Kool- Aid Dyeing Tutorial

by Susan on September 26, 2008

So I was all set to spend this rainy day in my kitchen making a tutorial on Kool-Aid dyeing for ya’ll. I even bought the Kool-Aid. And then I started poking around on the internet and found a really great tutorial on dyeing with Kool-Aid. Seriously, this tutorial kicks my prospective tutorials rear end. Especially since I could only find three flippin’ Kool-Aid flavors on the entire Island of Martha’s Vineyard.

So, rather than re-inventing the wheel here, I am going to take the lazy way out and post a link to the fantabulous Knitty tutorial.
I WILL be shooting photos for a tutorial at the yarn dyeing workshop on Sunday about dyeing with wash-fast acid dyes and posting it on Monday.
BTW- we are going ahead with the dyeing workshop this weekend because three of the people who signed up are still up for it but we will do it again the day after the shearing at the end of the month.
XO

I have used Kool Aid in mason jars (without the lids) in the microwave. It’s very easy and fun. I did it once with 6 pre-teen girls…they had a blast. Susan, let me know if you need Kool Aid….I can mail you some!

I’ve done it and it really does work. But be sure to use enough powder or the colors will be very light. The hardest thing is finding the right colors. If you mix colors be sure to record the amounts of each you used and keep a piece of the yarn as a sample to refer to in the future.

Not to belittle Kool-Aid, but the cheaper store brand works just as well if not better. This gives you more variety of colors, too.
