The No Good, Very Bad Day

by Susan on July 2, 2009

It took me 6 hours to drive the normally four-hour drive from our house in NY to Woods Hole, where we catch the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. (Harry and Logan were with me; Patrick and Erin were already on-Island.) After the first half hour the blower for the a/c stopped working. Then we got stuck in traffic behind an accident. Then we hit an hour long back up to cross the Bourne Bridge.

Then the dog, who had shown not one sign of needing to go, peed all over my lap. Peed. All. Over. My. Lap.

By the time we got to Woods Hole, met Patrick and Erin, and unloaded 150 pounds of yarn from the car, it was obvious that I wasn’t going to have time to park the car and make the boat. They went on ahead. I parked the car and spent 45 minutes trying to get the key out of the $*??/!! Volvo before giving up. (If you’d like a white Volvo station wagon, it’s in the Palmer lot.)

Now I’m on an over-crowded ferry, by myself, in slightly damp, sticky, dog-pee smelling shorts, heading for the Vineyard.

It isn’t all bad though; look at this pretty yarn I dyed yesterday!

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuhg. What a day!!!

I’m glad that it’s over with now and I hope that you got a shower. :)

And that is very pretty yarn! :)

Oh man Susie! In Turkish, there’s a saying — Some days you can’t make a kroosh! (A kroosh is worth way less than a penny…worth so little that it doesn’t exist anymore.) But, instead of making a kroosh today, you did indeed make some very beautiful yarn yesterday! Have a safe and very happy 4th of July! (I would say I can’t believe the dog peed on your lap….but it’s happened to me before. It really is disgusting, not to mention quite shocking.)

You deserve a hot shower and then something lovely and cold and relaxing. Your choice.

Fantastic colors. I do wish I could attend one of your dye workshops.

Sorry about your bad day… BUT OMG THAT YARN IS STUNNING. I’m drooling…

Lori aka knittingfool July 2, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Yummmmm.

Er, the yarn, not the day.

HLF July 2, 2009 at 9:50 pm

I suppose there are worse, um, accidents to be in. But seriously, iew. He’s lucky he didn’t get tossed out the window!
And I want to dye like you when I grow up. :-)

I think the dog sensed you were frustrated and having a bad day, and wanted to give you that warm feeling of knowing that you’re loved… cuz dogs only pee on those they truly love : )

Your yarn is gorgeous!

Colleen July 2, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Please don’t move to Australia, even if that is where the ice cream parts that fall off the cone parts all land….because these days even happen there, sometimes ;-)

Suzy July 2, 2009 at 11:30 pm

boo to dog pee in your lap, et all…yay for all your beautiful green yarns!

katy July 2, 2009 at 11:46 pm

At least it was pee and not poop!?! My poor mutt Lucy pooped on my lap in the car once. Thank goodness I wasn’t driving, because I would have crashed in the middle of yelling “She’s pooping! She’s pooping!” in a high-pitched squeal…

So yeah. That’s a little meager silver lining for the day from you-know-where…

And the yarn is *incredible*! I want it all!

Rona Thau July 3, 2009 at 12:09 am

exquisite colors
(the yarn too!)

? do you now think shorts may be jinxed ?
…just something to ponder…

hope tomorrow is a WAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaY more plesant day!

turtle July 3, 2009 at 12:25 am

well…. tomorrow will be another day, a new day! Lol at the volvo key, that happened to my mom with my jeep once, i got a call while i was in reno (she and the jeep were in hawaii). Gorgeous yarns!

you poor baby! well, if today was that bad, tomorrow has to be better!

Jennifer July 3, 2009 at 7:04 am

My family contends that every trip to the Vineyard gives you a story to tell. I’m sorry your story was one of frustration. Here’s hoping the stories from the weekend are much happier!

Jane from Maryland July 3, 2009 at 7:32 am

It’s a weird thing, but as we say in my family “It’s all about the ferry.” The drama, the joy, the frustration, the excitement, and at the end, Martha’s Vineyard! Our most exciting ferry crossing was when we got there early and decided to drink a couple of the beers we had bought to take with us. And then, they put us on the Governor, where you have to back onto the dang thing. Not too easy after the beer! But, I imagine the ferry crews have seen it all and we weren’t the first.
May today be calmer and sweeter!

Carol Gibbs July 3, 2009 at 7:35 am

Hope today is quiet and fun!

You deserve a leisure lay down. Tell everybody it’s a mama’s order, even if this is not from your mama. :) Wonderful yarn, I so want to order some. My husband on the other hand will like say I still need to make a dent into stash first. Hey he doesn’t look under the bed often, and I could conveniently re-organize my stash and add it in.

Elana July 3, 2009 at 8:39 am

I always love it when you say you’re in Woods Hole :-) . Ugh, Palmer lot. I can ask friends where good off street parking is in WH now…I know there were roads behind my house that were okay, and at least it’s a nice walk. But that was 20 years ago :-) .

Yay for being on the Vineyard!!!

Jenny July 3, 2009 at 9:02 am

LAME, that is LAME. What a crappy day, I’m sorry. I’m sure by now you’re feeling better, though. And I did kind of shamefully giggle at the dog peeing all over your lap, and the white volvo in Palmer Lot. I’m sorry. I’m glad you’re home, though!!! :)

GORGEOUS YARN! I decided next weekend I’m teaching myself how to dye. CAN’T WAIT.

Erin July 3, 2009 at 9:13 am

I feel your pain (about the ferry hassle, not the dog pee). That ferry can be such a bottleneck in the summer. We’ve had some white knuckle trips trying to make our ferry, both from Woods Hole and Vineyard Haven. About the dog pee, OMG. Well, may that be your worst ferry story of all time.

Kimberly July 3, 2009 at 9:49 am

You know, its stories like these though, that make your blog so enjoyable to read…well one of the things that makes it enjoyable!

We’ve all had that day before….well I’ve had it sans the beautiful yarn!

Love your blog.

Christina July 3, 2009 at 11:15 am

That absolutely takes the cake in the worst drive ever. The yarn is stunning, though.

stacey July 3, 2009 at 11:24 am

BEAUTIFUL yarn. I’m sorry that you’ve had a bad week (goats beating on you, scratches, traffic, dog pee). Hopefully next week will be better.

Leigh July 3, 2009 at 2:00 pm

A dog peeing in your lap. That sounds awful. I’ve had my dog throw up in my hair, but never pee on my lap…I’m sorry.

Kristin McCurry July 3, 2009 at 9:07 pm

I think I spy some peacock in there, don’t I? Right now, with three projects in that lovely hue on the needles, I don’t care to see it again any time soon. Send me lovely pinks and reds!

Carolyn C July 4, 2009 at 8:09 am

Sending sympathy……. and thanks for a “yarn”
well told, followed by some lovely yarn.
The dog’s contribution…. particularly memorable.
Makes my flat tire in the middle of a downpour much tamer. I’ll remember, it can always be worse.

Lisa Stockebrand (aka. lasdcm) July 5, 2009 at 11:28 am

SYMPATHY once I took my cat to the vet, on a bus, a public transit bus, he peed, at the beginning of the ride…..sympathy….

karen July 6, 2009 at 2:44 pm
