaska from Maryland. To me, the best part about moving is going through your stuff and shedding the stuff you don’t need, and the worst part is having to go through all your stuff, and then set it up again on the other end! We love seeing new places getting to know new communities and meet new people, but it’s always a little daunting at first when you don’t know anyone. I do a lot of wandering and exploring and purposeful getting lost when I first getting to a place in order to get to know it.

Good luck with your move!

Janet October 7, 2009 at 10:05 pm

The worst part of moving is saying, “good bye.” The best part of moving is saying, “Nice to meet you.”

Jane October 7, 2009 at 10:07 pm

best part about moving — finding the perfect place to live, the excitement about starting fresh

worst part about moving — the actual moving. ugh

Sarah V. October 7, 2009 at 10:20 pm

For me, the worst worst worst part of moving is the physical carrying of boxes and heavy stuff. I actually kind of like the organizing of both packing and unpacking, but I hate getting all sweaty with the lifting and the carrying. I always feel very self conscious. Ick! Thanks for hosting another lovely giveaway! :)

Sarah V. October 7, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Oops! Hit post too soon. The best part is finding stuff you thought you’d lost, or just forgot about, when you pack! I’ve found awesome things when packing up apartments :)

Heather October 7, 2009 at 10:23 pm

The Best: I love the potential that comes with moving. The opportunity to rearrange, reorganize, get rid of everything extra, and start again clean. I’m currently moving, and my absolute favorite part has been picking new paint colors and watching the rooms become what I wanted them to be.

The Worst: Packing, stress, lifting/carrying, finding out that the last tenant’s baby had spilled an entire container of yogurt on the floor and they just left it there (so now it’s all dried on) and cleaning two different places.
