Last weekend’s handspun yarn and book giveaway was great because I learned a little something about a lot of you. Many, many, many commenters mentioned that they didn’t spin but were dying to learn how. (See! I do read all the comments.)
That info inspired me to do another giveaway just for you spinner-wanna-bes. And this one is a doozy. The winner of this giveaway will receive a copy of Teach Yourself Visually Handspinning.
The winner will also receive a drop spindle kit from Silversun Alpacas. I’ve ordered this kit before to give as a gift and it is just lovely. The kit includes a top spindle, 2 oz of white/cream wool Top Fiber roving, which is very easy to start your spinning with, and 2 oz. of hand dyed alpaca and wool batt (soft and fluffy as a cloud) wool Top fiber and instructions.
And, just cause I’m feeling good about getting my manuscript in to my editor, I’m also going to send the winner 4 ounces of MVFF/HVFF cormo roving.
Everyone is welcome to enter- not just newbies! Here’s all you have to do: leave a comment in this blog post telling me about your pet or pets. Are you a cat person? A dog lover? A horsey type? A parrot collector? A hamster aficionado? A tropical fish wrangler? Whatever you are, I want to hear about it.
Since this is a BIG giveaway we’ll keep taking comments through Saturday morning at 10 EST, 3/7/2009. Only one entry per person please! The winner will be chosen at random and announced here on the blog. The winner will then have 7 days to contact us and claim their prize.
Please feel free to spread the word on your blog or in your ravelry groups. I’d love to see us break 300 comments on this one, but I can’t do it without you!
GOOD LUCK!
EDITED TO ADD: Farm friend and shareholder Kathy M has super-generously donated two more drop to add to the giveaway!
We will throw in a copy of the book and a selection of our spinning fibers. Your chances of winning this giveaway just tripled!
Welcome chicks!

I have two beagles that I love to death! Trini and Bagel! They’re both lemon and white and I love them sooo much! While I’m at school though I have a wonderful 2 year old coffee plant! His name is Brewno (get it?) He’s actually growing some beans right now so I hope in about 6 months to have enough for a cup of coffee. That would be awesome!
i’m a cat person! i love all animals, but my two cats have been with me for 17 & 14 years and i love them with all my heart.
wonderful giveaway, thank you. i’m dying to learn to spin!
Wow! WOW! What a totally fantastic and generous give away.
We’re animal folks. But we live in NYC so right now two cats. We had a dwarf hamster that moved cross country with us (she was a trooper) but no longer graces our bookshelves. Anything cuddly, generally, we let in the house
I’m a dog person. Our current pooch is a poodle mix, we’re just not certain what he’s mixed with, lol. We named him Harvey.
I grew up with dogs, and still love them. But living in an apartment means a cat makes a lot more sense right now. Which works out well for my kitty, Sebastian. He’s a giant Maine Coon (looking) cat who is a terror to most, but really just a big snugglepuss.
I have a zebra finch named Lucy. My husband is highly allergic to animals so my pet choices are fairly limited, otherwise we’d have quite the menagerie.
My pet is a big furry herding dog, a Bouvier des Flandres. Good mix of easy going socialability along with instinct to protect the family. They often get mistaken for a big black English sheepdog or some sort of bear…
I’ll be happy to do my part in spreading the word at my blog.
Our family pet is one you know and love, Chappy, as in http://www.chappysmom.com. Chappy is Deb’s dog and our granddog. I was with Deb from day #1, I helped pick him out and I’ve been daffy about him ever since. He is named Chappy because it’s a Vineyard name… and I’m all about everything Vineyard as you know.
Congrats on getting the manuscript in the mail.
growing up we always had dogs, in fact my dad used to race sled dogs (Siberian Huskies mostly). as an adult my living arrangements don’t really allow for dogs. hubby and I have two cats: Dave (the old man, about 12 or 13) and Buster (will be 3 this Spring). Norah calls them “meows” because that is what “cats say.”
I have a wonderful Maltese-Bichon mix named Mia. She’s essentially a little white fluffball. We’ve been collecting her fun when we comb her. Unlike normal dog fur, it actually seems a lot more similar to wool roving. I want to learn how to spin so that I can spin some of her fur, and knit a nice lace scarf out of it.
We have one cat. I think it is important for kids to care for pets. The kids would love to have LOTS of pets, but here in the city, one cat is just about right.
I grew up with guniea pigs and a bunny who I had for 9 1/2 years. Right now I live in the city so I have no pets. Unless a mannequin dog counts!
Cat person. Sadly, SweetPea recently left us after a long life and illness. The kids still talk about her…
Thanks for all the give-a-ways!
-Jim
Well, I think in terms of animals for me, I’m a cat person, though I haven’t had the opportunity to have many for myself. Visiting you cured me of wanting my own farm animals (though I love “having” yours!), though I think I’d still like to have a bird someday after I get over my fear of it biting me. I would also love to have some guinea pigs and bunnies when I have enough room for them to have the awesome enclosure they deserve.
Should I win this drop-spinning giveaway of awesomeness, I’ll be sending it along to a friend. I got her hooked on spinning this past weekend at Stitches West, and she’s using a quickie-made CD spindle right now.
My household does not have any pets yet. Simply because we have 4 daughters who require more work than any one should ever have to do and if I depend on the aforementioned daughters to care for a pet, the poor soul would be just that – a poor soul. So we wait.
We have 1 dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a fish tank and an outside pond. My son lives with us and is a total animal lover. He has in his room 3 turtles, a gecko, a bearded dragon and some kind of special frog (I am not sure of the name). Most of these are adopted because he works at PetSmart and any animals that are “damaged” are usually destroyed and he can’t stand that so he adopts them.
Nice giveaway. Thanks so much for the opportunity!
Allergies have gotten the best of us lately…but when I was in elementary school, we lived on a farm and my pet was a duckling named Sunshine. He’d park himself in the pocket of my overalls while I raked leaves. Someday, I’ll live on a farm again and add some sheep! Oh, how I wish I knew how to spin! My parents found an old wheel at an antique store for me, I stare at it fondly just hoping someday I’ll figure it out.
I love pets. I pretty much grew up on a mini-farm in Los Angeles. We had geese, chickens, hamsters, fish, cats, dogs, horses and rabbits. My top favorite pets are dwarf hamsters, rabbits and cats. I love my dwarf hamsters because when I went to school in NY they were easy to transport and kept me from being so home sick. Rabbits, I love just because they are soft, comforting and funny. I love that my rabbit would lay on the floor calming watching TV and then suddenly jump and twist in the air. Overall, my favorite is the cat. They are so independent creatures that train their owners.
I have two dogs (a Tennessee mountain rescue mutt and a Chesapeake Bay retriever) and 11 laying hens. I’ve been an animal lover my whole life and showed goats and sheep and horses in 4H as a kid. I miss having my hands in wool. There’s nothing like it!
Congrats on the book!
Although, you know, you should really be READING that book … I keep telling you you should learn to spin (grin).
Since I obviously spin already AND I own a copy of that book, don’t enter me in the drawing (with my luck, this would be the one I would win), but I do want to say that that’s a fantastic book. And your Cormo roving is a dream to spin … I wish I had more of it!
Pets, that’s an easy one. I have three cats. My oldest kitty is Gwen. She’s all black and she was the kitten of my sister’s cat Pepper. I traded a riding lawn mower for her but that’s a story for another day, the funny bit is that BIL still thinks he got the better end of that deal. Next came Gabby, a torty point Himalayan who was a stray and is near toothless but only about ten years old. She’s definitely my outgoing people cat and is all personality. She *loves* everyone whether or not they like her and she expects adoration. It’s hard to believe she was a stray but she was indeed. The rescue league said she was the most flea-ridden cat they ever rescued. Lastly we adopted Winnie, a calico, also a stray. Winnie was feral until she was four months old. She’d be adopted out and returned twice before she came to us. She lived in the bathroom for 6 months and didn’t eat unless it was from my hand first. She’s very gradually becoming socialized. I still can’t pick her up but she loves to snuggle if it’s in a place in the house where she feels safe- generally our bed or the couch. Most folks don’t believe she exists but she really does, I have pictures to prove it!
Wow! That’s awfully generous of you, and it would be amazing to win. I adore alpaca in general, and it’d be so exciting to spin my own fiber.
As for pets, I have a wonderful mutt of a dog and a russian tortoise. I’m allergic to most things with fur, but the dog is so worth taking daily medication for. Pets are wonderful creatures, and my life is much better for them.
My SO and I are dog people with cats. It’s a apartment world and we don’t have the land that we’d need for the big dogs we love. We have three “sweet as pie” cow patterned kittycats.
My dog is a rescue German Shepherd/Lab mix I named Cassius because I didn’t like his current name of Cash. I thought it would make him brave and fearless. I should have named him George Gobel. He is a loud barker, but having been abused in a previous life, he is very timid and VERY laid back. But he is my shadow and I love him no matter what.
I’m a classroom teacher who has had many pets in the classroom. They’ve ranged from a toad, fish, rats (great with kids), hamsters (sleeps all day), guinea pigs (also great classroom pets because they’ll talk to you), and Himmy, my himalayan rabbit. A parent “found” him one day and brought him to my class. He was wonderful. I left the cage top open so that he could do his thing when he needed to. However, the rest of the time, he was free to wander around at will. I told the children that they could not chase him but needed to wait until Himmy came to visit them. Luckily, Himmy visited the children frequently. The benefits were that the children stayed calmer around Himmy and that I stayed calmer around him also. I miss him.
We are a multi-species family! We own several Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, two of them are even real AKC champions. Of course in my heart all our pets our champions. In addition to the dogs we have a cat and a Blue Fronted Amazon. In the last five years two of our dogs died and a Timneh Grey Parrot. We love all our furry/feathered friends but not a day goes by that we don’t miss the ones that are gone.
What an incredibly awesome giveaway – very generous!
I am owned by multiple wonderful critters — 2 Tennessee Walking horses (Stormy & Dixie), 3 cutesy pooches (Ratdog, SqueakyToy & Piggie), and 2 chubby cats (FatCat & ScatCat). Yes, the household pets DO have “real” names (Bridgette, Kelley, Pixie, Katie & Annie), but they answer best to the nicknames which match their personalities. Stormy is AKA “Snorky” because my niece couldn’t say his name right when she was little, and Dixie also answers to Chix (Dixie…Chix… get it?)
Anyway, get a pet person talking and they’ll never quit, so… happy contest!
We have 3 parrots. The littlest one is a red-bellied parrot from Africa who has a deep voice and a real bad attitude. My husband is the only one who can handle him bared-handed. When Winnie is in the right mood, he’ll fluff all his feathers out and say “Gimme kiss!” in his gruff little ganster’s voice. It cracks me up every time – this badass parrot asking for a kiss. After Steve kisses him on the beak, Winnie grumbles “Good boy!” Too funny.
I am a dog person – Stewie is my extremely neurotic, but very lovable, black lab.
I’m a dog person. We have a red nosed Pit Bull. She is the queen of the house and doesn’t like to be reminded that she has to walk on four legs. She prefers to sleep on people beds, with her head on a pillow and a blanket covering her up. Our Queen loves eggnog and vanilla icecream (very rare treats). We know her life is getting more painful due to arthritis, but she is so stoic and elegant we have a hard time saying no to her.
What a FANTASTIC contest! Thank you.
I’m bi-pet-al and proud, which is to say I am a dog person, born and bred, who has grown to love and adore cats. My 1/2-siamese tabby Snoopy is to blame… he was my first, and he’s 15 lbs of yowling, purring, demanding cat with the affectionate devotion of man’s best friend.
I’m a dog lover, puppy lover, although we have an angora rabbit and gold fish too. As much as I enjoy dogs and have just rescued a lab/great pyrenees mix puppy just before Christmas, the kids have a big say in our growing pet family. My seven year old daughter loves animals and pleaded to rescue a beautiful angora rabbit this past fall. She does have a goldfish that is 3 years old named ‘ten day’. His name came about due to the fact he was won at a summer carnival, the last sumer carnival of the season and the last fish won. His predecessors that summer never seemed to make it through the week or even to the car, so my husband and I nick named the new fish ‘ten day’ believing that would be his life span….. little did we know that for Christmas that year my daughter would Santa for a proper home for Ten Day ( we had just been keeping him in larger fish bowl and vases up to that point.) So for Christmas Ten Day got an apartment (tank), furniture (plants), central air (filter) and friends (of the fishy kind). My daughter and I always dream about what our next pets will be. After our move this summer – we’re agreed on chickens, then perhaps goats and maybe sheep – we both love to knit – and love fiber projects.
I do suppose this was more than you were asking for – but I just had to share!
My one and only pet is an angora bunny named Fenway. I knit, but don’t spin, and my goal is now to lean how so that I can spin his pretty wool into yarn! I used to have a beagle named Rusty, but sadly he had to be put down about a year ago– I still miss him terribly.
We have a gorgeous (and she knows it!) Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever named Molly and a lovely, sometimes-shy cat named Gracie.
Or, should I say, they have us — they seem convinced that they own the house and everything in it, and that we are their pet laps/patters/bringers-of-food/etc…
I have 2 stinky shedding dogs – an old moldy Bassett named Winston, and a mid-life Boxer named Max (my sweetest pet ever). they are my DD’s brothers and my sons. The old really stinky Bassett costs us more in meds each month than I spend on personal grooming. Another thing we love about them is how…um really fragrant they can be. Makes you wonder where all the stink comes from sice all they eat is organic dog food. Wish we could figure out a way to spin dog hair….ewww, that’s just wrong.
Cheers to you and your wonderful giveaway.
I am a vicarious pet person, since I have four little human pets of my own, I leave the animal tending to others. I’m loving the horses around the corner, who graciously allow my pets to care for them twice a week all winter and ride them and show them in the summer.
I have a dachshund of a different color! He is the color of a weimaraner – a gorgeous silvery grey. But because of his color (some genetic thing – double recessive or something) he has very little hair – touching him is like touching velvet. What is so funny is that we have been accused of everything from shaving to dying him because he is such an unusual color. Its hard to convince people this is a legitimate dachshund color. But the attention he gets whenever we go anywhere makes it worth it – he eats it up!
I LOVE animals–so I guess I’m just that…an Animal Person! We have a 16 year old cat, Ace…who think’s he’s half human-half dog! And Rudy our new (6 mnth old) Shih Tzu puppy! I blog about the 2 of them so much, I’m sure my readers are getting real tired of their stories.
I grew up loving farm life…then when my Grandparents moved to “the city” they continued to raise bunnies & chickens.
You are so generous!
We have a housefull of animals here. Two dogs – Milo (a rat terrier), = and Kiki (a mutt – a sato from Puerto Rico), 2 cats – Baily (who is almost 20) and Biscuit(our latest arrival), 2 hamsters – Skeeter and Mitchie, one Turtle – Shelly, and my daughter has 2 beta fish.
That’s all at the moment, though our weekly volunteering at a cat shelter is getting risky!
Dogs, Dogs, Dogs!! I have 2 Border Collies (Gus and Gracie) and a mini Dachshund (Annie) who runs the show. The other 2 dogs are at her mercy. Very funny! I also have 4 Angora Rabbits – fiber to dye for.
My dogs keep me going and they give love so unconditionally – it is hard to stay mad even when I find my mini doxie buried in a pile of yarn that used to be the shawl I was knitting. Boy did she have fun!
Dogs for sure! I have two right now (we lost our two old rescued guys last summer) a 2-year-old Weimaraner and a 6-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback. They keep me sane and get me out of the house (I work from home a lot of the time). And I love the idea of spindle spinning!
My pet of pets? You know, that has varie over the years. Right now, it is Yaqui, my coated xoloitzquintle, otherwise know as Mexican hairless. Since Yaqui is coated, he is very hairy. We call him a hairy hairless. We have a birthday party every year or so, and people bring him treats. He is a sweet, lovey boy and curls up on the end of the bed, my side, so that I end up diagonal. His one flaw? He loves yarn and fiber. He has tossed cormo in the air and had a wonderful time with it. He can snarl yarn like nothing you’ve ever seen. He’s training me to put my wool away, but, in the meantime, he has been very, very bad and undoubtedly had a great time. I love him anyway.
We have two cats. I like all kinds of animals, but I prefer the company of cats in my home. One is a long hair, super fluffy orange kitty (I could easily knit a sweater from his left behinds), the other a very long and skinny b/w kitty. We rescued them from the same shelter and, aside from the occasional “it’s MY bed” skirmish, they get along quite well.
I have four cats and funny enough my boyfriend became attached to them! He’s the cat lady not me. I rescued them through various ways over the last few years but I wasn’t so great with playing them. He’s like a little kid playing with them.
If I had a house with a big yard I would definitely have some dogs too. I do also like fish and prefer freshwater because of ease of care. I do feel sorry for them trapped in a tiny aquarium though so I don’t have any.
I hope I win this since I just had to sell my spinning wheel and then gave away my drop spindle so my friend could learn how to spin.
I am very much a dog person. I’m actually allergic to both dogs and cats, but for a dog I’m willing to suffer it out. (I was never allergic when I was younger – hoping it would go away with time)
We’re hoping to get a puppy sometime in the next two years – of course, it depends on a lot of factors.
How much would I love to win this prize – I’m just starting to learn to spin, and definitely need help!
I grew up on a farm and am an outdoor-animal sort of person – because of that, I’ve had some people tell me that I don’t know what it is to have a pet. I don’t really have one now (our barn cats right now are fairly shy), but in the past we’ve had many cats and dogs and one chicken that I definitely considered pets – we had them because they were friendly, not because they were otherwise useful.
I was a cat person until BeeBee found me. This cocker spaniel has taught me what it means to love unconditionally. He came with so much baggage that he couldn’t explain and I would never understand. So I accept it and deal. So what if barks ( a lot), snarls at other dogs, and chews the furniture ( and my spindle). He is a good snuggler and greets me with excitement and joy. Hey, nobody’s perfect.
I have two tortoises. 1is the size of a cheeseburger and is full grown. The other is 7lbs and will live 100+ years and will weigh 150lbs full grown. Despite popular belief the are supercuddly animals and we snuggle with them on our laps or shoulders pretty much every day. I love how easy they to take care of but I keep them because they are cute
Kitten!!! I grew up on a farm and have had animals all my life, but this past summer we (DH and I) moved from Alberta to Ontario and left all our pets with my mom at the farm (they love it out there) Until last week were living with roommates that are very allergic to pets. I missed my pets sooooo much. The roomates finally left for good on Friday, so on Saturday I had a brand new baby kitten. Her name is Tinta and she’s a little tabby kitty. She’s getting a whole bunch of pent up, backloged, love!
Susan, you are so generous! My family has a wonderful Brittany dog who is white and orange. Her name’s Pumpkin Pie (with whipped cream!). We also have three water turtles. The dog barks to ask us to take the turtles out of the tank so she can follow them around as they explore the room. We also have 5 cardinal families that live in the brush in our yard, and we enjoy watching them every day. If I could live on a farm, I’d definitely have an alpaca and a tunisian goat.
Thanks!
I’ve had dogs, cats, and rabbits growing up. Right now I’m fostering a momma cat and four kittens from out local shelter. I feel quite spoiled to have gotten to enjoy the cute fuzzy kitten stage and yet someone else will get to deal with the naughty curious kitty stage.
I love the small “pocket pet” types. I currently have my two adorable rat girls, Lacey Lou and Miss Victoria, and my family has had many rats before as well. I also love ferrets, house rabbits, chinchillas, degus, and sugar gliders. I also have a fascination with the large birds, like cockatoos and parrots. I would happily have just about any pet, and my love for animals was my main factor in choosing to go to school to be a vet tech! I’ll graduate in December.
I’ll be that lady who ends up with all the rescue animals. ^-^
2 female manx cats………Purrier and Ives……….and I love them as much as they love me……..
I am an animal lover in general, and thrilled that the offspring seem to be following in my footsteps. We have one dog, Mr. Smither’s our chocolate and tan long haired miniature dachshund. Then there’s Jiji our black cat we pulled out of a garbage barrel on the NYS thruway a decade or so back. Varied hamsters. Currently we are saving our cage for the hamster’s at my daughter’s school. We get them all holidays and vacations. I have volunteered with dog rescues for years. Very rewarding. Every once and a while the kids start on me about a Hedgehog (which btw are illegal in NYC?) I would love a book on spinning, my 11 year old daughter would like to learn as well but in NYC the classes are a bit much to justify when I already have a money invested in a stash.
I love birds. My favorites were a pair of zebra finches I had for many years. It is unusual for them to mate in captivity, but mine bred like rabbits! Over a dozen babies in that marriage. I think they were very happy and in love.
When I was a teenager I enjoyed working at our local zoo. I volunteered on the petting farm and the goats were my favorite. The babies used to bleat when they’d see me coming so they could nibble on my skirt! I swear they gave hugs and kisses. I have never been in a position to have a goat of my own, but if I ever own a spot of land, I think I would like to try it.
I don’t have any pets, but if I could I would have a whole mini-farm: dogs, sheep, a horse, a cow, and chickens! I miss having animals!
I have a black Lab/ Great Dane mix named Cooler, who is almost 12 years old. He’s a real love. 115 lbs, very snuggly, and would be a lap dog if I let him up on the couch! He and my cat KitKat, get along very well. She’s definitely alpha, though — if she wants Cooler’s cushy bed, she walks over and lies down, even if he’s there. He heaves a great sigh, gives me a long-suffering look, and gets up and moves. He has a good 100 lbs. on her, but that doesn’t matter to him… she’s in charge and everyone knows it! KitKat is also almost 12. They’re both rescues from the MSPCA — Cooler when he was 2, KitKat when she was 4. I spend most evenings with both of them curled up either on me, under me, or behind me on the back of the couch.
They really are my best buddies — they kept me going after my husband died 2 years ago. At the end, Cooler wouldn’t leave my husband’s side. He hung out right next to my husband’s hospital bed (we had Hospice set him up so he could stay at home), with his head on the bed. He grieved, too, although we’re all doing much better these days.
I’m a cat person all the way, though I’ve met many very superior dogs, too. Heck, most hairy fluffy animals are pretty fine. Scales I’m not so fond of, but I respect your right to prefer them, etc..
I’m currently without a four legger. Our last cat died at the age of 19 and we just haven’t gotten another, mainly my DH isn’t up to it. If a deserving homeless kitty were to appear at our door, though, I’m sure he’d be the first to invite it in.
Wow, I’m actually here in time to enter…and it’s a topic I can go on forever about (but won’t)! I used to be a cat person…until 5 years ago when I got my first dog, Fritz. 6 weeks later, I got a second dog (Fritz needed a pet. Her name is Sasha). Two years after that, Abby came to live with us. The dogs share the roost with my first-pet-as-an-adult — Spice the cat. Spice is 14.5 years old now and is sitting on my lap purring as I type this (Abby is curled up at my feet). There is also the outdoor cat who adopted me — I’ve never named her, my theory being if she has no name, she’s not technically mine (ignore the $300 vet bill I had for her in January…and how I worry when she isn’t around when I get home at night). Finally, the pet I lost a few months ago was Zia, a ragamuffin cat who gave me such joy for 6 short years. Since I bought my share in October, I’ve wondered if I could actually handle a sheep or goat someday….. Thanks Susan!
Lucy, the canine love of my life, was the first pet I ever had, thanks to finally outgrowing my childhood allergies at age 22. When she died a few years ago, I needed some furry companionship, but I just wasn’t ready to “replace” her with another dog, so I adopted Frankie, my feisty Calico girl. She was a gateway cat – she got me hooked, and now that my cat-crazy boyfriend has moved in, we’ve adopted Hobo, a grey-and-white boy with big mitten paws with extra toes, and Birdy, a goofy tiger girl who got her name from the silly squawks she makes and the way she pecks at things when she sniffs them. So I guess I’m a crazy cat lady, but I like to fantasize about a big backyard with a couple mutts running around someday in the future too…
I don’t have any pets currently, but when I was a kid I had a cat.
But I think after today I might call my stash my current pet. I just came back from Stitches West I added the few things I purchased, re-organized, spent some time with, and petted my stash.
I’m an animal person, period. Cats, dogs, horses, sheep, goats, etc – love ‘em all for different reasons and they’re all my favorite! I’ve had cats, dogs and horses of my own before, but currently have just 1 cat. In fact, I just adopted her 2 days ago! I’m so glad that I can help such a deserving animal have a home, especially since she’s older and had been at the shelter for a while. (Not that you’d know she was a ‘mature’ cat, considering how much energy she has…!) Someday when I have a real yard, I’d also like to raise chickens.
So excited for this giveaway! I’ve wanted to learn to spin for quite a while now, but have been leery of creating new ways to add to my stash!
(allegria13 on rav)
We have always been dog people. However, we have had cows, chickens, cats, and a runaway peacock live with us too. (Fortunately the real owners finally came to claim the peacock because our rooster was not impressed by the peacock’s overtures to him.)
Ginger, our St. Bernard and Tippy and Brownie, our beloved mutts have passed on. We still have Hootie and Boo, a cross between chocolate labs and field spaniels, who were born on Halloween over 13 years ago. Three years ago the vet found a large tumor on Hootie’s liver and we had to decide to operate or bring her home to live out her last days chasing rabbits, her favorite sport. We did the later and have been happy with that choice since the vet only gave her about a 30% chance of survival during the operation. Three years later she and her silly sister Boo continue to amuse and beguile us. We don’t know what pets the future holds for us but we will love what ever comes our way.
Charlotte
We have 2 dogs from the SPCA. Our female Bailey is a Shar-Pei/Border Collie mix and the male Gromit is a German Shepard mix. They are both great dogs ! This month we will also add a Guinea pig to the family.
Wow! This is an amazing give away. I have to wipe the drool a little bit, don’t want it getting on my keyboard.
I am an animal person, I don’t discriminate based on species. My first pet was a hamster named Woodie, and my brother had it’s sibling, named Dot. Actually, Woodie and Dot were mixed up at birth — Dot was the boy and Woodie was the girl, didn’t realize that until maybe six months after we got them. We can be forgiven though since we were only 6 and 8 respectively. After the hamsters, we upgraded to a dog, a rambuncious pomeranian who is amazing still growing strong at the ripe old age of 17 (no kidding, we got him when I was entering the forth grade as a two year old dog and I’m now almost two years out of college).
My lease right now doesn’t allow pets, but I’m considering moving so I can find a special feline or canine companion to fill that hole in my life.
In the fall, I adopted a beautiful Tortie kitten who I lovingly named Butternut (because I once had a dream that I had a kitten named Butternut). She was sick, though, and within a week I had to put her down. She had several infections and her body started shutting down…she had probably been sick for weeks by the time I adopted her. It broke my heart! I’ve been thinking lately about adopting another cat, but I’m giving myself some time to think about it.
Despite my love for cats, I think I’m really more of a dog person. I just know that I don’t have the time at this point in my life to give to a dog, and I certainly don’t have the space! Someday, though, when I have a bit of land, I’ll have a dog as my best friend!
No pets at the moment but I was lucky to have two amazing budgies/parakeets as a kid/teen. Thank you for the giveaway!
Oh no – don’t lure me into the spinning world! I’ve got too many hobbies already. But… can’t …. resist!
I’m totally a cat person. I have two in my tiny apartment and it’s a good thing I don’t have a house because I’d be one of those crazy cat ladies that rescues every stray in sight. My favorite part of the day is waking up with two cats snuggled up to me. The worst part of the day is trying to extract myself from such a happy place to go to work!
I’m definitely a dog lover but I surprised myself a couple of years ago by discovering that I really, really like parrots. Who knew?!
I’m a pet person. I grew up with two dogs, one of which is still with me. 5 guinea pigs, 4 hedgehogs and some hamsters over the years.
I love cats too, though I’ve never had one, my best friend growing up had three cats that I spent a lot of time around.
I’d love to live out in the country to take in strays and animals in need of rescuing (which I do do with hedgehogs).
Really, I LOVE animals.
I grew up with a constant stream of pets (cats, dogs, fish, parakeet, gecko, rabbit), but once I moved out on my own did not have any for years. But a month ago I took in a co-worker’s pair of ferrets as she had to move without them, and now I can’t imagine being without them. They combine the fun of dogs (wrestling, playtime, teaching tricks) with the ease of cats (litterbox= no walks in the freezing rain!). They’re adorable little weasels that really worm their way into one’s affections.
Oh wow, this is a great giveaway.
My family have always adopted Siamese cats and working dogs. The first was intentional, the second a bit of an accident: A family friend found a border collie wandering where she lived (which was pretty far away from anyone, or anything, else), he was young and in good shape, with a collar but no tags. She immediately tried to find the owners she thought would be on the hunt for him, he didn’t seem distressed at all. When no owners could be found she called vets to see if any recognized the dog, she tried putting ads in the paper, putting up signs, asking neighbors, leaving messages at pet stores, dog training schools, breeders, everywhere. During all this she had been packing to move and had an old and sickly cat. Unsure if the dog had had his shots, she got him a refrigerator box and some blankets, which she kept on her porch (luckily it was Summer). Everyday he’d follow her around while she did things outside and go for long walks in the woods, trotting down old stone walls. When she realized no one was going to claim the dog she started asking people at work if they wanted to adopt what she was pretty sure was a border collie. My dad was originally unsure, but after one visit with him everyone had fallen in love. He was a really handsome dog, with a very sweet face and his wall-walking enchanted us. He was indeed a border collie, a very brilliant dog who learned right from left, was brought up by *our* old, stern, but loving cat and never, ever forgot the woman who found him.
Since then we’ve adopted an English Shepard (or, collie dog), and two other border collies. The English Shepard and one border collie are still with us. They are kept inline by our current Siamese cat, who takes no nonsense from the girls, but can be found grooming the English Shepard when he thinks we don’t see him.
Our dog is named Marburg, after the Marburg virus, a relative of ebola. He’s a German shepherd-corgi-chow mix, which makes for a pretty interesting dog. Lying down, he looks like a German shepherd, but when he stands up on corgi legs, well, laughter often ensues.
I love all animals (yes even lizards and snakes although I’m not keen on touching them) but I am first and foremost a cat person. I love how they pick and choose who they love on their terms. You can’t buy a cat’s love that’s for sure. My husband on the other hand is a dog person…a big bouncy golden lab who loves everyone and just wants his belly rubbed!
Wow, awesome!
My cat Mycroft is an overweight orange cat. He’s named after Sherlock Holmes’ older brother who is very intelligent (moreso than Sherlock), but who is veeeeeeeeeeery lazy.
My cat has been trained. He knows when I want him to come, and generally will. He knows sit, sit pretty, touch it (with his nose), high five, up, and down. He knows what I want him to do and it’s certianly improved our communication. That doesn’t mean that he’ll always listen to me, but I know that he understands what I’m asking of him. And that’s one reason why I like him more than a dog!
Hi Susie – I’d just like to make a counter-offer and say that if anyone wins this from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and would like to sit with a teacher, to supplement what they learn from the book – give me a call and I’ll donate a free lesson with your hard-won spindle and fab fiber. C’mon Texans! Let’s show ‘em what we got!
You got yourself a deal Cindy!
The pet that owns me – Pansy, descended from a show-quality Persian and a neighborhood tomcat. My kids’ dogs also call my home their home. Pansy is not impressed with dogs, being an inferior species. I like all animals, including dogs.
We have three cats, all rescues. The oldest, a male, has claimed me as his favorite human. The only girl has claimed my husband, and the youngest cat claims anyone who walks in the door. My boy Z used to be an enormous linebacker kitty in his younger days and used to love pouncing on my yarn, spiders, or anything else that moved. But he’s lost a lot of weight in recent years and these days is just happy to have my lap on cold nights.
We have three cats (recently four–we miss you, Patches!). They’re indoor pets because we have a lot of foxes and coyotes here. Although we had dogs when I was a kid, I find that cats are lovely companion animals. They are cuddly and loving, and full of wacky antics, but they also like to just coexist peacefully with you and hang out. Cats make for a cozy house!
6 cats. All delightfully unique individuals.
El Guapo, supreme ruler of Planet Guapo and the mayor of the intersection of Highland Ave and North St.
Pudgy Smudgy, the relentless lap cat.
Troublesome McGee, the blue-eyed boy with no social skills.
Corkie the Gimp, who will not be touched but is heart-breakingly cute.
Little Egypt of the fabulous belly.
Tipitina, formerly of the lower 9th, a sweet little southern belle with ferocious claws. Will snuggle or maim according to mood.
Plus, I have two semi-permanent foster cats living in my workshop:
Baby Mamma, who came with 3 kittens and stayed on to nurse any foster kittens who needed her.
Miss Emmy, the scaredy cat.
And two more feral cats in my backyard:
Tuffy Biggs, the name says it all.
Grey Ghost. I think he and Tuffy are what is called “longtime companions”.
Actually, I’m pretty much an animal lover! Have always had dogs. When we had a few acres we had horses, cats, a goose, bunnies (1 Angora – but I knew nothing of spinning then!), chickens and even 2 peacocks that had gotten loose from somewhere! I truly miss those days.
We’ve got a cat and a fish. The cat was free, the fish we bought. I like animals and all, but I have recently realized that they can be rather expensive. We spent over $600 on our “free” cat!
I’m an every kind of animal person. Currently I have 3 dogs, a cat, a bird, and a fish. in the past I have also had horses and sheep. I miss the horses and sheep so much. Some day I will have them again. But in the mean time, reading your blog makes me miss the flock a little less.
Well, we have a cat. Her name is Max, and she’s a pain. I’m much more a dog person but they’re so much more high maintenance. We have a big yard but it’s not fenced in and on a busy road so we can’t get a dog until then. I’m thinking lab… they’re so good with kids. That’s my goal… lab… someday. Until then I’ll keep yelling at Max to get off the table, out of the sink, and stop peeing on the floor.
My family has always had dogs. We either had a Welsh Terrier or Airedales when I was growing up. They are so cute – they end up looking like teddy bears as they’re hair gets longer! We don’t have a dog right now as I have a toddler and an infant, but when we are ready for a pet, it will definitely be a dog!!
I have a mostly stray cat that my husband adopted named Mooch. I resisted initially, worried about being able to take care of her and about my allergies.
Well, I’m glad that my husband couldn’t resist the big grey and white fluff ball who has learned to bang on windows when she wants in. She’s very good company for me when I’m lonely and great at distracting me when I’m sad.
Somehow she’s accumulated nicknames. ‘Mistress of Destruction’, ‘Queen of Chaos,’ ‘She of bad timing,’ and ‘Fuzzy vibrating heating pad that doesn’t make me sick.’ She’ll knock anything off of a flat surface she wants to sleep on. Anything soft must be kneaded, including me. However, soft things aren’t for sleeping on usually. She’s an odd one.
I wish she liked being brushed because she leaves clumps of long white and gray hair all over my house that seem tempting.
Not all of her nicknames are flattering I realize. However, both my husband and I adore her. She’s really his cat but sometimes she shows odd moments of affection towards me even when he’s awake.
She’s been a wonderful addition to our lives. I may wheeze more but I also smile more. I even more more to let her in and out. She’s wonderful.
Our pets….when we were single (before children) we had cats. Charcoal (all black) and Hibachi ( a grey kitten that was supposed to stay gray, but had stripes that were hidden by her size.
After children, we went with dogs. Our first dog was a wonderful Golden named Hucklebeari. For a few years, Huck and my son were the same size. Huck would sit and Greg would stand up next to him and by eye to eye with the dog. Huck was the pillow, blanket and best friend to my son. When Huck passed away, we got Kodak – another Golden. Kodak today is our best helper dog, closing doors that need closing, closing drawers in the kitchen left open and most importantly chasing away wild animals near the house – bear, deer and rabbits. The vast amount of shedding is worth the companionship any day!
I’m an every animal person (kinda goes with being a vet tech)
Seuss is a Congo African Grey parrot-17 years old and my baby! Gris Gris is a Timneh African Grey, 12 years old and since I owned her parents, she hatched in my hand and I hand fed her from second 1. Holmes is a 17 year old Meyers parrot, and there are 3 cockatiels (Riley, Macy and Beemer) and 2 zebra finches (Stop and Start). Leia is a lab/pit/whippet mix and the best dog in the world. Loki is a red husky mix and 3 years old. Ethan is an Abysinnian, 18 years old, Wench is an 8 year old long hair cat, Merlin is a 4 year old tortoiseshell, and Fezzik is a 9 month old long hair grey tabby–maybe with some Maine coon in him, since he is growing and growing!
I used to breed parrots, and had about 15 more. I’m at my limit now as far as animals–I only have so much time, lap space, and food budget!
I am a bunny person. Margaret says I was a bunny
in my former life. Unfortunately I have never had a bunny. I have all sorts of bunnies of the stuffed animal kind, though. (baby lambs are also a big weakness)
Horses! Not that I ever had one, though. Mom and dad
We have had three birds: two parakeets and a little peach-faced lovebird who thought she was a little human being – she was hand trained so she loved to come out and chew newspaper, land and perch on the newspaper edge as dad read it, or sit on our shoulders
of course said no way when I asked for one when I was little
and chew on hair. Or she would wander along the neckline of your shirt and then before you could stop her, she would flip herself into your shirt and get lost in it! She loved to be under things, like a newspaper tent.
She was so cute!
OMG! What a tremendous giveaway!
We have one cat. We saved his life while his owner was away so when she returned she gave him to us. He has brought so much love into our home that we consider ourselves blessed to have him.
Oh my gosh! I would LOVELOVELOVE to win this!!!
I’m a complete and utter cat person. I have two of them and would love to have four, but I am realistic about the space I have and that they need. One of my cats is very smart — she responds to several different commands, including kiss, sit, please (beg), and lie down. The other cat is pretty.
I also have a lot of dust bunnies.
My parents have a sweet little misbehaved yorkie called Teddy. They love overseas so I don’t get to see him much but I really miss him, they got him a year or two before I left home. I can’t wait till I’m able to get my own dog but now isn’t the right time. I’m definitely a dog person though.
My email isn’t “creatrlvr” for nothing!! I currently have 6 cats, most of whom we rescued. 1 dog, 100 gallon salt water fish tank, koi/goldfish pond. We also have had 3 ferrets, 20+ pet rats ( yes on purpose) a rabbit, snake and one more dog. Sharing the house with the pets are my 3 teenage boys and my very patient and understanding husband!
So I have no preference, I just am a creature lover!!
I have a very sweet and social flock of chickens that I adore! We hope to get a dog in the future also.
Right now, I am obssessed with all things alpaca and dream of when I can have a few of my own. I have had cats and dogs as pets forever. My current dog, Java, is a mix chow-husky which my husband found roaming aroun streets of the Bronx near his office. We kept her when no one responded to our posters. We named her Java because Mike was having a cup of coffee when he found her. She is now over 15 years old – yes 15- somewhat deaf and blind but in great shape. People warned us about her breeds being difficult but she has been the sweetest dog ever.
I have one cat, Anachsunamun (aka Suna or Momma) who is in some ways an evil entity in my house. She’s the reason I can’t sleep in on the weekends, but oh my GOD does she love my husband. He’s like the Cat Whisperer or something, me she barely tolerates. She totally snowballed me when I picked her out at the shelter.
In reality I’m more of a small dog person. My parents have a long hair toy chihuahua that looks like a Papillon. She’s the light of our lives, I call her the Alien Ambassador of Love & Joy.
We are doggie people. Our current group who allow us to live with them are our old girl Janis, who is 14 years old with a bit of a question mark for heritage, and two miniature Schnauzers – better known as The Terrors – who are called Weiner and Schnitzel.
I have a hard time keeping the number to three since I have a soft-spot for every unloved pup I see on Petfinder. My husband once said “It’s me or the dogs!” and I said not to make me opt for such an easy choice! LOL.
I love Labs. We have a black lab named Morewood and I am rehabbing my grand-puppy Mr. Eko. He is a 7 month old yellow lab.
I used to have a bunny named Aesop. Somehow the name never really stuck, though, and I just called him “Bunny” most of the time. We had the same color hair/fur, so we matched.
He died on Christmas Eve three years ago when my brother’s dog got to him. I miss him very much.
I am definitely a cat person! We have a 15 year old cat named Neil Young who is smarter than your average cat. He even washes his paws in his water bowl after using his litter box. He is very observant and we believe he has watched us wash our hands after going to the bathroom and picked it up from us. Of course, this means we have to change the water in his bowl several times a day…
I’ve got two cats, one is an older half siamese who is just beautiful and quite large as cats go. His name is Spocklet. The other is a fluffball of a tortoise shell who pretty much loves to do whatever would be considered annoying. Her name is Sandy, but has from the time she was tiny been known as “the Doodle”.
I got my little rat terrier, Ripley, when I decided to leave the Vineyard. He was my constant buddy as I moved to a new location all by myself. When I was single, he slept under the covers with me, and when I moved in with my now-husband, he became best friends with my husband’s black lab. He was recently hit by a car, and I miss him so, so much.
Wow, what a great give away! And I get to talk about the cats! I have 5 cats, all rescue, 4 of them former feral cats or kittens. All love living in the house, rather than outside in the cold and rain. All but one have decided that being a lap cat has its perks. I’d love to bring a dog into the mix now that I have a small house. I tried this over the holidays in Dec but the rescue beagle mix didn’t understand that the cats really didn’t want to play with him! I found him a great home with another beagle his age and a big fenced back yard to run and play in. Guess I might just be a cat only person!
I have a big fat maine coon cat named Gracie-she thinks she is a dog-we call her cat-dog-she loves to jump in the bath and hang out in the tub even when there is no water in it-she’s strange but lovable-
I always grew up being a cat person, but my first serious relationship changed me into being a dog person as well. In fact my mom started going out with someone who had a dog and the next thing I knew we had 3 dogs in the house, the first one, a year old one and a 6 month old puppy who is all mine. I wouldn’t know what to do without them and the puppy is sitting next to me growling out the window and barking at whatever is out there with his little puppy I’m not sure what is going on bark right now
Oh Beth! I am so sorry. You know I recently went through the same thing with my dog Biscotti and I know how painful it is.
We have Buster the beagle from a shelter. He follows me everywhere. He won’t play bite my husband – just me. Must be some kind of love. My cat Miriam, is 19 and is a white Persian. I have needle felted with her hair – works pretty good!!
Talking about my cat is easy. Her name is Seli and she’s quite the little princess. I have accepted that my role in life is to serve her and I do it happily. She demands to snuggle/cuddle so there are some great perks for me. She’s definitely my girl.
I am currently not allowed to have any pets (rental agreement), but I’ll tell you about my favorite pet. His name was Envy the green eyed monster, and he was a Maine Coon Cat. He was big and goofy and very trainable; we taught him to fetch and to jump on his little stand when we snapped (and then was lavished with yummy treats). One day, when I get a house, I will get a new kitty and a big dog…
I am a total dog person but somehow I have ended up with two cats. Miao Tse-Tung is a 3 legged fluff ball who loves to play with my knitting while I’m knitting. Sergei Purrivich is an 18 year old love muffin who loves my fiancee’s lap more than anything.
I’m a dog, rabbit and horse person. I have three dogs, two mutts Roxy and Crash, and a JRT named Harley. I also have a mini rex bunny named Buster. No horses of my own but I used to ride alot with a friend when I was younger.
I never thought I’d be a cat person- I grew up with dogs and have always wanted one but haven’t lived in an apartment that allows dogs. So a few years ago my boyfriend convinced me to get a kitten and I fell in love with cats. My cat, Clover, is three years old. She acts tough all day and hides out away from us, but at night she’ll always hop right up on the sofa to watch TV and get petted.
We have a golden retriever named Winnie. One Halloween we put a red shirt on her – Winnie the Pooh! She is sweet and loveable and wants desperately to be a lap dog.
My family has always had cats, so naturally when I moved away from home I got one of my own. Cleopatra is 9 yrs old this month, and although she’s slightly pear-shaped, I don’t hold that against her (It happens to all middle-aged women, right?) She recently had some health problems that required surgery, but she seems to be getting back to normal now.
I’ve always had a cat around, but we’re back into buns since we moved to MA. Mississippi Buttercup was our first (succumbed to an infection 4 years ago, sniff) and now we have Dakota May Day, our albino cuddler. ~H
I have a black and white dressed-for-dinner cat named Tom who very bravely made the journey to the U.S. with me from Ireland two years ago. Since then he’s experienced temperature extremes he never imagined were possible and encountered all manner of wildlife I’m sure he never saw in Dublin – deer, raccoons, skunks (!), coyotes … the list goes on. Oddly enough the thing which seemed to rattle him the most last year was the snow – it really had him startled (and not a little frustrated too since it limited his ability to move around easily outside!) He’s taken it more in his stride this year, but I don’t think he’ll ever really grow to like it.
Tom is an odd mix of independent and affectionate. He’s very much an outdoor cat and always strides out with the most extraordinary sense of purpose – ‘things to do, people to see’! When he’s inside, though, and if I’m up and about and not providing him with a handy lap, he has a particular meow that lets me know that cuddles are required and would I please just sit down for a few minutes. When I do, he’s all affection and love for about 15-20 minutes, at which point he’s suddenly done, and jumps down (I have a feeling this may have to do with the fact that he’s a large cat, and so doesn’t really have enough room to stretch out on my lap). He is, generally speaking, a reasonably obedient cat, though I have to admit to one horrendous mistake I made in his training. When we first moved, I watched diligently for any signs that he was about to start spraying around the house. We had no trouble at all for at least six months, but just as I had decided that maybe this wasn’t going to be a problem with Tom, it started. Every time I caught him at it, I dutifully gave him a bit of a smack (not too hard!) and threw him outside. Well, he now sprays solely as a way to let me know that he wants/needs to outside NOW. Sigh…full credit to him for having made the association – it’s my fault for not realizing that for this cat, being thrown out was not really much of a punishment!
What a generous give-away! This book is on my wish list . . . and MVFF/HVFF cormo roving? Sigh.
Many years ago, I fell in love with Australian Shepherds. Even though they’re often high energy dogs, both of mine have functional “off” buttons. Several years ago, I experienced a rough year medically and my shadow Aussie gave me more comfort than I could have predicted. I think he was a bit disappointed when my energy returned and we stopped taking that daily nap together.
I’ve only got one pet of my own, but my family’s always been good at sharing pets, so it’s like I have a cat and a part-time dog.
My cat’s name is Malcolm, he’s named after the captain from Firefly (best tv show ever) because he’s a troublemaker and yet somehow completely loveable. He’s even got a little bit of a brown coat, he’s a tabby and his coat is brownish tan with black and gray stripes. Also he likes to smuggle things out of one place and hide them in another (things like my yarn).
My part-time dog is really my parents’ dog, but when I was in school and home visiting/spending the summer she became partly mine. So I still sometimes go home to walk her and carry her around the house (she weighs about 50 lbs, so no one else is willing to pick her up and lug her around, but she loves it). Her name is Brandi (I petitioned for Brandy with a “y” because I’m not a fan of “i” at the end of a name, but that’s me). She’s so named because she’s that beautiful red-brown-gold color (she’s a redbone coonhound) and because she came to us at Christmas when we eat my mom’s fruitcake which is SOAKED in brandy.
I’m hoping that soon we can get Mal a friend, because he’s lonely being the only cat.
No pets – but I feed my neighbor’s fish when she goes out of town.
This isn’t a second entry! Just a PS. on my previous comment!
I forgot to say thank you for the wonderful and generous giveaway!
I also forgot to say that I’m Muppetfeet on Ravelry.
We have 2 pets – a cat and a dog. And they hate each other! They are both rescue pets – Miss Kitty showed up almost 5 years ago, hurt and just crying to come in the house. Luke, our 60 lb. hound mix, came to our house over 2 years ago from the SPCA. Due to their mutual hatred, Miss Kitty is our upstairs pet and Luke is our downstairs pet. If the lion can lie down with the lamb, why can’t the cat and dog get along?
Well, my pet story is kind of a sad one. I used to have a cat. Misty came to live with me in 1997. Before husband and kids. My oldest was born in 2000, followed by a sister and brother. All 3 of them loved Misty. Misty adored them, let them sit on him, pet him harder than would be acceptable unless you are a toddler, the whole 9 yards. Then the kids and I moved out, into Grandma & Grandpa’s house. Grandma lives in terror of cats, so Misty went to a very nice home about 5 hours away at a friend of a friend. My 2 older children still cry sometimes because they miss their kitty. It’s hard to explain to little kids that sometimes things don’t work out how you planned. We plan to get another cat in the future…. We also love looking at horses and my girls would own one of them if they could. (If I can’t handle owning a cat, you can imagine how I feel about owning a horse!). Thanks for a great giveaway- I can’t wait to get my spring share!
I’ve had a variety of pets over the years, from snakes and mice to a rescued Quaker parrot that talked, but I was first and ever a cat person. My two cats Biz and Muse are very dear to me. And though Chipotle is my favorite goat, Sweet William is my pet – he even walks on a leash.
Oh pets! My favorite thing-even beyond knitting. I am an animal-lover who is currently completing pre-requisite classes and planning to apply to Vet School this summer. I have one dog- Belle- who is probably a shepherd/collie mix… maybe. She’s 5 years old and she is my best pal. I went through a hard time several years ago and she is what got me out of bed every day. I could neglect myself, but not her. She also helped me meet one of my best friends. We had our dogs in the same obedience class. Every morning I spend about 10 minutes laying in bed with Belle and petting her and just getting myself ready to start my day.
I grew up on a small dairy farm as an only child, so the animals were my playmates! We have always had cats, dogs as well as fish and the occassional guineau pig or parrot (or iguana, boa) Right now we have an old girl Golden named Ocean Myst, she moved back to the mainland with us. We also have been adopted by a stray cat whom we named Stalker Kitty as she used to have a habit of pushing her face against the screens to look in the windows. With such a generous giveaway i think your well on your way to breaking your comments goal! This would be put to good use as i am still perfecting my spinning, self taught so visual would be helpful…and my teen daughter has recently expressed an interest!!
What a giveaway!!!
I’m a dog nut – we have three. Boomer the Brittany (7 yrs), a hunting school flunky, was given to us when his previous owner figured out that Boom liked to play with the birds instead of staying on point and waiting for the gun shot (I guess he almost got shot a couple of times). He’s my dorky boy full of love and energy.
Annabelle (10yrs) is my baby cocker-mix girl and was rescued from a no-kill shelter. Someone found her in a ditch with her babies after they were newly born. The babies were adopted out but no one wanted Annie because she was so timid. When hubby and I saw her she came right to us, apparently the only people she actually ever ran to, and I held her face in my hands and looked into her eyes and told her she was going home. She is a sweet, kind little girl who loves her best buddy Snickers.
Snickers (11 yrs) is our first pooch and a terrier mix. After hubby and I got our home we of course needed a dog. The local mall was having a pet adoption event and the local Animal Shelter had a few dogs there, one of which was Snickers. When we walked up to him he just leaned on the cage – all he wanted was to be petted. We couldn’t resist and adopted him on the spot. I remember that day like yesterday, it was a happy day – our home was complete.
So yes, I’m a dog nut and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Definitely a dog lover. In NYC like many other commenters– My husband’s family has Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and I’m sure that’s what we’ll get when we leave the city! Such a sweet temperment.
Two puppies, a mixed breed and a greyhound! But more to come: goats, chicken and maybe a llama!
You have the best contests! I love reading the comments on them!
I have four cats, Tarod, Asi, Arioch & Timmy. Asi gets all the visitor attention because he’s mostly bengal leopard and is a striking kitty, but they’re all sweethearts.
You are so sweet to give away a prize like that. I’ve been thinking about spinning for years.
I have two kitties now and have had dogs in the past. My cats like to steal any balls of yarn that they can get their paws on. They also curl up on afghans in progress. It’s so hard to turn an afghan with a large cat sleeping on it.
I am an animal person…species doesn’t seem to matter. I have one dog and 6 (yes 6) cats. All any one has to say is the dreaded “P” (pound) word and I don my super hero cape. I am a sucker for saving the furry friends from destruction. As my dog indicates, she is a people too.
I am dying to learn how to spin!
We have chickens. We can’t have dogs, my husband is deathly allergic to cats) the chickens were for eggs but are our girls (the cocklebottoms, izzy and lala are the big girls; the mcgees, Nono, peeps, and Squirrly are the little girls). My husband is the chicken daddy. He does the coop upkeep and serves as rooster. His favorite is squirrly. We love, love them (and their eggs)
(my ultimate goal:four sheep, some goats, a cow, two pigs, nine dogs, chickens. Add bees and a trio of hedgehogs)
Okay, this is a tough question. I’ll seperate it into indoor and outdoor. Indoor animals include 3 dogs (Raven a Schipperke, Rosie a rescue aussie and Spring my Border Collie) 5 cats (Henry, Rikki, Scrambles, Chaos and The Monster), 2 doves and Banshee my African Grey Parrot whom I have had for over 20 years. Outside are my barn cats (Bilbo, Sam, Frodo, Merry and Pippin). Pippin, who was a frightened blur running away when she first came, is now really more of a house cat and often sleeps on my bed–super affectionate (who says feral cats always stay feral? Tell that to Pippin–if you can be heard over her purring)(she is here at my elbow “helping” me write this). Then we have 4 geese, 5 ducks and a few more chickens than I want to try to count. In the barn there are some sheep, goats and llamas who guard my flocks (I won’t try to name them all at the moment). Two of our 5 horses are rescues including a lovely sweet old Thourobred who appears to have done some track time. I guess I can’t be called anything but a “critter person.”
I have a dog and a cat. I don’t want to hurt Nasha’s feelings (jack russell) but I do tend to favor cats! Menemsha came to us one cold November day when my husband, Jonathan, was on the docks in Menemsha. He saw the tiny kitten on the dock and went to him. The kitten proceeded to fall in the channel and was scooped up by Jonathan. I think he would take the cat over me if he had to make a choice. Menemsha has been part of our family for a bit over two years now and he and Nasha have a ball together!
Hi, I would love to learn how to spin. I went to my first flock and fiber festival last year (Oregon.) I walked around in a daze of fiber and yarn all day. I will go with my daughter next year (without my 3 yr. old son,) and play more. Thanks for letting me enter.

I’m a long-time cat person, and I have two at the moment, Dexter and Lucy–an entirely new cat family in the last couple of years. Seymour and Sara, who were with me for 19 and 16 years, respectively, passed away within a year of each other. Seymour was with me for half of my life–had him from 19-38. I have a dog, as well–Sam. He’s the only dog I’ve ever had. I’m not a dog person, just a Sam person. And I once had two iguanas. Most pets at once: three cats, one dog, one iguana.
I have a giant dog (a leonberger) named Moose who I love to death and two cats who have been around for so long (15 or 16 years) that we have forgotten life without them. We also have some fish and the youngest child is wanting something else “of his very own.” His ideas range from bird to lizard to hamster…
I am definately a dog person! I feel like I have a “dog ranch”. We live out in the country and on a culdesac too…so lots of dogs get dumped out here…..so we have 14 right now. 4 of them are my house babies……they are: Red, a miniature daushund, Bitsy, a Jack Russell, Buddie, a Rat Terrier (my biggest baby), and Hondo, a cattledog, husky mix…he is actually the youngest……Hondo and Buddie are very jealous of each other around me. These are our “children” right now…and they are lots of fun….most of the time.
Swoon! What a great giveaway! We have a fish named Fire that is on his last legs. Other than that, I like other people’s pets, I’m just not keen on getting my own. I don’t have the time right now that I would want to devote to a pet. Someday I want an alpaca.
I have three gorgeous standard poodles: Tori, my white poodle, is six years old and very much the big sister: serious, responsible, hard-working and in charge. The next one, Alice, is black and a typical middle child: easy-going, compliant, eager to please, and gets along with everyone. The littlest one, Lucy, is clearly the baby of the family. She’s demanding, self-centered, and endlessly entertaining. I love them all!
I have two male Keeshonden, one we have had since he was a puppy and one is a rescue. I also have a female cat that I rescued off the street over 8 years ago. 3 tropical fishtanks round out my zoo here in central Ohio!!
Wow, what a fabulous giveaway! It IS big. Have you gone mad? It’s big.
I have two fat, lazy cats who just basically eat and sleep all day, but they’re sweet. I also have two kangaroosweetieloverbunnyheads, well, ok they’re dogs. One is a black lab mix named Mabel, and the other is a Greyhound named Pearl. Mabel’s nickname is Roni, as in Mabelroni, the San Francisco treat (sung to the tune of the Rice-a-roni commercial). Miss Pearl’s nickname is Fancy, well, just because she is a fancypants.
Thanks for all you do!
We have a pain in the butt boy kitty who just happens to be named Lillith (long story)
And I have 4 loving little doggies! Two half poodle/chihuahuas, one 1/4 poodle/chihuahua 1/2 boston terrier and one full blood shitzu
Well, I’d say I am a dog-person. I had a lab-mix puppy that I got in high school and loved for almost 15 years. She moved with me when I got married and my DH lover her too. She passed away right after our first baby (of the human variety) was born and we have not chosen a new pet yet. I’d love to have another dog sooner rather than later, but we have decided to wait until our girls are old enough to not get knocked over or batted in the face with a happy tail.
I really would like another pet so badly that I have considered getting a cat. My girls would love a cat, but the thought of rumpled, cat saliva felted yarn has kept that from happening.
I am XXXXXcrossing everythingXXXXX hoping to win this giveaway!!!
Due to allergies and germophobia, my brother and I were only allowed to have goldfish growing up. But we treated our goldfish very well and they all lived to be several years old.
Our goldfish were named after famous physicists. It’s one of the side-effects of having a dad who is a physicist and a nerdy brother who later majored in physics. Over the years we had Einstein, Feynman, Mandelbrot, Ising, Fermi, Ulam, Heisenberg (we used to joke that we never knew exactly where he was!), Schrodinger, Murray Gell-Mann and Neils Bohr.
But we also had a fish named Cookie for almost 10 years. I can’t think of any famous physicists named Cookie. Mom says that I named him. I’m no physicist.
I am an animal person, meaning I love all animals. As a child we always had cats and dogs. As I married a dog-hater we have only had cats, but what cats!
And my son has had snakes and a hamster – not at the same time! Now it is fish that has his great interest, and I go along with that, even though I get claustrophobic when I watch them for too long
Hi there!
The most charming blog! I love everything: the sheep, goats, dogs…you name it…I love it! And the most important: I really get a good feeling inside when I visit this blog…who can ask for more?
love from Aputsiaq/Mette in Denmark :O)
I LOVE talking about my pets. So I love this give away for that reason, and because of the lovely prize, of course! I have a cat, named Boom Boom (he’s a rather large cat!) and two dogs–Chloe, a 4 year old black lab, and Rufus, a one year old pointer mix who we just got last week! We adopted both of the dogs from rescue organizations and oddly enough, they both were originally from Tennessee! I recently posted pics of the two cuties playing together here: http://www.writerbug.blogspot.com.
I have 2 cats, who I often refer to as my babies. I got my first cat shortly after moving into my new apartment after college (about 3 years ago). It was the first time I was living totally on my own, and I realized very quickly just how quiet it was. I was used to living with several people and several cats (my family has cats, and my college roommates had cats), so about two weeks after moving I couldn’t take the quiet anymore and went to the local animal shelter. There I found an incredibly friendly little kitty who just had to come home with me! I named him Dobby after the house elf in Harry Potter because when he was little his eyes and ears were enormous (they are still a little too big for his head, lol), and my Mom said he looked like a house elf! About a year later I adopted my second kitty to keep Dobby company. Winky (named after another house elf) is entirely black except for a few white hairs in her ears. She was very skittish when I first got her, but has now realized the wonder of cuddles. She tends to follow me around the house “eeep”ing in an attempt to get me to pet her. I love them both soooo much, and they certainly keep things interesting!
Right now we are a dog-rabbit-guinea pig-budgie family, but at heart I am a cat person since I grew up with several cats in the house at any one time. Sadly, our cat ran away when the dog came along, so I’m bereft of a cat for now.
I have 2 cats that live with my parents, whom I miss all the time. It is sort of made up by the 2 cats my best friend has. One of them is considered my boyfriend. His name is Rev. He really likes cheese. He also really likes it when there are guests in the house because he knows one of them will give him s treat from their plate.
Right now my boyfriend wants a dog and i kinda want a pot bellied pig and if i actually had a yard I would totally want a CHICKEN!
Your giveaways are awesome! I love them!
Hi, at the moment I have only 1 dog, a beagle mix, named Youkilis, 2 1/2 years old. His big brother, Clydemore passed away last spring, sadly. This coming spring we’ll get a new companion for Youk.
Also coming this spring are a new round of chickens, both laying hens (last years layers had a bad bout with a weasel, boo hiss) and broilers. We’ll also get a couple of piglets after Memorial Day, they do a great job of turning over and fertilizing my garden, they rotate every year. And, hopefully, if my investigative powers are good, I’ll be getting some sheep soon. Narrowing down my choice of breed and looking into fencing now.
I had cats for 30 years before I discovered that I’m allergic to them, so had to give them up, but I can breathe now, and that’s good.
The only pet I’ve ever had was a goldfish I won at the junior high school fair. It only lived a couple of days…perhaps because my brother named it Sushi…
The spinning stuff looks lovely!
WE have a lovely cat named Siksika. I grew up with small dogs (daschund and chichihua), and though I love them, they are more work than I’m interested in. I’m also afraid of big dogs, so having a snuggly cat is just the right speed for me.
2 pet tarantulas. They will climb on you if you stay still.
i have been avoiding this like the plague but if you must temp the gods of fate…eventually i will learn but i am thinking another 10 years when the kids are teenagers. love to learn though!!! it could be your fault!!!
We have a six year old male Jack Russell Terrier named Sparky Joe. We call him Joe for short. He likes to roam the neighborhood if he gets off his leash. We may have to go over 5 miles to pick him up when he is in of his roving moods. He is a very friendly dog and loves to be petted. We have a heating pad and light bulb in his dog house to keep him warm. He doesn’t like staying inside of the house. He is only spoiled a little. My father raised Jack Russell Terriers before his death in 2005. My mom and I kept his last male dog Joe as a pet. I would love to try my hand at spinning.
Thank you for all of these giveaways.

I have two cats who are so nice. Frank and Matilda have been pure joy.
Wow – you are not kididng BIG!
I am totally a cat person – though there have been many dogs I have thoroughly enjoyed! Right now I have about 50 pounds of cat – (or three if you are counting heads!) One of my big boys clocks in at 24 pounds – Bat, aka FattyBatty. We love him, he loves to purr, sit on laps and enjoys swimming in his water bowl. He also particularly enjoys cramming himself into small cardboard boxes so he sort of billows out over the top, we call it “muffining”!
We have 2 calico kitties, Meadie and Kendall, an old mutt named Jake – who can’t see or hear very well and forgets that he just ate so he has to be fed again and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi that is just the best little dog. I’ll bet he’d love to help with your flock!
I think it’s safe to say that I’m a dog person. I’ve had a few pets in my life (Dogs, hamsters, rabbits, fish), and I’ve loved them all, but dogs top my list.
Our family dog, Trey, is a character. He’s some sort of collie boxer mix that the family jokes could also be part human, deer, and cat… and my mom is pretty convinced that he’s my grandpa reincarnated. He ate half of his tail because he caught it while chasing it, he’s very particular about how he eats his food (and exactly how many imes he paws the ground before he digs in, and at 5 years old (his birthday was last week!) he still pees whenever he gets excited. What I love most about him is his personalty, you can tell his full spectrum of emotions by the looks he gives you, when I’m sad he cuddles with me, when I need to wake up he climbs onto my bed. All round, he’s a great dog.
Sadly I can’t bring him to school with me, even though every time I go home I ask him “Hey Trey, wanna go to college with me?” and I know his answer is yes. So while away from home I settle for petting EVERY dog I see someone walking on campus…
…I love my puppy.
I’ve always been a cat person and I do own a cat now. However, I have had a chinchilla for about 8 years now and he is the love of my life. He’s charming, soft, and friendly.
wow, I’d love to win this. I have 4 cats right now. I had a maine coon named Stephen for many years & was devstated when he died at 22. After several years I decided to take the plunge again but I wanted a pair so they could keep each other company while I was at work. I went online & picked littermates from a local shelter & drew there in the middle of a blizzard to pick them up. When I got there I fell in love with 2 diferent kitties. They were littermates but born & captured feral. So I decided to get a 3rd cat, an older housecat to help teach these 2 how to act inside & I chose an cat, who was 12 yrs, which was dumped due to her stomach issues. I took her to the vet & she just has a sensitive stomach & that is easily fixed with the right food. I didn’t plan on any other cats but abou 6 months later a co-worker was going to have her cat, who was 5, put to sleep because he didn’t get along with their other pets. I took him & now I can’t imagine my life without any of them. Even though I’m unemployed right now. & everyone tells me to get rid of them to save on money, there is NO way that is gong to happen. Thanks for letting me share.
I grew up with both cats and dogs. Got married to a cat hater, so had two dogs who both lived long lives 14 and 16 years. Went two years with no animals until I talked cat hating husband into two kittens. He was hooked, one year later we adopted two more kittens. Last week we lost one of our 1 1/2 year old fur babies very suddenly. Within the week my husband (the cat hater) adopted a nine month old kitten, who we today think might be pregnant, OMG…keep me in your thoughts!!
We have a parakeet (who we adopted when his owner moved cross-country) and a guinea pig. They are the prince and princess of the house. My daughters adore them and want to learn all about caring for them so that someday they can have bigger animals…like a horse.
I would love to learn to spin and make all the fantastic yarns I have seen…and to scared to spend the money on..I could watch a spinner for hours it is so calming and god knows I need calming…. I have a deployed son in Iraq, of course if I ever won this my family would surley pick on me…they are all city slickers I am the only outcast to live in a small country town in NH
I love your give aways and I will post it on my blog for you now
Suzanne
What a wonderful giveaway! Thanks for offering. it.
My pets are a group of unusual critters.
I have a neurotic dog named Ellie. She’s incredibly smart, but she greatly dislikes ceiling fans and spoons. She even has a love-hate relationship with her bowl…since it’s shiny and spoonshaped.
Next is the cat. She’s tiny, fluffy, and slightly senile. We rescued her from a family of three cats so she hates other cats. She lacks depth perception, so she’s unable to tell that pictures of cats aren’t cats. She’ll spit and yowl at any image of a cat. She’s also very cuddly and gets very depressed if we’re out of the house for long or she doesn’t get the attention she deserves.
Then come the piggies. I have two guinea pigs. Both are rescue girls and they both have their own personality. One is fat, laid back, and cuddly, an the other is very shy but exceptionally joyful. They definitely know they’ve been rescued.
I’m a cat person. I have two right now, Trixie and Friskie. Trixie is 8 years old and Friskie is her adopted baby who is almost 1. Someone set him off in front of our house as a tiny kitten who didn’t even know how to eat. He cried and hid for two days before we could catch him. Then when we gave him food, he cried as he ate. It was pitiful. He was probably grieving for his mama. Once Trixie snuggled him up, he was fine. He absolutely adores her. He’s bigger than her already but still likes to snuggle up. Its so cute.
Wonderful giveaway. I’d love to learn to spin.
we have 2 older dogs- a hound mix named Opie and a husky mix named Vida. 16 & 14 yrs. and they still think they are puppies!
Personally, I’m a cat person, but my husband’s allergies dictate otherwise. For now, we have 2 leopard geckos, whic are cat-like in their stalking techniques! Until we’ve got a house with a fenced in yard, a doggie will have to wait…
We have 18 koi in our pond in the back yard. They all have names.
When I married my hubby he had a rat terrier named Shelby. We got another rattie about 18 months ago; who´s name is Iris. We are a dog family for sure since we have allergies to most other furry animals by one person or another.
I would love to have a bigger dog one day. I was raised with labs. For now I´ll settle for smaller ones since we live in a small space.
P.S. Do you ever send out yarn samples? I´m just dying to touch your yarn.
I have a border collie, who really should never been sold as a pet. She’s given herself jobs (like barking when the phone rings – for some reason I have a hard time hearing it – and not because of the barking) that do help. I also have a mutt who is the sweetest dog ever – she was a rescue. And a cat – who is now 10 pounds! He was only 1 pound when my co-worker rescued him from a dumpster with his litter mates – only he and one other kitten survived. And all of my pets are great with the baby – even the cat. (We joke he as species confusion and thinks he’s a dog.)
Unfortunately, my family are pet owner wantabes but can’t due to allergies. We have tried various pets and my poor son is allergic to them. It is sad because he would just love a pet and the worst part is his brother can’t have a pet because of his brother’s allergies. If I could have a pet it would be a cat.
Oh gee, I’ve been wanting to try spinning but I haven’t had the moola for the investment.
I was born in a household with a dog, but when she died, we got a cat, that somehow multiplied into two cats, and three bunnies, and a crapload of fish.
After years of cat-loving, I realized recently (after trying to drop a dog several feet in the air from my arms) that I have forgotten how to be a dog person!
I am a full-blown cat lover – they are always soft and fluffy, they don’t need to be walked, they give you loads of loving without bugging you, and their fur smells yummy.
Kitties! Nom nom nom.
I grew up with dogs and cats (and the occasional rabbit), but I am totally a cat person. My old fatcat Kiwi turned 15 last year, and I’ve had her since she was a wee kitten. She’s even helped me convince my boyfriend (who has never had a pet) that cats are awesome!
The only thing that I love more than the prospect of this very very exciting give-away, is my pooch – Lily the 11 yr old Boston Terrier. She is currently sucking on a stuffed toy. I’ve always considered myself more of a dog person than a cat person, but I can’t help but wonder what my friends’ persian cats’ fur would look like if I won this drop spindle. Spin-able pet fur might sway me to cats from dogs… then again I could always adopt a pekingese.
Great giveaway. Such a temptress!
I live with my parents and have a cat and a goldfish. I went away to England for a year and my cat moved into my bedroom, sleeping on my bed and burrowing herself into my covers. I came home in July to find a carpet of cat hair and dirt blanketing my duvet cover and a cat who didn’t remember who I was. That’s gratitude for you!
Can’t wait to own some sheep of my own!
Our family loves big dogs, mastiffs especially. Although we have a soft spot for our departed Gizmo, the St.Bernard. We are currently waiting until we can get a home, a 2nd store apt is not where an english mastiff would be best suited and then we can’t wait to check out the local mastiff rescue. I still have an inkling for a teacup pig and maybe even my own sheep some day (trust me this is big dreaming).
As a graduate student, I’ve spent much of the last several years in dorms or busy. In that time, I sadly developed an allergy to my first love – cats – but have become the caretaker of a quite interesting beta fish.
His name is Ichthus, and a French Horn player bought him four years ago (yes, he’s very old for a beta fish). She was lonely in her studio apartment and figured someone should listen to her play the horn for hours.
The French Horn player went to Banff in the summer of 2007 and gave the fish to the Church Intern, who she’d be living with the next year. The Church Intern was also moving that summer, so handed the fish over to her boyfriend, the Latin Professor, for safe tending and keeping.
The Latin Professor and Ichthus share a very special relationship. Under his care, Ichthus developed the desire to eat only when someone else would sit and eat at the same time. The Latin Professor and Ichthus would spend hours together, grading papers, making bubbles, eating cereal and fish flakes.
Ichthus was tamed. He no longer liked to be alone.
The French Horn player returned from her summer festival, and forgot to ask for her fish back. Months later, she mused that it might be nice to get a pet fish. At this point, it was certain that she was no longer a fit fish parent, but as she had roommates, the Latin Professor sadly handed the fish back over.
The French Horn player moved out, I moved in, but the fish is the constant in this apartment. We dote on Ichthus, putting the food right in front of his face (he may be going a bit blind), and making sure we sit down with him for at least one meal a day.
I was always a cat person but about 6 years ago our son begged us to get a dog. We put him off for many months but finally we gave in. We now have a cute, spunky cavalier king charles named Fiona. She has given us such joy and really rounds out our family. So, now I have become a dog person!
I currently have one dog and one cat. My dog, Kali, is a black lab/chow. She is the sweetest thing, she is great with kids, and loves to go for walks. My cat, Sam, is a black and white little tiny thing with a long tail and white whiskers (my favorite part of him); he is the same age as my daughter (to the day).
I love dogs because they are always there for you and will always come back. However, I love cats because they are so independent, although I sometimes think my cat is a bit more touchy feely than most cats.
I have recently been befriended by a racing pigeon. My husband was standing on our terrace when a pigeon wearing a racing tag on its leg landed on the railing next to him. Before you know it, the bird is sitting on my husband’s shoulder. He follows us everywhere and is super friendly. Spends his days on our terrace and nights at his nest, wherever that is. Named him Fred “Fird” Bird. He is beautiful with white head, purple neck and gray body.
Would love to learn how to spin!! Thanks for the opportunity.
I’m a rodent person. I love hamsters and especially guinea pigs. I used to have an awesome guinea pig that I would take for walks using a rabbit leash. We’d also tie him up in the backyard and let him “graze”. He’d make sounds every time the fridge opened until he got a treat. Unfortunately, he also had a tendency to pee on you when you were holding him.
All of the pets in the house are rescues, unplaned but oh-so-very-loved!
The oldest is our ‘tree cat’ Lucky (guess where we found her!) and she rules the roost so to speak.
“Tiki” came next; a soon to be 2 year old Moustache Parakeet who was abandoned by his owners after being bought as a gift that wasn’t well recieved (the people who took him in were going to kill him if we didn’t take him) – now he’s a huge and noisy part of our family!
Last but not least, “Figment”, a pug/beagle/jack russel mix – who was chosen by our previous dog Nikita (who was of course a rescue from the humane society after her previous owners beat her almost to death). We were looking at an article about dogs rescued from a puppy mill and Nikita went crazy trying to nuzzle the screen over the picture of this little pup – we didn’t plan on adopting the pup, but Nikita died a few days later, and in honour of her we did take this little lady home, since it seemed to be Nikita’s last wish that we have another pup in the house.
That’s probably more than you wanted to know, but that’s our family of pets. You could say we take in whichever pets cross our paths, and will continue to do so!
Thanks for letting me enter! I love your site, and I am one of many hoping to learn to spin!
Tobie-Lynn
I have one cat who is grey and white and very fluffy. We think she’s part Maine coon. Her name is Ariel and she’s almost 9 years old. She spends the day sleeping hard and then randomly attacks shoelaces.
Sadly we rent at the moment, but hope to someday adopt a dog….
What a sneaky method of trying to aspinnerate people!
Well, sadly I am now down to my 2 poodles, as my kitty cat died on Saturday. The poodles are big standard poodles, and I’m always amusing the heck out of toy poodle people by referring to my girl poodle as “little.” She’s 21″ weighs 45lbs and is only “little” in reference to every other dog I’ve owned! She herds sheep, too.
My cat Timmy was the biggest ball of love in the world, but embarrassed easily. He was a very dignified tuxedo cat. I once was telling my daughter on the phone how he had jumped and missed the table and landed on his behind. When he heard me talking about this mortifying event, he turned his back(side) to me, even though it meant he had his nose to the wall! (He wasn’t even ALLOWED on the counter, but there he was. Guess I knew what he was sayin’. My husband and I cried like babies when Timmy passed on. I hope I get to see him on the other side when I get there.
My hubby and I adopted our cat Murphy 12 years ago at a Petsmart when she was about 5 years old and she’s still going strong. She’s not the cuddliest of cats and her voice is not sweet, but she’s quite the character.
I’ve got two cats — Winnie, who’s a little tabby, and Dexter, a fat gray and white cat whom my parents recently banished to the garage because he pees on laundry baskets and we couldn’t get him to stop. It makes me sad, but he’s allowed to come in sometimes.
I have one black American short hair named Patches. He’s 10 this spring and still very playful. He keeps my lap warm while I’m knitting. He’s such a mischievous cat, you can’t leave anything with chocolate in it lying around or it will go missing.
My brothers and sisters and I love naming animals.
How about Brownie, Larry Llama, Jeffrey Giraffe, Baaaab, Baaabs, Wooly, Pooky, Pooty, Canonball
Eweliya (like Julia in russian) ,
Eweknow (Juno) ,
Ewenice (Eunice),
Ewelery (jewelry)
Eweltide
I’m partial to dogs, but right now I have a red-earred slider (turtle). His name is Sid Vicious.
Liz (newsas on rav)
We have 3 pets because we have 3 children. Now all three children are off at college and beyond and we STILL have the 3 pets! 2 cats (brother and sister named Pepper and Casper) and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Toby. When the oldest daughter comes home for a long visit, she brings 2 more cats, Rikki and Mongoose.
Wonderful giveaway!
my 2 angels are now gone, muffy & the duke. what great companions they were! 2 TOTALLY opposite dogs if ever there were! she was a 12lb westie and he was a 60lb lab/shep mix, of course you can guess who was THE boss. he never confronted her and did whatever she wanted, and she took FULL advantage of him. i had to go on an unexpected business trip and no one was available to care for them on such short notice, so off to the kennel they went. when i returned, the bill was for one kennel run only. when i brought this to the attention of the proprieter, she said, “well, i cannot not charge you for 2, since they only used one run”. i asked what happened. and she told me that when they were put into their adjoining kennel runs one of my dogs barked and cried and cried and barked until she let them in together. i said to her that although duke was a big, handsome looking guy he was really a softie. boy was i surprised when she told me it was bossy lil muffy who cried for her brother duke!!!
boy, i sure do miss those too rascals!
I’d love to learn to spin. Then I could make yarn from the golden retriever hair I have been saving over the past 6 years.
Sir Maxamillion Kissalot, a 12 year old Yorkshire terrier with the personality of a grumpy old man. He snorts at me to get me to move so he can “vacuum” after lunch.
I grew up with dogs, but as an adult I have had only cats. But now that I have kids, I’m thinking about getting a puppy. My other pet is a Norfolk Island pine (named Norfie) that a coworker gave me when he quit.
We have a Senegal Parrot named Fiona. We named her after the character in Shrek because she is mostly green. We find that she really lives up to her name because sometimes she is a princess and sometimes she is an ogre.
Oh how cool! I’ve always had a hankering to learn to spin… No pets at our house… I love cats, but my husband is allergic. He loves dogs, but refuses to get one while we live in town. We had a Beta fish once, but it died…
As my name here and avatar on Ravelry show, MyDogPetey is deeply embedded in my heart. He was an English Springer Spaniel. Gone since 2002 but will never be forgotten. He was white and liver brown. Little spots on his nose, and a small rectangle of white amidst the brown on his butt end. We used to call that his window and we would pretend to put our eye up to it to look inside him.
The best thing about Petey (Sir Peter of Sherwood Forest, Peteman, The Petemeister, PeteyPetey) is no matter what, he had to sit on some part of you or lean on you or be touching some part of you.
So affectionate. Definitely an old, old soul on the inside. He brought 13 wonderful years of sunshine into our house and he was something special that will always be with me and my family. My dad always said it was the best money he ever spent on anything in his entire life.
I’m misting up right now just thinking about him.
Here come the waterworks.
♥♥♥♥♥♥
I have a 12 year old basset hound, a 6 year old beagle mix, 10 cats, 5 birds, and 5 rabbits. Three of the rabbits are angoras, which are the closest thing to a spinners flock I’m allowed to have where I live.
I used to have four wonderful guinea pigs. They would burble and chatter all day and squeak like crazy whenever they heard anything they associated in the slightest with food–plastic bags (because lettuce comes in them), the fridge door, or even the sound of applause on the radio (sounds like crinkling plastic).
oh my god what an amazing give away…
i’m an animal lover of most all sorts…(even the black widow spider who’s been hanging out above my front door…i guess he/she’s a watch spider)
however i’ve had a dog (of my very own)(my son or daughter) since 1988.
actually, i first had a cat…but he wouldn’t walk on a leash…until i got a dog!
my first puppy of my very own i had for a wonderful 15.5 years. he was my heart and soul. he taught me a lot and was my overlooker, an angel (ok hindsight is 20/20!) but before it was time to let him go to forever land…
i got a rescue ~~to rescue me from the fear of losing him.
she was a german shephard (my old guy was a mix from boston 1988…a german shepherd standard poodle–BEFORE they were ‘cool’ to mix)
my shepherd came from a rescue out here in ca.
she was a tortured soul and attacked my old guy every day
i didn’t bring her back…should have.
long story short
i finally had to put HER down after two years because she almost malled someone i know while ON a leash–
after she left her body, she finally looked at peace and as beautiful as she really was…all that pain gone and i KNOW she got to know what love was living with me for those two years.
the day after i put her down, i was sort of looking around at the rescues and thought i might just take a dog break…my mom said “GET A DOG.”
i headed out to the rescue where i’d gotten the shepherd (she and my trainer both encouraged me to do the right thing and put her down too)
and they had my current baby WAITING for me.
she is An amazing mix: dobie/coonhound and i’m her third mom.
i’ve had her 4 years now. she’s 8.
i love her.
i’ve rambled on quite long
but i love animals
i’d have more if i could
but just one kid is enough for me to take care of
i love reading about all your adventures and animals at the farm
i’d think i’d enjoy doing what you do–only not in the winter
with love
to you all and the fuzzy ones
rona and kehli the dog
i’m a cat person, but my SO is sadly, allergic. I’ve had the pleasure of spending earlier times with 2 special animal friends. amelia, the most stunning and sensitive black cat ever and princess and fiesty and charming westie.
my so is a herpetologist. seriously. he loves herps. he’s trying to talk me into it, but i’m hoping the cat allergy fades.
Though I’ve owned a wide range of animals in the past, from iguanas to crabs to shelties and chickens, currently two feline princesses own me. An English lass, Clarissa, and a Teutonic troublemaker, Gertrude “Gertie.” I love pretty much every animal. The only exceptions are rabbits, rats/mice/gerbils/hamsters, and scorpions, none of which shall ever pass the doorjamb of my home again. Hah!
Would love to learn to spin, thank you for the chance to win a way to pick up another fiber addiction!
I have one dog that I joke is older than my marriage, and sometimes I wonder who I love more hehe and a yorkie that I helped birth and who seems glued to me…I have 2 cats, one that thinks she’s a dog and one that is obsessed with playing in water…really, she sits in the shower with me!
I have two cats – both foundlings. Their names are Dulcie (Dulcinea from Man of La Mancha) and Zach (Ozeki – the second tier of Sumo wrestler). They are New York cats, but they currently live with me in Hong Kong. Thank goodness!
I love animals. In my lifetime I’ve had dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, a guinea pig, cattle (yes they were more like pets and it was very tough when they were big enough to slaughter for meat), and fish. What I have not ever wanted to own was any type of reptile. Currently we only have 2 dogs and 1 rabbit.
Over the years I’ve had cats, dogs, and fish, but nothing beats my beta Pete. Rescued from the desk of a fired co-worker who left him behind, he had a rocky road, but ways always a wonderful pet. His first bowl cracked, his second home was a re-purposed flower vase, and he took it all in stride. My grandmother named him, a week before she passed away, out of the blue she just called him Pete, and it stuck. The best part of it is, he survived the trek up the Alcan all the way from Portland Or, to Fairbanks AK, in a pickle jar. He rode between my feet with the heat on to keep him warm after finding him half dead in ice cold water. I literally screamed. Hhe got the ultra pampering after that. We never took a hotel room, but slept in the back of the pickup along side the road, so his jar was always wrapped up in a sock, and a blanket, and then placed between our pillows, just to make sure he stayed warm. He made 3 moves to new places with me before he finally gave up the ghost. Always responsive, he and I had our games, the “ooo I’m a big tough fish” game, or the “heh, you can’t see me behind this plastic plant!” game. The best was the “HI!! I missed you all day!” nose bonks. Every time I came home there would be a faint *tonk tonk* and there he would be, tapping the glass with his face, so I’d nose up to the glass and he would bonk my nose. I miss his little fishy kisses!
I have two kittybrats that are currently living with my mom, since my husband and I lost our house to foreclosure and are now renting. Oreobrat is a black and white kitty that the cops I used to dispatch for picked up loitering outside an apartment building. If she were human she’d be a Valley Girl. Lunabrat is…strange. When people used to come over she’d stalk them around the house and glare at them with a look of deep, barely-suppressed insane rage. She also drools when she’s happy and “chatters” in her sleep. I’ve also had zebra finches, guinea pigs, rabbits, goats, an orphaned crow, donkeys, and of course dogs, and I loved them all, but my kittes are tops.
Dogs, definitely. We raise German shepherds for a guide dog school. I have taken spinning classes and spun some of their hair.
We have a 17-year-old cat, Hobbes, who thinks he’s the boss of the household. He’s never met a stranger–all people are potential food providers and chin scratchers!
I have a strict no-pet rule for our family – allergic to cats and never keen on dogs. But my youngest son really really wanted a pet. So we broke down and got him a fishtank. I have to admit, it can be very soothing to watch the fishies.
I’m a dog person. I grew up with a golden retriever who was the daughter of my grandparent’s dog. We got her when I was 2 and she lived for 15 years, when she passed I was almost grown-up and could not remember having her around. She really was that kind of dog you only get to meet once, if you are lucky.
Later I wanted my own dog and my (now ex) wanted a dane, so we compromised (!) on a great dane. I can honestly say it is the biggest compromise I’ve ever made! Such sweet friendly dogs but they behave like 60 kg/120 pound kittens. I’m now single and dogless, I travel too much in my job to have pets and thought I would get used to not having them around, but I miss the drooling hairballs more every week.
I’m in the proces of learning to spin!! I’d love to get off to a great start with this!!
Carla
Comment edited to add I love pet, but we just had to put ours down. He was an 11 yr old poodle/whatever combo.
Carla
I am through and through a dog person, we lost our wonderful golden retriever Maizy at the age of 15 last year. Currently we have a dog-cat named Kittybaby who is so close to being a dog it’s hysterical. He “chows down” when we put his food in the bowl and east nonstop pushing the bowl to the wall to do it. No nibbling here. Greets everyone at the door when we enter the house and cries when they leave. Yup, my vet calls him the dog-cat.
anything with fur…i particularly adore dogs and horses. but, my dream is to have a small farm and essentially do what you do! right now, we have three dogs – 2 Scotties (1 black, 1 wheaten) and a Westie..one geriatric cat, too. I love the terriers, they might actually be good mousers on the farm…not so good about flock guardians though…
good job on the manuscript..don’t know how you carve out the time! do you actually sleep?
Our family includes 5 furbabies. . .4 of them rescues. It all started with a beautiful white rabbit named Buddy, then came the cats Graham and April, and finally our pups Duncan ( a shepherd mix) and Vashty ( a pitbull mix). So I’m really just an all around animal person! I have dreamed since I was a little girl of raising sheep myself, but life took me in another direction. Perhaps in my retirement
I would simply love to learn to spin!!
Hmm what kind of animal person am I? I love our cat! But then we venture out side to the dozen horses. LOve Love them. Such characters! I also love watching the wid barn kitties they are super cute.
I have a beloved turtle. She does not particularly approve of woolen wear (being cold Blooded) but she loves to sit with me in the sun to knit.
I am a dog person…. which is funny because when i was little i used to be deathly afraid of any and all dogs!! I have a miniature yorkie named Gabriel. I also have a male cat named Lily, but i find him to be really annoying! lol
Cats! I took in a stray who thanked me by delivering two kittens. What a joy they are. Funny, loving, playful, curious. Taking in (Little Orphan) Annie was one of the best decisions I ever made.
I am definitely a cat person. They are great company and very low maintenance. My cat greets me at the door when I come home, tells me all about her day, solicits physical affection, then goes off to take care of important “cat stuff” when she’s had enough attention. Plus she’s always happy to keep my lap warm during the cold winter months!
Eli, the dachshund came to live with us about 6 years ago and one can get lost in his big brown eyes. He loves people but has problems with Martha the cat who came to live with us about two years before he did. Out of desperation he taught himself to go upstairs when his humans left him (if only for two minutes). Martha lurked in the room next to the top of the stairs; as soon as Eli rounded the corner she would jump out hissing and clawing. His nose was left bloody on more than one occasion. Eli’s stair climbing days ended quickly (thankfully) but their relationship has been doomed.
I’m a dog lover! We have a black lab mix – Tommy – that we adoped from the Humane Society. He is a real sweetie!
OK, you finally drew me out of lurker-land with that giveaway. Neat, neat book and starter things! I have a Bernese Mtn Dog. After years of a house full of Guiding Eyes for the Blind puppies, we’re down to just our “Dory” for a little bit.
I have quite a house full! I have 2 Aussies, Sasha(red tri) and Tucker (blue merle), a black lab, Emmett (named by my daughter after a vampire in the book Twilight), a handsome long haired cat, Striker, 3 bunnies (2 angoras and 1 I don’t know what that we rescued from an abandoned apartment), Sparky the hamster, a hermit crab and a tank full of fish!!!! I have 4 children that know my soft spot (animals). I have declared that I cannot take on any more unless we move to a farm! Of course the kids are always looking for the “perfect” place!!!!
In my youth we had ponies, ducks, dogs, and my father had rabbits that he entered in all the local fairs. I have had one short time in my life with no animals around me and I just didn’t feel right! I love the never ending affection my animals have for me. It is a lot to keep up with the kids and the pets…but I absolutely LOVE it.
What a great giveaway! Spinning looks so cool – have been wanting to try it, but haven’t – yet.
We have a 10 year old chocolate lab, named Nestle, from, “N E S T L E S, Nestle’s makes the VERY best C H O C O L A T E.” Picture the old TV ad of the Nestle’s dog singing. Boy does that date me! Nestle was our concession to our son who loves animals, especially dogs. I never liked dogs (before) because I had several bad experiences with them as a child. Like having a German Shepherd put her mouth around my head! (She was very protective of her boy and didn’t want us playing together. )
Before Nestle, we had a beautiful cat we rescued from the animal shelter. He was part of our lives for almost 20 years. His first owner had named him JR, after JR of Dallas fame. Being a Texan, I didn’t care for that image. My husband renamed the cat, “Fat Cat Banker”, Banker for short. That was much more suitable for a big fluffy cat.
I have 3 dogs – two are basset hounds, Sabrina is the Queen Bee and Daisy is a lovely older rescue dog who spent her whole life in a kennel until 12/28/08, the day she came to live with us. She loves it here because all that is asked of her is to shed on the furniture and give hugs and kisses. I also have a yorkie-bichon named Tiffany. She is my little princess, wearing adorable hand knitted sweaters and bows in her unruly hair. After having 2 boys and no girl to dress up, Tiffany is as close as I can get. My younger boy is seriously ill and confined to home. Our dogs bring us and especially him, joy, happiness and lots of love and help make the days seem less stressful and long.
I live with a presumed fawn bearded collie, Bode. He is a rescue dog, don’t really know his age except that he is mature. I named him for the skiier Bode Miller who also has a great grin and likes to play in the snow.
Much to my children’s chagrin, I am allergic to cats which are their first big love. We’re finally settled enough to have a pet again and my kids have their list, they want to start with fish and then a horse and bunnies and cats and hamsters and “journals” (my daughters name for gerbils) and perhaps a naked mole rat or two… We’ll just have to see what fits in our small urban house with a postage stamp back yard!
Such a great giveaway! I was just online yesterday looking at spinning sites…I’m anxious to give it a try! We have two pooches…a chocolate lab named Maggie Now and a very wild husky-shepherd named Otto…both females. They are, of course, part of the family and our lives wouldn’t be the same without them.
I am a dog person. We live in Boston and have a small terrier mix. We are also about to begin helping (less than two weeks!) an organization called NEADS raise puppies to become service dogs.
We have 3 rescue furries. Princess Sheba, who came to us having been rescued from torture, someone had cut off half of an ear and chopped off half her tail. Tonto and his sister Sassy, who were rescued by my DD after she heard little tiny cries that lead her to 2 tiny babies. They aren’t tiny babies now. Tonto is a big black n white pillow on paws who is a HUGE Pet Me ‘Ho, Sassy is a willowy grey and white with a foot n sock fetish(especially dirty socks, she loves to rub em on her face). Sheba is my talker kitty. She “talks” to you, coos at you, warbles at you and has big gorgeous expressive kitty eyes that look at you with so much love your heart could just burst. We love all 3 of our furbabies and I wouldn’t trade them for anything. You can see piccies of Sheba and Tonto on my Ravelry page, but Sassy for whatever reason continues to elude the camera! Sheba has taken a shine to my Pen Pal Shawl and rubs her face all over the yarn cake then snuggles next to it while I am knitting on the shawl. Why, we don’t know, but she sure loves it. Never done that with my other projects really, so this is a first.
So, I have never been a cat person. Ever. Growing up, slumber parties with sleeping bags were things I dreaded. DREADED. My best friend, Samantha, had this evil siamese cat that loved to attack my sleeping bag bound feet as they tossed and turned. It was awful. I vowed never to have a cat.
Then, I met my husband and he thought I needed one. I wasn’t at all excited but I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. We named her Zoey and took her home at 8 weeks of age. She will be 7 this May. 8 days after I turn 28 and every night my feet stay warm b/c of her .
I have always been a dog person. My husband had never really had a good experience with them and was pretty dead set against it. When we started looking for a home, I made a compromise. I’ll take care of a house if he agreed to a dog. We got the house and a few years later, Moses. Moses Bleu is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. He turned one on October 29th and is a Mama’s boy all the way! Which I wouldn’t stand for it to be any other way. Much to my surprise just a few months after bringing Moses home, Husband wanted a girl puppy. Along came a beautiful Red and White Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Hazel Moon.
He wants more puppies. Our house is under 1,000 square feet and there is no more room for more puppies. I’m trying to convince him he wants an Angora rabbit. I would love to spin me some Angora!! Ooooh, Aaaahhhh! He hasn’t agreed yet.

Great contest! Awesome blog. I’ll be back often.
I’ve always thought I was more of a dog person, but I’ve ended up living with cats most of my life. Right now I share my house with two cats–a fat cat named Whiskey and and old tabby named Alec (more commonly known as “Baby Cat” because he was the baby cat for a long long time). Baby Cat is the Energizer bunny–he has outlived two other cats and shows no sign of stopping, though he’s a bit slower now that he’s nearly 17. When Whiskey first moved into our household, she hated Baby Cat and wanted nothing to do with him. We despaired that he would never make friends with her, though he is the friendliest, dopiest cat there is. Well, enough time has gone by that Whiskey has learned to tolerate Baby Cat well, enough that she’ll let him snuggle up to her upon occasion. But she draws the line when he tries to get a little TOO close….
What an amazing giveaway! We are dog people around here. We currently have a 3 y/o Anatolian Shepherd named Pasha who we rescued from the local animal shelter just before Christmas. She is a big teddy bear and great with the kids! I don’t know how anyone could have let her go.
I’m sure as the girls get older, we’ll have a variety of hamsters, mice, and other little critters running around here.
I’ve always had dogs (Pugs and Great Danes) until recently. Now we are into Sphynxes, a hairless cat breed. Our first girl we named Phrina, which is short for Freak of Nature! This was before we knew how unique and wonderful these cats are. Sure, they look, um, unusual (“alien rat that was behind a paint truck explosion” is one description) but their loving nature is what keeps you coming back for more–personalities more dog-like than cat. Like potato chips, you can’t have just one. We have another boy, Stuart, and are waiting to bring home our new baby girl Kofi.
wowsa—that’s swell of you!
I could not define myself as either one or the other…I am not drawn to a specific species, but rather distinct personalities within all species.
I have 120 lb Golden Retriever named Junior…whom I love to bits….Do you remember Archie comics…the Blond guy “Moose”….yup…that’s my dog. Only instead of being all-around dense, he’s only dense if there is no mention of food. Show that dog a piece of Bacon and he’ll do your taxes for you.
I also have a Tortie Cat Named Pansie…..Before we bought our house we lived in a shady neighborhood in the city, in a tenement ( this building was filled with the lowest examples of Humanity I have ever seen) infested with mice…we got Pansie at the shelter a few days after we brought our baby twins home from the hospital in the hopes that she might scare the mice out of our place. Instead of becoming the expert mouser we had envisioned as we walked through the Humane Society, she decided that she was not infact a kitten afterall, and “the twins” quickly became “the triplets”. She is perhaps the most baby friendly cat I’ve ever seen, she lets those babies pull her across the floor by her tail, she will play catch with them by batting a ball back and forth, she will let you know if they are sad or hungry or stinky, and if you can’t find her during the hours of 12:00 and 2:00 P.m. chances are she’s in one of the kid’s room curled up with them for a nap.
I honestly don’t know what I’d do without them….
I have a cat named Prince Charming, but I call him Kittynose. He was abandoned by his owners, who were my sister’s neighbors. They moved away and left this poor kitten all alone! My nephews fell in love with him, but they already have 4 cats so my sister said they couldn’t keep the kitten they’d named Charmie. I took him home intending to change his name, but he would only answer to things that sound like Charmie, so that’s how he got named Prince Charming.
We’re between dogs right now, but I’m leaning towards getting a cockapoo. Its not too big, and not too girlie for a family.
Would love to learn how to spin!
I have always wondered why people like to spin and this is certainly a way to find out. I am sure there is additional stress relief here and that would certainly be a good thing!
We have a black lab that is named for the street we found him on. He is the sweetest and is WONDERFUL with our children, eventhough he came before them. We had 2 elderly cats that we adopted after my inlaws messy divorce. They were the first cats I had ever had but stole my heart completely. I don’t think there have been many years of my life that I haven’t enjoyed the wonderful and soothing company of an animal family member.
Wonderful giveaway!
I have one betta (a.k.a. “Chinese Fighting Fish”) named VHS.
I have 5 cats, Twizzle, Salem, Leta, Scribble and Dizzy. Twiz and Salem predate my kids and are both rescued cats, Twiz is a tiny little cat with no tail, and is frequently called a kitten despite being 9!Salem is a big softy cat, scared of the kids, and is famous for her silent mieow, her mouth opens, but nothing comes out! Leta came from another cat we had who was sadly poisoned a few years ago, very easy going cat, but has a habit of going out the front door and immediately coming round to the back door to be let in.. Scribble and Dizzy are sisters from the same litter, Scribble was my birthday gift to my self, such a sweet little cat…who sleeps on top of the door, literally along the top of the door! Dizzy went to my friend originally but ended up with us after her other cats didn’t get with her. Dizzy by name dizzy by nature! Utterly bonkers, loves the kids to death and is found in my eldest childs bed at night snuggled up.
Never ever a dull moment, more often than not some one is on a mad moment, either on their own, or with another cat, and they are so loud you can hear them running down the hall!
Love my cats to bits, could never ever live without a cat and this lot are just the best, all different but all totally loving and all mine!
Have always been a dog person. Curently have a Corgi, but have had many in the past. Great giveaway, would love to learn to spin.
I love all animals and have had a menagerie over the years – dogs, cats, rodents of all kinds, parakeet, iguana, and fish. We even had a pet crawdad (crayfish) that lived way past his normal life expectancy. I’m a pushover when the kids want a new pet. We currently have one cat – Callie. She is old and has arthritis so she isn’t as perky or the hunter that she used to be, but we love her.
I’ve been toying with the idea of learning to spin so this giveaway caught my eye.
I have no pets but for a very good reason…..I’m holding out for Alpacas! Any pet that comes potty-trained is perfect in my opinion and the added value of fibre…well, lets just say it would be perfect! Their faces are beyond cute and those eyes…yep I’m head over heals in love! Of course I live in the city so it’s not going to happen any time soon.
So many choices! I’ve never had a pet . . . OK, does a newt count . . . his name was Slimy. My vote for sheep names . . . this is a tough one . . . my idea is to use knitting stiches . . . cable, purl, twist . . . though I must admit, I like some of the other ideas much better. Thanks for offering this contest . . . I’ve been thinking about spinning and wondering if I’d enjoy it. Your prize would be one way to find out!
Oh my goodness! This is truly special to me today, because I get pick my beloved cat Captain up from the vet. He had a biopsy yesterday, to see how far along his intestinal cancer is (hopefully, it is still treatable *fingers crossed*), and had to stay at the vets office overnight. Captain is the sweetest kitty, and has had a lot of medical problems lately, but is still in great spirits, and continues to have a good quality of life.
We also have the rest of our Kitty family, Captain’s brother Max, Mom Isabella, and unrelated brother Rocky. Isabella was a stray, who moved into our back porch while pregnant & had her litter there. We kept them all, & Rocky is a tamed feral that moved into our backyard when he was about six weeks old. He now lives in our garage, & is completely tame.
Then there are the birds…Cockatiels Coconut & Bentley, and Parakeets Sailor & Lulu. Coconut started my love for birds – I rescued her off of my neighbors roof, bought Bentley at a garage sale from people that neglected him for 4 years, Sailor was rescued after being left in an apartment by people who no longer wanted him, and Lulu is my one & only purchase from a pet store, to help Sailor learn how to trust people. He watches me interact with her, and is slowly learning.
Those are my “kids”! They are awesome
We are dog lovers around here.We have a Boston Terrier,Purl and 2 Pekingese Cookie and Babymouse.I am forever vacuuming up hair, but it is so worth it.They are just like our kids, spoiled and loving it!
i am a dog fan!..i love my american bulldog, maggie…i’m not too fond of cats, except we do have one named pearl, and she is a rare breed…not the typical needy cat.
and…i’ve always wanted to learn how to spin!
I have two birds, a cockatoo and a black-headed caique. But at my parent’s house I’ve got three dogs, a cat, and some fish. Plus 7 alpacas and a llama (not so much pets). I’ve had cats, dogs, birds (including chickens), turtles, snakes, a rabbit, guinea pigs (including a hairless one!), hamsters, fish and more fish! The experiences I’ve had with animals throughout my life are some of the most rewarding I’ve ever had.
Wow…I am really blown away by this giveaway! So many good things.
I’m a cat person. I grew up with 3 cats in the house. Our orange cat died a few years back and within 2 weeks a little orange kitten showed up in our backyard. Of course we adopted him!
Hiya! I saw ya in Button Addicts on Rav. To answer your question, I’m more of a dog person. I do like that my cat purrs though, which my dog cannot do, heh.
I am a cat person, but I am lucky enough to have the best dog in the world–his name is Pete & he’s a black terrier mix, 19# or so of solid gold. Every day we go on a tromp around the hills & wetlands of Sonoma Co. and we have a blast together. We have 3 cats: Maisy, Matt & Boomer. Maisy is a weentsy gray girl, maybe 7# soaking wet, but she has every human & animal member of the family wrapped around her pinky toe.
We don’t have any pets, due to allergies and the fact that we’re in the US for the summer. We do all love our squirmy wormies that live in our compost pile here tho, and we feed them often. When we’re in the US, there are plenty of squirrels that raid the birdfeeder, which keep the boys happy. But my favorite animals there are the bullfrogs that come out at night! I love these guys. One we call EoieFrog (cause he somehow looks like our youngest did when he was all pudgy and baby), and he hangs out on our back patio at night, slurping bugs. I can sit and watch him for hours. I LOVE frogs.
I was raised by a German Shepherd named Kelly. We had him from the time I was small enough to get knocked over by his wagging tail until I entered Jr. High School. That year, I lost Kelly and entered puberty and it’s a toss-up which was the more life-changing incident. Once I became an adult (more or less) Uncle Sam kept me moving from place to place for many years, so I adopted a long line of stray cats and left a trail of bird feeders where ever I was stationed. Temporarily animal-less, I am learning how to be a civilian now and teaching my students how to garden organically. I am also teaching myself how to knit, which is the first move toward learning to spin my own yarn, with the next logical step being the raising of animals furry enough to make fabric from. Raising them organically, of course. :=)
I love dogs, although I have had cats in the past. No cats now, cause hubby is allergic. We currently have a very sweet 13 year old husky mix girl, one half Siberian husky, one half nobody knows what.
Have I lost MY mind? I have resisted the urge to develop a new addiction but … When we acquired our standard poodle twelve years ago, the breeder told us that everyone in the poodle’s family secretly thinks they are the poodle’s favourite. Actually, I really am Sophie’s favourite.
Don’t tell anyone, but she might be my favourite one in the whole family, too.
Dog lover here. We have a 100 lb. german shepherd/ Doberman Mix. We got him from a shelter (I prefer shelter dogs, why breed more when so many need a home??) He’s big and doofy and great with my kids, esp. my 3yo.
Thank you for this great contest! And what a perfect subject! We have so many different pets from fish to a python, but I suppose the most interesting is that for many years I bred and showed guinea pigs. Yes, there are guinea pig shows! I raised tortoiseshell americans (smooth coats with red, black, white patches), dalmatian americans (smooth white with black spots), and texels (long, curly hair). I don’t raise them anymore but I sure miss the babies that remind me of little lambs!
At the moment, the best I can do for pets is the fish at my boyfriend’s house. We went back & forth about keeping the tank set up, and finally decided to keep it & restock at Christmas time. We lost 2 of the fishies in the post ice-storm black-out, but other than that all are well. We’d love to have a dog (there are 2 who we love in his family, sweet little Toby and strong & beautiful Daisy) and I miss my former sister-in-law’s dog like crazy, but with both of us away from the house for long hours during the work-day, we don’t feel right about getting a dog just yet. Cats are out because of family members with allergies, so for now it’s just the fishies and our dreams of a someday having a dog.
I’m any every animal person, but my own brood includes two Corgis (Clementine and Valentino) and four cats – three are rescues (Noah, Isabella, and Archie) and my four fellow is a big Maine Coon Cat named Dolce. I bet the cats would love to ‘help’ me learn to spin!
God help me if I win this drawing . . . if I bring one more “hobby” into this house one of three things will happen (1) my husband will leave me (2) I’ll have to move out because the “stuff” will overrun us or (3) I’ll have the best collection of hobby stuff in debtors prison. Eeeeeek. Anyhoo . . . Mac is my 9 years-old Westie; we call him Mr. Ears or the Grumpy Old Man. He’s a big ‘ol baby . . . I’ve seen him jump up on the bed, but MUST have help getting up if someone is in the room. He’s a mess. Then we have our second Westie, Gracie, who is affectionately known as our attention whore . . . we brought her home in January, and she’s really a mess. She MUST be the center of attention and demands it at any cost, falling over herself to attain same. Gotta love her. (Note: I want a coffee plant for a pet!!! How divine!)
I’m an animal lover all around!
I have four cats (Reggie, Faye, Arthur and Nora) and a dog named Helen. It’s true what they say – they’re the best friends a girl could hope for.
I am a Hermit Crab mom I have 12 in a 90 gal tank and 4 currently at school playing with the 5th graders. I think they are fascinating but definitely an involved pet. They require almost as much care as salt water fish and tanks. Currently I have 4 species but hope to add at least one more in the next year.
I take my first spindling class in three weeks can’t wait.
Thanks for the giveaway.
i love all types of animals, but am mostly a cat person at heart. i love my fuzzy plump kitty (her name is noodle), but lately i’ve really been enjoying other people’s dogs, especially puppies. i’m not ready to have my own dog, the cats enough work as she’s high maintenance!
We have a dog and a turtle. The turtle was caught in the wild by my son and has a very long story (for another day). However, I have a timely story about the dog and her name. (timely because of the categories for naming the spring babies) When we picked her out we had decided on the name Zoey. The breeder (a music teacher from Ohio State) told us they like to have their dogs register with names referencing composers. After some thought, knowing we would call her Zoey, we sent in her registered name as Zo Zo Ma.
So not only does this comment speak to you of my pets, it also includes my vote for the new baby names – composers!
I am totally an animal person. Those years after I left my childhood pets to go out on my own but before I got my own pets felt a little lacking.
As soon as I was able to take care of a pet, I got a dog. The guy I had just started dating at the time had a cat but also really wanted a puppy. So, he got one pretty much at the same time as I got my dog. 7 years later, we are married and still have those two dogs (Jack and Tchazo). The two of us, the two dogs and our cat (Luna) were a happy little family until we lost Luna to a year long battle with nasty cancerous tumors. It seems we were meant to be a 2 dog and 1 cat family because a year after Luna passed, we added a quirky shelter cat to our family (Fanny). Fanny has been a great fit for us and keeps the dogs in their place.
I am a cat person and have been since the day I was born. I don’t think I have lived a day without a cat in the house. Right now I have four cats – one of them is turning 20 (19?) this month. She is the most gentle, sweetest kitty in the whole world. Cats Rule!
Right now, I have 6 cats, all rescues or babies of rescues. We have Nerml, the first baby of Esme, who was unfortunately hit by a car soon after, and siblings Mohawk, Wuzza-wuzza, and Oatmeal, who are all white except for patched on the tops of their heads (black, grey, and brown, respectively), and who have the same father as Nermal (Snowball – we caught and fixed him the second time around!) but their mother wanted nothing to do with us. We have Bogie, who my dad rescued from the golf course. He was being fed by the people who ran the clubhouse, but the course was about to shut down for the winter and there would be no more food. We have little Gilligan, who came with his sister Ginger, but she was unfortunately hit by a car before she even started to like us. Gilly is very friendly, though. And our newest addition is baby Siddartha, who we found INSIDE our house, eating cat food out of the bag. He is so tiny and soft and adorable, but is is scared and only lets my dad touch him, because my dad just had elbow surgery so he was home 24/7 while Sid was still new to the house. He has a dislocated hip and needs surgery.
For the first time in my entire life, I don’t have a dog. It is driving me crazy. Our last dog had to be chained unless supervised because she bit a bicyclist when she was little (he kicked her), so our fences have fallen into a bit of disrepair. As soon as we have $ to fix them, we will probably do pitbull or weimaraner rescue. I can’t wait.
I also have a desert skink named Ralph, and he is so well-tempered. He likes to go around the back or your neck and just ride around with you, right under your collar. He is just like a little hotdog with legs. So cute!
“Duke” is an 8 lb. ocherese (dog). He is a sweetheart.
We have two cats, adopted from the SPCA. They were found abandoned in an apartment together, and the theory is that female (Mia) is the mom of the male (Noel) cat, but who knows. Mia is the exact same size as when we got her–7 lbs. Noel has grown from 3 lbs to something ridiculous that I don’t even want to think about (I think 15 lbs… I’m hoping not more).
My husband claims to not like domesticated animals and not like the cats, but it doesn’t stop him from picking them up and talking to them. We talk to our cats a lot. Oh, and we trained them to use the human toilet since we moved into a tiny condo. No issues until we went completely litter free, then Noel decided he deserved a urinal as well, and often uses the tub or sink instead to pee (it could be worse…). And the reasoning isn’t terrible, water goes down the tub, sink, and toilet.
My Roscoe is a special boy. He’s a big black lab mix that needs me because he is afraid of everything. There isn’t a sweeter dog anywhere. I just wish he had spinable hair/fur.
I have no pets. It would be so unfair to any pet as I commute to NYC every day from Hyde Park and also trave too much- that is when I do my beswt knitting. I wanted to be in the contest!
Wow, I’d love to spin some of your fleece! And I’ve checked that book out from the library – it’s awesome!
Please enter me into your drawing.

Our grandfur, a pug, doesn’t like me to knit as I don’t pay her proper homage then. She taught herself how to pull out a needle to get my attention. Good thing she is so cute and I can still see well enough to pick up stitches.
Forgot to say, we have 2 dogs that work the farm – Balto and Samson. They’re in charge outside, I’m in charge inside. Works well for all.

Meow! Hooray, another giveaway! My kitty says thank you! We love to watch the spinning process.
I’m a dog person, & I have 2 schipperkes. Skips were bred to control the rat population on ships. I decided to adopt a guinea pig (smart huh?) and my female would always run up to his cage and bark at him. But, Patches was tough. He would chew on the bars like ha ha try and get me – let me help you with the bars.
I like cats, but I’m allergic. Of course, after I adopted the guinea pig I found out I was allergic to him also. I managed until he went to heaven. No he didn’t go to heaven via the dog – old age did.
I love all animals. Since everybody is talking about their cats i will mention the two here. There are two males who dropped in last October with their mom who left them here and so they have a home here forever. One is solid black named Scooter and the other who i thought was a female for awhile is named, Maizie. I just kept the name it fits him. He is a tabby color. They are sweet and i love them. Raven
I don’t have any pets right now, unless you count my husband… he sure acts like an animal sometimes…
I have a cat who thinks he’s a dog, but he opted to stay with my parents on 150 acres of prime hunting land…
I learned to spin a couple of monthe ago, and I would love to learn more. I have a cat, named Tusse, and he is really fond of the wool I use for knitting. I’m not at all thrilled about he playing with my yarn.
We have 4 dogs – Bea the elderly Doberman, Mitch the totally odd English Bulldog, Sadie Mae (“The Boss”) the Miniature Poodle, and Scylla the manic Labrador/Poodle. Add to that Goosey the Goose, Dutch the Rabbit, and the 4 nameless parakeets. I’d have more if I could.
What a great giveaway! I am keeping my fingers crossed on this one.
We have three Newfoundlands (one of which had three puppies 5 weeks ago). They are big sweet dogs and their puppies are sweet too. My favorite dog is the Weimaraner, we used to have one. I miss him a lot!
I’ve always wanted to own sheep or goats or alpacas and make my own yarn. I think it is great that you are able to have your farm and raise animals.
Thanks for hosting a giveaway!

I have a Russian Blue Cat named Slate (named for his color). Slate loves to watch me knit as well as sit on my lap while I knit. I would love to learn how to spin and have been thinking of buying a spinning wheel in the near future….
I am a city mouse with the heart of a country mouse. I grew up in St. Louis MO with many various pets as a child. I don’t see myself as a dog OR cat person as I love them both equally but for different reasons. Currently I have two cats (no dogs for lack of a yard). Trixie is my old snuggle grouch who is about 12 yrs old and a very unique American Bobtail. The source of Trixie’s grouchy attitude is < 1yr Dotty who is a stray short hair tortoise shell that I found under my neighbors porch when she was about 8 wks old. I recently bought a share of the spring harvest for my sisters 30th birthday and thought it might be nice to have my own piece of fuzzyness to play with : )
Have we got critters!?!?!!?
Sadly, we lost one of our beloved cats a couple of days ago. Poor girl had multiple surgeries for breast cancer and was doing well until Tuesday when she began to have trouble breathing. We (the vet included) think that a tumor got inside her ribcage and was pressing on the lungs.
But we still have two cats, one very personable Coton de Tulear pupster, two adorable hamsters, 5 hermit crabs, a tank full of guppies and two ponds full of fish, frogs, etc in the back yard. And we love each and every one of them.
Thanks for your blog – I really enjoy it.
Four cats and one dog, all rescue. The cats Ozzie and Harriet came first and then Marshall and Francis (very large tuxedo Maine coon cats) were rescued from a litter left in an apple orchard. Ivy the very small yorkie terrier (the boss) is our newest addition some say shes like poison but I think she grows on you, therefore her name!
Holy lotta comments!
I am so distracted by that picture of fiber I forget what I am even supposed to talk about……….oh yeah, I like fish. That’s the only kind of pet I can have right now and I have a beta. I would really like a small dog though-like a bichon frise (I think I spelled that right) they are so cute and wonderful.
I love all animals to death but absolutely feel that a house is not a home until there is a cat or two in it. I wish I could do more to help all the people having to give up their pets right now. My heart hurts for them!

I don’t have any house pets due to allergies, but i am anxiously anticipating the arrival of our bullfrog to our little pond in the spring.
Most people who know me know that I’m completely and utterly obsessed and in love with my 4-year-old black lab Oscar. He’s a great snuggler and kisser!
My Honey Bunny is a buff color angora rabbit. Honey Bunny is my companion animal. We share vegetarian food together, and sometimes go on hopabouts. I call him a pig in bunny clothing, he sure knows how to beg! Stands up in the cage with his paws through the bars and bites on the cage until he receives his papaaya or apple or banana. He is more intelligent than I expected, and stacks things in his cage with the largest and heaviest on the bottom! He likes a clear space. One time I was going to fill his hay dish, which at that moment contained his toilet paper roll (toy). He bounced across the cage, pushed my hand away from the cage door, bounced over to his hay bowl, removed the tp roll, and picked up the bowl with his teeth then brought it to me!? Can’t wait to see what he will do next.
Zoe Bear is the name… squirrels are her game!!! Yes, I am the proud momma of an 8 year old Cairn Terrier. She is usually found (when inside) perched atop my sofa guarding our home from fierce chipmunks, squirrels and any other being that dare walk by that window! She loves to play, too, especially with her red blinky ball. Her favorite food is… well, EVERYTHING. She has taught me well how to treat her when she has something in her mouth that she shouldn’t — very smart girl. And when she’s ready for a nap, her favorite place is tucked into John’s arm watching TV. After all, she has a busy, busy life!!!
What a wonderful giveaway! I’m not a new spinner, but that stuff still looks so much fun to play with.
All my life, I thought I was a dog person, because my mom was allergic to cats so dogs were all we had. Then we got cats, and I discovered my true pet passion. My whole family are animal lovers, so we’ve had lots of critters crawling around our house, but I love my kitties the best.
We don’t have any pets now, but lost 2 cats in the past several months. Oreo was 17 and a very pampered girl. She died in July, 2008. Shorty was a pain in the rear and he’s been gone since January of this year. We have been in a hurry to get another kitty, but will someday soon.
I’m a dog/cat/hamster/mouse/rabbit person. Mostly dog. I’ve had six in the past, none of which are with us now.
My brother took two of them, another two had to be put up for adoption (my objections were futile), and the last two passed away just last year. It’s pretty lonely but the parents (Mom especially) refuse to get another pet.
Wow, I didn’t mean to be such a downer, haha. This is an awesome giveaway!
Thank you for the contest. This year all the children are leaving the nest so many of the animals are gone also. I am left with two adorable coton de tulear dogs, one cat who loves me, one cat that is missing his boy and a horse that needs a home. (Please adopt this horse).
Dena Rauch, why not have a give away for your horse. Of course, people who enter will have to submit a resume of their qualifications and prove they could support your wonderful horse and pay to have him delivered.
This is a fantastic give-away. Thanks for doing it.
I have one sweet old cat names Roxy. She’s a snuggly grey tabby.
