A Getaway Giveaway

by Susan on March 25, 2009

I am so excited about the week’s giveaway that I can hardly sit still. Shareholder Jennifer King and her husband Jason have recently re-opened the Litchfield County, Connecticut inn that has been in their family for years and years. It’s called The Sachem Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast, and, oh my, but it is lovely. You can see some photos here and read all about the Inn’s history here

Just look at these amazing old pictures of the inn.history06-l

The B&B is just as lovely today and it’s only an hour away from our New York farm. Jennifer and I are working on putting together a weekend dyeing workshop for a few lucky guests sometime soon, but in the meantime, she and Jason are letting me giveaway a two night stay at The Sachem Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast to one of our lucky readers!  You might even be able to use it the weekend of May 9th when we have our Hudson Valley Shearing Celebration.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post telling me about your favorite weekend getaway. One comment per person, please. You have until Saturday, March 28th at Noon EST to enter. The winner will be announced here on Saturday and he/she must email us to claim his/her prize.

Good luck!

p.s. Coming soon- a giveaway that brings together knitting, our cormo yarn, baseball and the most fun group of women I know.

my favorite “mini break” (as well call it) was about a month after DH and i met. i was planning to go to Baltimore to see the Red Sox play at the Orioles. I was planning to go alone but thought maybe he’d like to come. the trouble was that we didn’t know each other well. i figured if i invited him to go away for the weekend, that he might think i was too forward. anyway, i asked. he came. we spent took the train to Baltimore and spend 2 nights. saw 2 Sox games. got soaked in a rainstorm. 5 years later we are married with 2 kids :)

A CT native, I’m up for any reason to go back for a visit especially if its so close to your farm. My favorite weekend getaway is CT. I often take a long weekend to visit family in the Southington area.

My favorite weekend getaway is going to a friends house up in Vermont. He has a beautiful lodge located on Lake Champlain – the house is surrounded on 3 sides by the lake. Not to mention the beautiful mountains all around. As soon as I walk in the door I immediately unwind and feel relaxed. And the nicest part is bringing my spinning wheel out on the deck and enjoying the nature all around.

My favorite weekend getaway is going to my mom’s house in the Berkshires and making a fire in the fireplace, reading old books from childhood, going on a hike, etc.

When my husband and I were living in Seattle, we’d drive up to Anacortes and take the ferry to Orcas Island. We’d stay in Doe Bay for a few nights: motor scooter around San Juan island, hit the sauna and hot tub and stay in a very rustic cabin on the water (where we’d be woken up by the calls of the local kingfisher) watching the sun rise and set each day… Ah, beautiful weekends those were!

My favorite weekend getaway is anywhere that is not at our house! (I love my house) We have 2 young boys so any excuse to get away is a blessing to us!

Shaz March 26, 2009 at 8:14 am

My favorite weekend getaway was a trip to Boothbay Harbor, ME. It was our honeymoon in fact. It was late May so the tourist season hadn’t officially opened so we had the town to ourselves. It was a lovely and relaxing stay that included much lobster and other sea creatures for meals and a pirate ship that was docked down the street from our B&B, The Anchor Watch. I feel more calm now just thinking about that weekend. Thanks for the chance at the Giveaway!

I love going wine tasting with my husband. We’re going to Montauk for our 5th anniversary this year and plan on hitting a bunch of the wineries on the North Shore. I can’t wait!

So far my favorite weekend getaway has been Bar Harbor Maine. Jason and I even got up *before* the crack’o'dawn to drive up Cadillac Mountain and await the sunrise at what’s supposed to be the eastern-most (and thus earliest spotting) of the sun. We like anything where we can do a bit of light hiking or some sort of physical activity and if there is good food around we’re happy as clams. B&B’s have long been my very favorite sort of place to stay. I’m about as anti-hotel as they come though I’ll stay in one if there’s no other choice. Sadly, I couldn’t use the nights the weekend of the 9th so don’t enter me.

Traveling to my sister’s in Camp Hill, PA, from the Finger Lakes region in New York State. Except for her husband, her family is all-girl, even the cats (the dog is a boy but his name is “Cookie” so, well, it’s ambiguous). Except for me, my family is all guy (even my dog. His name is Blitz) so doing girlie things for a weekend is a real treat.

Tania March 26, 2009 at 9:50 am

My favorite Weekend Getaway is probably not a single getaway, but several that hubby and I have taken up to the mountains of NC. It’s one of our favorite places to just run off to, get a room at a B&B and spend a couple days hiding from the world.

jen March 26, 2009 at 9:56 am

My favorite weekend getaway is going to sonoma/napa for wine tasting. so fun. I’ve always wanted to go to a B&B back east, that Inn looks amazing. I would be VERY interested in the dyeing workshop as well!

Parisa March 26, 2009 at 9:58 am

Our old farm house in Chenango County, New York. It’s a very modest house, sparsely furnished by found, donated or garage sale furniture, wired and plumbed by my husband (from books and educational TV programs), and sits on < 3acres on a dirth road in a town that only boasts a general store, and a few homes selling local brown eggs.

Holly March 26, 2009 at 9:59 am

I am a big fan of the weekend getaway, especially since we just returned from a fabulous one in Toronto last week. I think my favorite was one to the Delaware Bay in May to watch the horseshoe crabs come in to shore to mate – So amazing to stroll the beach in the moonlight amidst thousands of horseshoe crabs doing there thing!

Alexandra Hamann March 26, 2009 at 9:59 am

My favorite weekend getaway is Provincetown during the summer such great antique shops and the drag queen sare hilarious.

Kristen March 26, 2009 at 9:59 am

I think my favorite weekend getaway is Maine, coastal Maine more specifically. We try to get up there at least once a summer, to hike, walk the beaches, swim, eat lobster etc. Plus I like to visit my favorite fiber haunts up there as well. Second favorite weekend getaway spot is Martha’s Vineyard…though we don’t get there as often as I’d like, traffic to the Cape makes me nuts. But I wanna come visit you guys this summer :)

Roz (AmIAKnitterYet) March 26, 2009 at 10:01 am

years ago, i was invited to stay in Maine at someone’s ‘guest house’. right on the water. it took about 7 hours to get there. I think it was near Blue Hill but completely off the beaten path. It was peaceful, beautiful (september) and with good company. We picked mussels off the dock and cooked them over pasta. Simply amazing.

April March 26, 2009 at 10:22 am

My favorite weekend getaway started off…rather badly! My fiance (who was boyfriend, at the time) had planned a lovely trip to Newport, RI for a beautiful weekend of sun, beach, and just getting away from it all.
Well. It poured (on and off the entire weekend!), he had a last-minute work proposal that had to be finished, and I had just found out a family member was terminally ill.

However, once the obligations (and at times, the weather) cleared up, just spending time together and enjoying the town was more than enough :)

Lauren March 26, 2009 at 10:51 am

My husband and I don’t get away too often, unfortunately. But we had a weekend get-away a few years ago in a place called Hocking Hills in Southeast Ohio (we’re from Cleveland, which is the Northern-most part of the state…). It was just beautiful! Hocking Hills is a very rustic, peaceful, wooded area – full of hiking trails that feature beautiful cliffs and gorges. We stayed in a small cabin that was just perfect for two people. The cabin sat in a small, open field where sheep from a nearby farm grazed right next to our cabin. It was all so lovely and so romantic!

Dena March 26, 2009 at 11:27 am

My favorite getaway was when we took our 1 year old up to Whistler, B.C. for his first snow. This was a baby that wouldn’t nap for anything. He played so hard that day that he fell asleep on a tram with a snowball clutched in his mittens. We have a photo of him sleeping with his bright red cheeks, snow suit and snowball. So beautiful!

shelle schiffer March 26, 2009 at 11:37 am

oh- my fav getaway? haven’t had one in 3 years since we had 2 wonderful boys 2 year apart….but before that was to san fran. did some yarn shopping, art seeing and wine tasting!

zoe March 26, 2009 at 11:43 am

my favorite weekend getaway was my mini-honeymoon to Ashville, NC. A weekend at a B&B, excellent food and historic old homes…what more can you ask for!

Stockannette March 26, 2009 at 12:01 pm

My favorite weekend “getaway” is going to my LYS, knitting, watching the Lamb Cam and not answering the phone

Dianne March 26, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Our favorite get-away is to Snowbird Mountain Lodge in North Carolina (not too far from Asheville). The lodge is lovely and homey–big fireplace and library, beautiful views of the mountains and fabulous food. No tv’s or phones in the rooms. So relaxing!!

Georgia Dabinett March 26, 2009 at 12:25 pm

Our favorite getaway is the NC Outer Banks, we’re headed there in a few weeks before it gets busy for the summertime. We rent the same house every year with a beautiful view of the dunes and we watch the “show” from the deck or take the dogs down to the sand to run. We always take the dogs because it wouldn’t seem like a beach vacation without them. Not much we do besides that for a week besides one shopping day in town. And I knit while my husband does a number of things including playing endless computer games, reading and of course enjoying his beer.

Patricia March 26, 2009 at 12:37 pm

My favorite weekend getaway was the car trips I took with my folks as a kid. We’d head to Gettysburg, PA and tour the battlefields (which are just incredibly powerful) and stay at one of those motels (Sunken Cove might have been the name of one, not a glamorous place, believe me. Many longrunning family jokes were spawned on these visits) and go to an all you can eat crab restaurant that I believe was called the Lincoln Log Inn and is no longer in business.

Similiar trips to eat crabs in Crisfield, MD or the much fancier St. Michael’s are also happy memories.

my favorite getaway is visiting my grandparents at their cabin, it was built by my great-grandfather as their fishing cabin. My grandparents stay there during the summer and we always try and sneak up there and get away from the world as often as we can. its one of those places that just rejuvenates the soul.

Diane March 26, 2009 at 12:50 pm

My favorite fun weekend is in the fall. John and I grab our large cups of jo and we’re off – to harvest festivals in Connecticut/Massachusetts. We look forward to our favorites, strawberry sundaes, kettle corn, and try to sample other new offerings, too. Love the local craft exhibits/contests and farm expo attractions. We’ve also seen some great shows with the likes of Deana Carter and Little Texas. Its a one of my favorite times of year to just hop in the car and enjoy the signs of Mother Nature doing her thing!

Christine G. March 26, 2009 at 12:56 pm

My mom and dad’s place at the Jersey Shore!

Kate W. March 26, 2009 at 12:57 pm

My favorite weekend getaway is to my in-laws’ beach house. We kick back and enjoy being able to go in and out of the ocean, eat fish caught from the end of the pier, see family and friends and, most important, watch the sun set. Perfect way to recharge!

Shirra (KnitForBrains on Ravelry) March 26, 2009 at 12:59 pm

I think my favorite weekend “getaway” is late spring/early summer ((before it’s too hot) weekend when I don’t go into work, hang out with my kids, ignore the laundry, order pizza delivery, and just enjoy all the space we have that we left NYC for.

writerbug March 26, 2009 at 1:38 pm

What a generous offer!

One of my favorite weekend getaways is going to Kripalu, a yoga center in Western Mass. My friend Kathy and I try to go every year, though this year we haven’t yet found a time that works well for both of us…I also love weekend “staycations”. I had one last weekend, where I canceled some plans I had on Saturday night and instead of going out spent the whole day, night, and all of Sunday doing whatever I wanted! This included painting my new writing studio, knitting, and reading.

bj March 26, 2009 at 1:40 pm

My favorite weekend was going to visit my sister in NH and going to Brown’s Lobster Pound at Hampton Beach…. it was great and Yummy too. Have been thinking alot about another weekend trek just for that.

The B&B looks awesome!

Logan March 26, 2009 at 2:22 pm

We live in Atlanta and my most favorite weekend getaway is definitely going to Charleston, SC. I went to college there so I love to go back to visit. With the beautiful historical downtown and the lovely nature beaches, it’s hard to beat! :)

Rebecca March 26, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Oh my oh my. Is it the B&B on Mull in Scotland? Long Beach Island in the off season? The friend’s farmhouse in Burgundy? My folks place in VT?

Actually, when I started to think, it seems the best break I’ve had in years wasn’t to some secluded country spot, (although typically that’s what I like most). It was three nights in NYC, without my (then) 18-month son. My husband and I just hung out like we did in our pre-kid days. Slept in. Ate bagels with the NY Times. Met friends. Heard some live music. Had a bit too much to drink. And got up and did it all again the next day. It was wonderful. As was coming home to my sweet boy.

suejm March 26, 2009 at 4:48 pm

My favorite weekend getaway is the Chickasaw Recreation Area in Sulphur, Oklahoma. It’s a beautiful, natural area of hills, hiking trails, spring fed streams, and old fashioned swimming holes. The spring water is cold and clear all year. One of the trails is like hiking through a giant green cathedral in the spring. Just writing about it, I can hardly wait to go again.

Jeanne March 26, 2009 at 4:54 pm

A weekend on Avila Beach on the California coast is a good as it gets. Sunny days, light breezes and the beautiful Pacific Ocean in the background. We set up our dye pots and dyed 10 skeins of sock yarn and then we amazed the other campers by spinning (literally) away the days. We had lots of observers and maybe a convert or two.

Cynthia March 26, 2009 at 4:57 pm

My favorite weekend getaway is a trip to Lutsen Resort on the north shore of Lake Superior. I have been going up to the north shore for 42 yrs., since before my husband and I got married. We always go in the fall and sometimes in the spring. My entire family, children, spouses and gandaughters, go in the fall. We hike, swim, and visit Grand Marais, a great little town north of Lutsen. We’ve also made solo tips up and some with just friends. It is just the best place. It also has a ski resort called Lutsen Mountains which we’ve also used. There is great crosscountry skiing up in that area as well. The BWCA is not far from there which brings a whole other weekend getaway to mind. Beautiful!!!!! You should try it. North shore of Lake Superior in Northern Minnesota.

Jenna Stewart March 26, 2009 at 5:56 pm

My favorite weekend getaway is any and every weekend I spend with my husband. I nearly lost him a few years ago to a brain hemorrhage and now we grab our time together with both hands and don’t let go.

Annie March 26, 2009 at 5:59 pm

My favorite weekend was my first with my then-boyfriend, now husband. We went to Big Sur, CA but the place isn’t really what I remember. It was the fun of exploring the world with him and discovering ourselves – as individuals and as a couple – in the process. I remember that weekend in my heart, not so much in my head.

Min March 26, 2009 at 6:06 pm

My favourite weekened getaway was my first Rhinebeck. I’d been knitting slightly less than a year (I hit my three year knitversary last fall), and I had coerced a non-knitting friend into going with me.

That weekend, I met Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, learned that I wanted to be a spinner, had taught my friend how to knit (she is well on her way now to becoming a Knitter), ate far more fried foods in one weekend than I thought possible, and met the animals that donated their fleece for the yarn I bought!

That weekend taught me so much about the community of knitters – how willing they are to teach, let one pet their clothes, and share their knitastrophe stories.

And since I live in Philadelphia, it was an awesome road trip adventure with the best weekend trip in the middle.

PS. Who ever thought I’d find better sushi a mile from our motel than in Philadelphia???

Virginia March 26, 2009 at 7:16 pm

One of my favorites would be heading up to Grand Marais, MN. It’s near the Canadian border, and it’s a fabulous little town. I would live there if I could afford it. Right on Lake Superior with hiking trails all around, and the BWCAW a hop, skip, and a jump away.

Elysa March 26, 2009 at 7:16 pm

my favorite weekend getaway is to play tourist right here at home (NYC). I start with a spa treatment or two and move on to the museums and theater. And sometimes I can find cheap deals on great hotels so its like I go away and can do things I normally do without having to deal with a ling drive or TSA

Catherine copeland March 26, 2009 at 7:20 pm

my favorite weekend getaway is ANY weekend when my grandkids are visiting. I living in the country and work in a small city. I left the big city behind years ago but I love CT very much

Crista March 26, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Actually, my favorite 3-day weekend getaway is to go back Chi-town and visit all the mothers of the friends my kids grew up with in Evanston, visit my favorite museum at the Art Institute, and in the summer have lunch at the outdoor cafe there, go to Hackney’s on Harms for an onion loaf and a burger and walk down to the lake and see the sailboats, and on and on…never get tired of it, or…New York City.

Becky March 26, 2009 at 8:16 pm

We love getting away to camp out on Giant Ledge up in the Catskills and then come down into Phoenicia and Woodstock the next day to wander and windowshop.

Donna S. March 26, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Weekend getaways at B&B’s with a few girls I have been friends with since grade school (& I’m 55!)

Susan March 26, 2009 at 8:39 pm

I adore Woodstock. I haven’t been up there yet this year but it is such a sweet town.

M J Moriarty March 26, 2009 at 8:49 pm

I haven’t had a weekend getaway for so long I can’t remember what they are like. But spending a whole weekend in my pottery studio is like an escape for me.

Trish March 26, 2009 at 9:17 pm

My favorite weekend getaway is going to the New York Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY. Autumn is a beautiful season there, and the combination of seeing old friends, spinning wool until all hours in the hotel lobby, and shopping at the wonderful vendors can’t be beat.
