I can’t imagine ever coming up with a gift that would be worthy of your birthday. A baby unicorn maybe? An all expense paid trip to Camelot? That signing harp from Jack and the Beanstalk?
How do you find a gift for a woman who spends every minute of her day giving? A woman who gave me everything. Like self confidence and a love of reading and a sense of humor. I am who I am because of the things you gave me.
You taught me to be generous by example. Remember the time Carrie and I were furious with you because you invited a visiting African family to Thanksgiving dinner? We were worried there wouldn’t be enough food but you wanted them to experience our hospitality and traditions. Of course there was enough food. There always is. And it was a lovely day. And I learned something about being a little less rigid, a little less selfish.
By actual count, you have moved me and all my stuff in and out of 13,000,000 apartments, and every time, you swear it’s the last time you are, by God, moving me! But we both know that that’s the biggest lie you’ve ever told. If I called you from Antarctica you’d come.
You have always been there for me, in my corner, on my side. Telling me that I can do anything, be anything.
I hope your birthday is lovely and relaxing and peaceful. You’ll need your rest once that baby unicorn arrives in the mail!
Love,
Susie

Aww, happy birthday, Susan’s Mom! I’ve only met you once (at the first Shearing Festival), but it was a pleasure!
And that Thanksgiving memory sounds like something out of Little Women…
Happy birthday Susan’s Mom. What a beautiful post and what a beautiful spirited and beautiful person Susan is… obviously traits gotten from her mama.

Susie,
What an awesome birthday tribute to your Mom. How fortunate you are to have such a beautiful relationship with your mother. You both are truly blessed.
Hoorah! Aren’t Mom’s Wonderful?! Ya know, all Mom’s really want is to know and hear you say “Thank You for Loving, Teaching, and Disciplining me, I am better for it.”
What you wrote is more beautiful than any birthday card bought in a store. I am sure that your Mom would say glowing things about her daughter, too. Enjoy your day, Susie’s Mom!

I wept reading your message to your darling mom. My mom had a stroke recently and I’m still waiting for her to come back to me… I get glimpses here and there and for now they are enough…. Happy birthday to your mom, she sounds amazing!

Happy Birthday, Carol!
Thank you, Susan, I just read this beautiful birthday present this morning, yesterday was a bit wild. I am so glad you remember our African friends and that Thanksgiving. I did not know you thought we did not have enough food but the day turned out to be a day of true Thanksgiving and it seems to be going on and reminding us to give from our hearts.
Ok, what do I feed this unicorn, she is beautiful?
Thank you again, Susan for keep us on our toes with all of your adventures.
Boo hoo . . . you made me cry!! That’s the kind of mother I want to be. Hope I’ve come close to measuring up!!!
Happy Birthday–belated, but oh, so from the heart!!
I am not, generally, a weepy sort of woman but this heartfelt tribute to your mother just choked me up. (And I’m at work!) What a beautiful relationship you have.
