Probably something you would like…

by Susan on April 3, 2009

This week’s edition of our weekly show-and-tell is being written at 4 a.m. after three long, fruitless nights of barn checks. Be kind.

If you haven’t read any of the mystery fiction of Josephine Tey you should. I hate to even call it mystery fiction because it’s so much more than that. Tey creates fully realized worlds and characters that stay with you forever. I’m rereading Brat Farrar right now. Earlier this week I read Miss Pym Disposes and The Franchise Affair. Tey died in 1952 and it used to be difficult to find these books- my copies are used hardbacks- but they are in print again in paperback.

Made me laugh.

Man who knitted and crocheted himself a motorcycle cozy. Or it might be an April Fools joke. Either way the pic is cool.

We don’t wear our shoes in the house, a habit I picked up when I lived in NYC and couldn’t stand the thought of the City invading my sanctuary via my soles. I’m always looking for cute inside-the-house shoes though and I may have found them here.

I have a bit of a bag collection. Not necessarily because I like bags overmuch- I’m just always looking for the magical bag that holds everything in just the right way. I love this.

Like cakewrecks? You’ll love passive-agressive notes.com. Do not read these at night when someone in the house is sleeping. Turns out, people HATE being woken up by the laughter of others. Go figure.

Interesting article about women knitting bandages for victims of leprosy. I spent several months at a Hansen’s Disease Center making a documentary about the people who lived there, and let me tell you, these people have been hard done by. I like the idea of anything that might bring them a little comfort.

Carol H. sent me the link to this great Nightline piece about my secret crush Jamie Oliver. Worth watching even if he doesn’t make your heart beat faster. Oliver had used his fame to change the way school children eat in the U.K. and the kid’s test scores have gone up and missed days have gone down as a result.

This really spoke to me. I’m going to print it out and put it on my fridge. I love “allow endings.” (Via SwissMiss)

I spent my sleepless nights watching every episode of the Australian Kath & Kim. So very funny.

Check out FiberCamp, the latest creation of Common Cod Fiber Guild’s creator Guido. I’m really impressed with Guido so I expect big things from FiberCamp.

Our friend Jean, a.k.a. ScottishLamb, found this cool project to help understand what’s happening to the bee population. You plant a specific type of sunflower seeds and, when they bloom, spend half and hour counting the number of bees to visit one flower.

I love these felt egg warmers, and these two mobiles.

Shareholder Dom created a chat room just for FoFF (that’s Friends of Fiber Farm) over at Lingr and it’s very cool. There’s a secret password- it’s the name of the goat that Erin walks on a leash and you can find it on the Lambcam page.

Did you know you can follow The Onion on Twitter?  Did you know you can follow me on twitter?

I LOVE McSweeney’s Lists and that’s the funniest one I’ve seen in a long time. The “AllOneWord” killed me, I think it’s so funny how people say that. At this point, do you think there’s anyone who says, “Oh, is there a space between those two words in your email address?” Oh, I laughed out loud. Thanks! Now I’m off to read passiveagressivenotes!

Susan I love all the ‘you might likes’ but I was especially keen on the ‘bee sunflower project’.. as an about to be apiarist aka beekeeper I am hugely sensitive to their plight. My hives are ready and my bees will beeee here soon. Thanks for that and I hope everyone considers it

I love these weekly lists, and I love the things other readers share–especially the photo-a-day project! I think I’m going to try it, too, maybe starting in June on my birthday.

I am madly in love with the face lotions made by Soy of Life. They’re all natural, and made by a woman who started working out of her basement and selling them to customers individually until one of those customers happened to be a buyer for Whole Foods, who then picked up her line.

The lotions are wonderful–they smell great, go on smooth and creamy without being greasy, and a few friends have commented on my skin’s glow since I started using them. http://www.thesoyoflife.com

My ex-brother-in-law owned and was the editor of The Onion for years, late 80′s and 90′s. Not sure when he sold it.

I am very grumpy waiting for my in-laws to come for 2 nights on their way back from Florida. I would love them if they were my neighbours, and didn’t bring their little senile smelly nippy nasty dog with them…….I mean their cute little dog with them……everywhere…. all the time… every visit….

Hoping to make it to the Nutmeg Spinners Guild meeting tomorrow to hear/see Abby Franquemont, author of The Spindle Lifestyle — and get a lesson… don’t know much about her, but she apparently has a large following…

I LOVE the soy candles from http://www.sojacandles.com/store/. They smell amazing (our whole house smells great event when they are not lit), and they last forever. Every season Jim comes out with new scents (like Blueberry Cobbler). He also marrys unique scents together that work really well like Vanilla-Grapefruit (who would have thought), Orange-Pomegranate. Yum! At Christmas he has things like Gingerbread, Egg Nog etc. Okay, now I’m hungry. Enjoy!

Josephine Tey’s books are terrific. It’s such a shame that there aren’t more. Her very best is Daughter of Time, in which a laid up Detective Alan Grant uses his recuperation period searching through historical textx looking for proof that Richard III didn’t kill the two princes in the tower.

Hey Susie, Jamie Oliver had a third child today. Petal Blossom Rainbow Oliver. That makes 3 daughters.
